Hi Guys,

Filter socks have different "Microns". My question is, what do most of you guys use out there? Does one have an advantage or dis advantage over the other?

Thanks :)

I have both felt and mesh filter socks from BRS. The felt socks are much more effective at collecting than the mesh socks, I'm not sure what the microns are but I would suggest the felt for sure. I have to change mine every 3-4 days.

I use this 200 micron felt sock for my 135g. It is 7 inches diameter and 16 inches long. Lots of capacity and easily lasts 7 - 10 days before I change it.

Sas looking at trying a filter sock but did not want to "polish" the water with a fine micron size and have to change out every couple days or so, would 300 micron be a good compromise.

i put mine on a normal cycle in the washing machine with a 2nd rinse and a splash of bleach on the wash cycle. then i run it through a second with just water to make sure the bleach is gone. i can still smell bleach a bit after the first wash so i put them through a second time.

I don't like mesh as you will be changing them everyday, although they are easier to work with. I believe I have all 300 micron felt and they last me about a week before I change them.

Could there be a chance of phosphates getting into the fabric from residual soap?

Don't use any soap, just wash and rinse
Some people have a few socks and wash them all at the same time. More eco friendly and saves you money

Ha of course i wouldnt wash them with soap, but i mean when you do you use soap on laundry ect. but i guess if people are doing it with no problems then it should be safe

I use 200 micron I am collecting dirty socks in a 5 g bucket of RO water. I have 10 socks that I cycle. I have not done a load of socks yet, I guess the 1 wash with some bleach, double rinse, then one wash with just water and a double rinse should do it.

Im washing my filter socks in batches of four to six..I pour bleach in the normal wash cycle..after they are finished i place a capful of de-chlorinator in a pail to remove any bleach from the filter socks..(as per the wisdom of a certain reefer on this site) works great!
