Grizz's 2012 Nano Contest Entry

Ok so here it is the start of my nano thread & one of the last to start there build.

I have not totally decided which way I am going to go with this tank yet. It will be one of 2 ways, 1st would be to go with a built in sump in the tank big enough to hold my tunze 9010 skimmer ( over kill yes but what the hell ) a bubble trap & a small return pump. 2nd would be to use an old HOB filter / skimmer thingy I got with my very first saltwater system I bought used.

After about an hr. I had this old tank all apart & some what cleaned up. Made a few cuts to get the pieces that I required for the size of the tank I was thinking of building & started to assemble.

Ended up with this so far:

Tomorrow I will finish up with the silicone and final clean up. I have not decided yet if I am going to build an LED light, use a Marine Land LED that I already have or purchase a SOL or Vaga.

I have a bunch of LR that is in my sump of my 165 with some decent shapes and sizes, going to use some black sand as well in my nano.

As for coral I am going to put some maxi mini's & zoas to start with. For fish I hope to find a few different types of clown goby's, a couple sexy shrimp and maybe a couple of the smaller blennies.

Well I got the tank all cleaned up and beaded the inside with silicone. Also decided I am going to run my Tunze skimmer just for kicks so I moved forward, cut a few more pieces of glass and put in a bubble trap.

Well Rick it's like this, all my tanks have sumps with big ares skimmers & several bubble traps to eliminate any micro bubble that might be caused by the skimmer. I don't think I can run a system with out some kind of sump compartment & skimmer as it helps to clean the water some what as well as add O2 to the water column. I think I might add a small reactor with some carbon as well.

oct15th /2012- empty tank shots:
by this date some pics of your dry empty tanks and what ever equipment you may have is to be provided.

So here is my 16 gal empty nano tank, with my Tunze 9010 skimmer in place. Also going to use a AC Jr. that I have just collecting dust to monitor temp & Ph.I will be putting my heater in the bubble trap on the skimmer side to let the water flow nicely past it. For my return pump I will be using a MarineLand MJ1200, that is if I can find where I put it.

What are you looking for for turnover? I have a nano pump that's rated at 300gph collecting dust if you want it. I think its a hydor. It's quite too and I'm passing through with the famjam this weekend. You could try it if you like, if not no biggie :P

Thanks Denny, I was surprised at how well it cleaned up. There are a couple rough cuts but I have a polishing kit on the way so I can hopefully clean them up. Deffinately NOT going to do a azzox tank, I don't have the time to dedicate to that style ATM. :biggrin:

The back wall started with the 3 baffles for the bubble trap, then a piece of glass that was 2" shorter them the depth of the tank. I then cut a piece of black acrylic, cut the OF teeth & drilled the hole for the return. Ran a little silicone on the edges of the back glass pane, set the acrylic in place & ran a bead of silicone around the edges.

I had this old portable dishwasher that my father in law used as a portable work bunch, took the top off & sanded it down.

Then I took the legs off a really old table that my wife had me move all over the house for the last decade until she finally said to get rid of it once & for all. Put them on the freshly sanded top to make a decent table for my tank to sit on.

Ok so after working in the snow all day in Edmonton ( not a good thing when you are a welder ) & freaking out because your wife txt you to tell you the power is out, I finally get home around 8 pm to find big tank is ok but a little cold. So I start on getting a few thing done on the nano.

First the light hanger for black SOL, I put the control on the arm for a lack of a better idea for now:

Then I washed some sand & through it in. Moved the tank back to the wall and refilled it. I hope to have time to set the rock in tonight also think the flow is a little low so I might pick up a bigger pump on the way home again from Edmonton.

Once everything is stable there are a few small pieces of rock that will be added with some Maxi Mini Anemones on them.

As for finned residence I am going with a host of nano fish, a few different colored clown gobies, a small Starry blenny, a Barnacle blenny and a few more that I have not totally decided on yet.

A little update, as I have been super crazy busy I havn't had a lot of time with the tanks.

Anyways, I knew things where going pretty well with my cycle cause the HA was growing like crazy. So I picked up 5 mexi turbos & 10 hermit crabs last week @ RC while I was in the area. They have done a great job so far with atleast 80% of it is now gone. I switch back to the Tunze 9010 skimmer from the little nano skimmer I bought ( regret that purchase decision ) as the collection cup was way to small.

Also picked up a Yellow Clown Goby, Green Clown Goby & Wheeler's Shrimp Goby to go in with my little clown.

Need to raise my light a little bit & set up an ATO system but all in all tank is going not to bad........so far.

All right then, on with the show..............

I have been completely consumed the last week with just being able to get out of bed from blinding migraine, shoulder pain, muscle tension & a twisted vertebrae that I just about forgot to update my thread so here it is.

Livestock thus far:
5 - mexi turbo snails, 10 - hermit crabs, a false Perc, Green Clown Goby, Yellow Clown Goby, Wheeler's Shrimp Goby & a cleaner shrimp ( just cause I couldn't put him in big tank yet )

Also tossed a few zoa frags, frogspawn, blastos & neon candy cane in from the big tank to see if that would help them grow better.

Need to get some peppermint shrimp in to see if they will deal with the apitasia. I also need to increase the flow a bit with a bigger return pump & going to switch out the ACjr controller with a full blown Apex.

how on earth are you running a 6025 in there without it ripping everything to shreds? I tried putting one in my 28g nanocube and I found the the flow was far too strong.

The 6025 is actually not running any more, I plugged it in for about 10 mins & pulled the plug. You are correct that it's way to much flow for the nano. I have a couple smaller pumps I am going to try out to see if I can get the flow rolling a little better.

All right lads & ladies here is my Jan 15 update a few days early as I have no idea when work might take me on the 15th. Sadly due to a major fluctuation in my Salinity while I was away working for 3 weeks I lost the 4 fish I had in the nano but that issue has now been addressed with a proper ATO system & salinity is has been holding steady @ 1.025 for over a month now.

I will be looking to add some peppermint shrimp ( if I can find any in Edmonton ) as well as a few fish. I think I will add a few fire fish, a red scooter blenny and whatever else I find that catches thy eye.

Yes i was a little POed when I got home to find my Salinity @ 1.035 cause the wife was topping up from the big tank display just cause it was easy for her. but now that the problem is solved I will add a few fish and shrimp this week.

Nothing in this tank came from my 165 gal. It was all bought from Marine Experience, Big Al's & Denny specifically for the nano. The fish I had came from Blue World before Xmas.

I have been thinking of maybe adding a few SPS frags to the nano but unsure. Need to build a little egg crate deck before my return pump to hold some filter floss & increase the flow.

Start with something easy and low maintenance, like birdsnests. I've found millipora (ime) is fairly forgiving to my poor husbandry as well. Acros IME have given me the most grief so far out of all ive tried. Your definitely skimming enough to keep sps with your tunze, but stable parameters will be your saving grace in that little tank.

All right so after 10 mins of taking photos and 3 hrs of uploading to photobucket here is my update.

Had to do a little rearranging to accommodate the newly acquired frags & have a jam packed nano. The dottyback is doing great, hasn't touched one of my 3 peppermint shrimp, which I was afraid of, scooter blenny is so fun to watch as he scoots around the tank, Bangii card was a great addition as well. I don't see the mandy that often as he has a few new pieces of rock to hunt through.

Are these your Rastas? Mine don't look anything like that :neutral: Not sure if its just my led lights (Eco pico) aren't the best (I know my zoas look very dull under these light compaired to Doug's radions) or if I got the wrong coral :sad: What do you think?

Yes those are my Rastas, Laurie. Mine are under a sol & pic was taken with an under water camera though as well but you can deffinately see the different color rings by eye on mine. Maybe your have to grow some more yet.

Showed the pics to Doug and he's pretty sure they aren't the same. This has happened to me before with Ken (sold/bagged the wrong ones) but he was good about exchanging them for the rights ones so hopefully he will again. I pm'd him.

Until about 3 weeks ago I was doing a 5% WC every 3 days but have been slacking due to work & just plain crappy things that keep happening that gets me side tracked. Amazingly my Tunze 9010 skimmer has been pulling a good amount of stuff out of the tank.

Battling a bit of hair algea and a bit of dino as well, so I have been dipping a few frags in revive every couple days & making sure I get my water changes done in a timly manner.

No Lawnmower just a scooter Blenny, lawnmowers get to big to fast for a nano. There is a Dottyback & a bangin cardinal in there but when I turn off the flow they tend to go hide behind the rocks for some reason. Also 3 peppermint shrimp in the rocks as well

It would probably be easier to move it all into the 60g and have one less tank to maintain.

When I started this contest I had wondered what I'd do with mine once it was over. When it had the maxi minis in it I felt kinda meh about it, but now that its a reef and has a cute Barney blenny in it I must say I really love how it turned out. It's become one of my favourite tanks out of all I have ever owned.

Just about done the TOTAL tear down / rebuild for the kitchen and need to get back onto the 300 to have it done for Nov 23.
