Salinity levels.

Hi all,

Just woundering what everyone run's thier salinity levels at? I currently have mine at 1.023 using a Deep Six hydrometer to test it.

I run mine from 1.025-1.026..
Higher salinity = faster metabolism

Hi,

The range is between 1.020 to 1.024 for the majority of natural salt water bodies around the world (there are some exceptions). So, anywhere in between is fine (such as 1.023).

Many reefers like to keep it higher than 1.024 (like 1.025 to 1.026) because it helps kill bacteria, viruses and parasites that can thrive in normal saltity levels. This is a popular technique for those keeping SPS -- it helps ward off RTN.

Averages and extremes for coral reefs tested.. This is out of my Borneman book:

Reefs with lowest salinities:

min: 1.017 max: 1.030 average: 1.025

Reefs with highest salinities:

min: 1.023 max: 1.031 average: 1.026

So as you can see, you are perfectly safe running a higher salinity and I would highly recommend it!

1.025-1.026 on swing arm type hydrometer as well.

Hmm. That's kind of what I thought. I think I'll start to slowly raise my level to 1.025.
