Wow, I actually introduced myself. I figured I would be complaining about prices as well. Or at least lack of price tags.

Just wanted to introduce myself as the latest reefer in Cow-town. I have a 90 gallon RR Oceanic tank with the following

25 Gallon Sump
Aquamedics Turbofloater Skimmer
4 MaxiJet 1200
4" DSB
140# Live Rock
A few crabs and snails

If anyone has any advice for a beginner who is taking this hobby very seriously, please feel free to share.

Looks like my first post under fishoholic was Dec 30 2007 but that doesn't make sense cause if I signed up May 2007 there should of been posts from May/07 maybe I searched wrong for my 1st post :noidea: Denny if you can find it post it for me please.

I have a 15g long tank, $10 if you want it, however I'm in Edmonton and you would have to pick it up. Pm me if you're interested.

However I was posting under my ex's account for a long time before I started my own. I think (not 100% sure) this was my first ever post on canreef

I am a long time fresh water aquarist that is looking at setting up a salt water aquarium but have some questions.

-I have always been told to set up largest tank you could afford which has always stopped me cold from setting up a salt water but recently learned about nano aquariums And from reading various forums a lot of serious salt water aquarists dislike nano aquariums but I would rather take baby steps so what size of nano aquarium would you recommend 9, 10, 14 or 20 gallon?

-what kind of coral, rock, sand and bottom feeders/fish would you recommend for stabilizing tank and how many of each would you recommend?

-is darker setting better than having an aquarium in a bright area?

Thank you for any info you can provide

I still have much to learn

I started my first post with something like "Why acclimate fish!" :P

Hello everyone,

This is my first post over here and I guess I will have to start with a question that can either be stupid to some people or thoughtful to others :P

Anyway, so the basic procedure to introduce a fish a tank is through acclimating it first. As far as I have seen, the most common is to perform temperature acclimation and then slowing drip water into the water that the fish is in.

Now it is suppose to be done so that the fish adjusts to the water IN THE TANK.

Now my question is, when the water from the tank is dripping into the bag of the fish, the salinity is OBVIOUS to be changed unless the salinity of the bag and the water from the tank is same! Because mixing water of different salinity will increase the net salinity in the bag and will keep on changing too since in a small volume of water, new water is being poured and the concentration of salt will keep on increasing. And then when the fish is introduced to the tank, it again gets a whole new salinity to get adjusted to.

This thought actually made me confused a little bit. So what I have decided is, I am maintaining a 1.022 salinity in my tank since most of the stores (what I have heard) maintains that salinity and hence, I am expecting the salinity difference can be overlooked.

Anyway, I am new to saltwater world and is starting my first FOWLR tank. I would love to hear what other got to say on my thought.

Thanks

Apparently December 2, 2001 was it for me ..

There are about a half dozen people in Calgary who are active on the 'net, and a few more who lurk but never make their presense known.

I'm in Calgary and am always on the lookout for people to trade frags with. Drop me a line sometime.

Happy to see the numbers have grown somewhat!

Hello everybody.
We started our first saltwater tank on Jan. 1, 2012. A mixed reef 120 gallon with sump. First fish in March.
Going slowly and trying to figure things out.

Oct 24, 2009

Hi to all that take the time to read this. I am new to CanReef and to saltwater but have had fresh water tanks for ever.

I have a 65 gal hex community tank & a 65 gal aggressive tank both with Rena XP2 filter, SeaClone 100 protein skimmer, UV sterilizer & moderate lighting. Both have live sand and rock. Both tanks have been up for 6 months and doing well.

I have several corals in the community tank but would like to add some to the aggressive tank. Livestock in tank at this point is a loin fish, yellow tang, valintini puffer, fox face lo, snowflake eel & a green star sea serpent. I have a few small snail's and 3 large hermit crab's as well. Going to add a picasso trigger, scribbled rabbitfish, niger trigger & a fire clown in the next few week's.

Can someone advise me of what coral's, if any, that I can put in my aggressive tank.

Hey everyone,
Started up my first saltwater reef tank in late september, and I am just starting to get some frags in the tank. But lately after I put some more powerful power heads in I noticed that there is tons of little bubbles. Is this normal for a small tank or is it something I should be looking into more before I introduce anything. All of my snails, crabs and polyps seem to be doing fine and my levels are fine.

Thanks for any help!

That's my first post! It always seems to be problems that bring people to this forum!

n00b alert!.. 54G sump-less setup..
Hey everyone,
I have decided to take a plunge in the salty depths.

I have a 54G tank that I am using for my first SW setup. However due to space limitations & limited budget, I am going to try a sump-less setup. I am looking to keep some coral, LR, couple fish, nothing over the top (in terms of reef).. Kind of a Reef for Dumbies idea.. something to work with and learn from.

-Is a HOB filter (Whisper 60) adequately sized to handle a 54 SW? or should I invest in a Canister system?
-Is a skimmer required right from the beginning?
-What is the recommended light wattage for a tank of this size? (I have 2x39W T5HO @ 36")
-How much GPH should a 54G be running for proper flow?

Any other info you can help me with, and things I need to be aware of in a sumpless system would be great!

Cheers
Josh

Ah ha I found it May 2 2007

Clown fish usually will not get along with each other unless they are already a matched pair. A clown goby would be a good addition, because of their size clown fish leave them alone (you can only get one, two would fight).

My first post over 10 years ago was to Tony (Delphinus)

March 1, 2002

Hey Delphinus,

I'm new to this whole canreef thing. There is absolutely nobody in Edmonton that does reefkeeping (well I know a few) so that's why I'm in the Calgary discussion (my home-town is Calgary) I had a microbubble problem for quite some time....annoying isn't it? Do you run an inline pump or submersible one? I find that if it's an inline pump...silicone anywhere that draws water in...it might not leak, but it's sucking a tiny bit of air from somewhere. it worked for me, but took quite a while before I could silicone everything and finally overcome the problem.
