Anyone know where I can get some seahorses? I'm open to different kinds. Trying to get a feel for what is out there. I am hoping to start up a seahorse tank very soon here. Thanks!

Very hard to get seahorses now-a-days in Canada. I think only or two breeders/importers are out there in the East. I think J&L might have some but you will have to ship it.

I looked into this a while ago and decided not to go the seahorse route. I was looking for captive bred ones to minimize disease and eating challenges, but I could not find any real good information on breeders in Canada. There are a few good ones in the US, but if I recall correctly, shipping across the border would be expensive (I might be wrong).

Alot of times the SH in the stores will claim CB, but they are really captive raised, meaning they've come out of the ocean and live in net pens. I had asked the local lfs where theirs came from, was just told they were captive bred and could not get more info. For these reasons I stayed away. If you can find someone in Canada that is breeding, that's where I go, you'll likely have more success keeping them alive long term.

Not telling you not to try, just saying they require some research before jumping in as they have specialized needs.

Good luck!!

Not completely true, I was in Big Al's in Edmonton & they had 2 tanks full of them atleast 30 or more in each tank. There is also a breeder in Edmonton that breeds for Blue World.

Yah they do appear sometimes in the tanks of LFS but they are rare (that's what an LFS told me) now-a-days and its not possible for them to bring it at every shipment. Not really sure about being "rare" though since I wassearching for ponnies like 8-10months ago.

There's one importer in Ontario who brings in different breeds from a very reputable sea horse breeder in USA.

Looks like I'll just check around at all the stores in town. In researching some people recommend setting up kelp environments. Does anywhere know an LF that stocks this?

I'd suggest joining and researching on seahorse.org before you make too many plans on a seahorse set up.

If you want H. erectus, There is an order coming in to SeaU Marine in Markham Ontario in the next few weeds. They are captive bred in Florida.
I believe Ken ships the seahorses but I don't know at what cost to get them out west.
Erectus are a much bigger bodied seahorse than the reidi, but not much taller.
