View Full Version : Newbies FTS thread!

Ok so I have been thinking about starting this thread for quite a long time now so thought its about time :D

Anyway so there's all sort of threads with experienced reefers showing their wonderful DTs and systems and us, newbies, are left with tanks, wondering when we will reach their awesomeness.

So, nothing is better than showing off new tanks to both new and experienced reefers/salties, get criticized or admired, share horror stories and such.

After all, we are the reefers/salties of next generation :)

Some rules that I thought of to keep this thread fun :)

1. Tank should be less than a year
2. This thread is for newbies FTS and ONLY for newbies FTS.
3. Experienced reefers are more than welcome to judge, criticize, flame, admire, post suggestions and so on. Alongside, they are also welcome to show off their DTs/systems to inspire or to explain stuffs :)
4. Please no personal insult :)

I hope this thread will be lively :)

Cheers

How do you define "newbie" ? :-)

How do you define "newbie" ? :-)

Haha. I knew you would ask something like that ;) I was thinking of putting something like "kien cannot show off his DT over here" ;) JK

Well newbie is just newbie; no definition required I guess. But for official purpose,

"Someone who has recently (within a year at max) been mesmerized by the wonderful world of marine lives and started the journey into saltwater hobby and looks around for inspiration like Kien's tank, hoping to end up with something awesome"

That should put up the image right?

I'd define "Newbie"as someone who has been in the hobby for less than a year because generally speaking after a yr you should sort of know what your doing

Its just that while in experienced reefers thread, we feel kinda embarrassed posting our DT so this one just relaxes that :D

One of the things I like about this forum is while there are some real elitist and people who are anti nano on the forums most here are helpful and not overly critical.

When I first started out I visited so many forums and post on some the general sentiment is Nano reefers are not welcome and noobs are definitely not welcome unless starting a full sized tank.

Made it real tough for guys like me first starting out then my friend who got me into SW told me about this site and one other(nano reef forums an American site) and I feel like I am accepted and am learning as I go along.

Nothing worse than posting a question/idea or picture and getting flamed for it.

Thank you for being there Canreef

There's an app to solve that problem.....

But yeah sometimes people get a little carried away with abbreviations, Canreef isn't bad for them there are others that you literally need a cheat sheet to read through the thread I've seen it so bad that you need to look at the context of the post to get the right meaning.

I started up the tank about a year ago this time, I had a little 40g tank for about 6 months prior to this one transferred everything over and started adding corals in January. Most if not all the coral was purchased as frags so the growths been decent I guess, I'm not to happy with the colors so I will be switching to mh/t5 in the next month to see if I like it better.

So I have been doing the SW thing for about 1.5 years I still consider myself a noob.

Cool! So tell us a little about your husbandry (dosing, additives, reactors, etc). Wait, do you have a build thread/journal?!

Ryan-b
11-17-2012, 12:56 AM
I do a 30g water change every 2-4 weeks.

Dose calcium(420)/alk(8)/mag(1350) via a marine magic doser, not sure quantities as I adjust the timer as my levels fall, i go through a gallon jug every 2-3 weeks.

I run carbon/gfo in a TLF reactor. Change out the carbon once every month or 2, and the gfo when ever my po4 gets above .03

I dont add any additives, or run anything like pellets, or zeo.

I only skim 12hours a day as I find the skimmer to noisy during the day, I tried skimming 24/7 for a couple weeks and had a cyano out break, not sure if this had anything to do with it.

Besides that I just let it run as I have a 2 year old and a 4 month old so I dont have a ton of time to play with it quite as much as I would like, but maybe thats a good thing.

I do have a Journal but I dont really update it I have a coupel pics on there.

Lol. No that's the corner they stay to for almost a year, there's always a frag of something getting moved around in my tank the zoas were placed there while I did a water change.
