Maybe I should start this off with ...
Bah Humbug !!!!
Don't get me wrong ... I love Christmas as much as the next big kid
I'm tired of it starting off as soon as the retailers want it to
Nov 1st, or even earlier, and we are inundated with adds and such :twised:
I'm one of those that hates seeing and hearing adds for X-mas stuff until at least Dec 1st
I love Christmas as much as the next big kid, but come on, can't we do something about the mass media crap ????
Nov 1st and now we have X-mas stuff on the shelf :twised:
There needs to be a rule about holidays !!!!
OK, rant over

Boy I hate commercials on TV (http://barkingrabbits.blogspot.ca/2010/11/boy-i-hate-christmas-commercials-on.html)
50% of Americans fear they cannot afford X-mas presents (http://azpundit.com/obamanomics-50-of-americans-fear-they-cannot-afford-christmas-gifts/)

Christmas starts in September, geez if you are only seeing it in November, you are lucky!!
I think Christmas needs to stop being materialistic period and should be about time with family!! Never going to happen tho!

Irene & I decided several years ago to skip the commercial Christmas and mainly spend on presents for the children (ours as well as the nieces and nephews). We usually have a big houseful of kids at my mom's place for Christmas eve and then one of the brother-in-laws dresses up as Santa and passes out presents.
Personally, I hate fighting the crowds, finding parking, etc. All the "normal" stuff of Christmas shopping. Its not romantic but I give Irene a big gift card from Metrotown mall and then she can do all her Boxing Day shopping without spending a cent of her money. Added benefit is that she doesn't complain about my going Boxing Day shopping at J&L and the other LFS.
The plus side of the Christmas season starting earlier is that we can take the kids to Mandeville Garden Works (the local nursery) and they have a huge section with Christmas trees and other decorations all set up already.

My significant other and I stopped giving each other gifts a decade ago. Also, we have never given either of our children Christmas gifts :-) Both kids know what Christmas is, Santa Claus, gift giving, etc, but we have taught them that they do not need gifts once a year. If they want something they simply earn it any time of the year (by doing chores, behaving, etc). They have never asked for Christmas gifts because this is just normal to them. Even though they know their friends get Christmas gifts. We do decorate the tree, make snowmen, tobagan, eat candy canes and all that other great Christmas stuff though :-)
Also, I have not gone Christmas shopping for anyone since high school (when I used to buy gifts for some of my close friends). I guess I'm just lucky that I simply have no one around me that is into Christmas gifts.
