The best way to get rid of surace film it to desolve it. Set you power head to blow up at the water surface for a few days and it will churn and disolve the protiens. Then your prism shoud be able to extract the properties of the film.

Remember to wash your hands before putting them in your tank. Thats usually where the film comes from.

A sump sure helped me because my overflow skims from the surface of the water and my skimmer does a better job inside my sump. Plus it gets all of that ugly grap off the side of my tank.

I have the prism skimmer, and I know the exact slime surface build up you mean. I bought the add on piece and as long as you us it correctly and don't mind the size, which is actually quite a bit larger than the origonal tube it works well. I do tend to aim one of my powerheads towards the surface anyway, cause as water evaporates it tends to decrease how well it works. Keep track of your water level and and you should be good.

I think the upgrade is about $50. It willl double or triple the diameter of the skimmer intake from your tank.
