My daughter wanted to do a Pico Nano reef tank as her science fair project this year, she is 10, so we picked up this tank yesterday. She will post pictures and daily parametres while her tank cycles and with the addition of livestock. She fully understands how intensive this project will be due to its small size.

She has decided on argonite sand and is currently preparing it for the tank. She is then going to pick out a couple of pieces of live rock out of my tank for her project. She will post crom box to set up pictures as it comes along.

Any suggestions are encouraged and welcomed.

This is a great little tank!changed some things around though.
1.Got rid of the foam filter insert and filled the chamber with rock rubble and some ceramic bio media, and put filter floss on top.
2.plugged the little hole located 3/4 down to try and get a better overflow action happening but even that wasn't enough(surface film was still there) so I actually blocked off most of the overflow slots with a flat piece of plastic.
3.Added HOB airlift refugium(breeder actually)for cheato and for gas exchange.
4.I'm using the stock light for the refugium and hung an 18" t-5 dual for corals but that's just my preferance.
5.added an elite mini A-130 for more circulation.
Not to much in the livestock department yet just some loose zoas from my main tank and a Yasha Haze goby.

I love the look of that tank. Let me know how the shipping went from that seller, I've never used the bongo system.

It did not come with a heater but she borrowed a fluval heater from one of my Edge tanks. It has a slim design to keep with the slim profile of the tank.

Set up.

She chose two great pieces of coraline algae covered liverock from my tank. Fortunately/unfortunately, a maxi-mini had decided it wasn't coming off the one piece. As a result, she wasn't able to take any "out of the tank" pictures of the liverock as not to stress the maxi-mini. She also filled the tank immediately, as a result was unable to take empty tank shots with just the liverock and sand.

She also knows that she broke the cardinal rule of "no carpet anemones in a nano tank" but she will endeavor to encourage it off of the rock so it can be returned to my tank.

Maxi minis would be perfectly fine for nanos/picos given that the light and the water conditions are adequate :) The lights that comes on fluval spec 5 might not be enough for any coral; well maybe just good enough for mushrooms but that's it. Maybe start a DIY led for the setup :D She will learn a bit of engineering too :D

What kind of led lighting would you suggest? Shipping as I type and have never bought leds and we wanted to know what we should be looking for. TIA.

You could add a couple of these to the existing light that comes with it.

Would two of these be overkill?

I actually have two waterproof strips that I'm not using. I forget how many Kelvin units they are.

If you don't want to go DIY route, ecoxotic strips (panaroma, stunner, etc.) would be the best choice for you. Ebay waterproof lights strips would be useless.
