View Full Version : Need a new watch - reccomendations?
Well, I think I'm getting out of this hobby, and I'm going to need a new shiny something to cushion the blow of selling all of my gear.
My name is Murdoch, and I'm a watch-oholic! (yeah, that's right... watchohol.)
Anyways, I've been collecting for a while now, but they've all been relatively inexpensive (read: they don't last all that long). I'm looking to use a few of my tank sell off dollars and buy myself a big boy watch. I'm thinking somewhere in the realm of $500-$1000... MAYBE a little more than that for a spectacular watch. (definetly no more than $1500. No rolex, or brietling)
Anyways, I'd appreciate suggestions. I've been looking at Tissot... any opinions?
Thanks!

I've used the watchshop.com a bunch but sometimes you get better deals on ebay. Not sure what you're into or what you have but a Rotary watch can make a cool addition to a collection.
Thanks guys.
Style wise, I'm looking for something along these lines:
http://us.tissotshop.com/men/prs200-men-s-black-quartz-sport-watch.html
I'm more interested in suggestions for brand names though... quality is that main thing that I'm concerned with. I'm sick of my favorite watch becoming a dust collector in a drawer when it breaks. I started spending money on jeans because I'd go through $30-50 pairs at a rate of about 3-4 per year... I'm looking to do the same with my watches now. I've been mostly into Nixon, and Vestal but there have been a few others along the way.

I have a few Tissots, no issues with any of them. Last watch I bought was a Nite Chrono, it's selling feature for me is the tritium bottles instead of paint on the hands, face and bezel. So far it keeps time and takes abuse. I'd certainly buy another nite if I wasn't currently eyeballing a Victorinox Alpnach Chrono.
Online shops, I've had great luck with jomashop.com

Watches aren't needed as they used to be, unless you read pulses.

Needed? No. I have a cell phone to tell time if I 'need' to. Look good, yes. And there's no room in the closets for shoes on account of my wife... but that's about to change.
I love my Citizen Eco watch! Solar powered, never needs batteries, stylish and have never had any problems with it whatsoever! I have had it for over 6 years now. I still wear it to work every day. My wife bought me a Rolex for my birthday so I wear that one whenever I am not at work. I don't want to get harassed. LOL.

I like your style! How's the Nite for quailty? How long have you had it? They have some really nice stuff.
Anybody have opinions on a lower end (as in within my budget) Tag Heuer?

Had the Nite for about a year, it's the watch the sees the most use in that time period. The quality is on par with my Tissots and it takes abuse, I'm constantly bashing it (not intentionally but sometime I forget I'm wearing it) while wrenching etc. quality is better than my citizens and seikos which i also own, especially when it comes to an abusive owner.

Im a watchaholic as well! Right now I have 3 watches in Rotation.
The first on is a Tag Heuer aquaracer. I wanted a Tag for as long as I liked watches and my amazing wife bought me one for Christmas a couple years ago.
My everyday watch is a Nixon rotolog a great mid level watch that I get many compliments on
My third one is my geek/workout watch, and it's a motorola motoactv that I modified to run the android os honeycomb as well as the original motoactv software. Let's me play angry birds and log my workouts at the same time

Very nice, but a little above my price range. On top of that, I'm not sure how I feel about the orange face... I'm not sure if I could pull off orange.

DONE! With money left over. Maybe I'll just keep the tank! Wait, no... I don't want to move it... and everything keeps dying on me.

I would look at in a lower price catagory, Tissot, Hamilton, Movado, Rado
Then Omega or Tag
Costco has some great pricing on Tag, Omega and a few other models
I have a cheap Casio dive watch, that I wear on holidays (Scubadiving)
Personally I own 2 Vintage Omegas, 1 Vintage Tudor Oyster (Rolex)
1 Breitling
I just had my other Breitling stolen, I was looking at the new Breitlings, don't like the new ones, so I replaced it with a Rolex Daytona about 3 weeks ago.
Gemoro special ordered it in, since their display had a barely noticable scratch on the bracelet, plus the gave me a very small discount on the Rolex and through in an appraisal, I had a new appraisal done on my other Breiting, since the last ones were done a long time ago at Swedish Jewellers.

I've had a Tissot PRS 200 for 4 or 5 years now and it's been a rock solid watch. I think I'm on my 3rd or 4th battery, but I love the watch.

Wow! How did you pull that off? Just on sale or what?
Well, it's nice to see that I'm not the only one on here with a watch problem!! hahaha
Judging from what I've seen here, I might go for 2 or 3 in the $500 range, and call it a day. That Citizen is very nice, and I like the Tissot and the Nite.
We'll see though.
Thansk for all the inputs guys.

that was costco's regular price on it. they had that one for one year. when I looked it up on the internet the american MSRP was 450.00
like everything at costco, some stuff is a smokin deal, some is a ok deal, some isn't a deal.
this is my normal watch, I use a casio digital for work, and for other occasions I use my watch I got grom my great grampa, a 1957 bulova senator (well I think thats what it is.. everything looks right except the movment model) its a 1957 movment, just can't find the movment model listed for that watch.......

Pretty generic style you're looking at, to be honest the issue I have with watches like Tissot is they just seem like over priced fossils or something similar. While granted they are probably reliable and keep good time I hardly seem them as anything special and certainly not arm bling  Probably better off with the citizens as they are eco drive and offer many similar styles for the same or less money. I actually like the citizens better, much better styles like the one Steve posted is sweet.
Bulova have some pretty cool styles worth looking at, one I like is this one
http://www.classybrand.com/watch_photo/Bulova/98A108.jpg
You could also look at Emporio Armani which have similar styles to what you're looking at but offer ceramic cases and straps. They have silver ones to but I like the blacks and brown ones

I guess I just haven't had any luck with citizens products, IME they've never held up to even the slightest abuse...I bought the pictured Ti ecodrive 12 tears ago for about $950ish, within the first six months it stopped charging...back to the shop, another six months went by and it needed a seal on the bezel replaced...second time to the shop, the last time I had it into the shop was to replace the screws in the clasp after it fell off my wrist one day. I stopped wearing it at that time, this watch saw very little abuse. (worn for <18mo.)

On the other side of the coin, the below pictured Tissot Ti touch, has been abused extensively since I purchased it 6 years ago for the sum of about $1100. I bought it for a field watch (oilfield construction & drilling projects) and it has been ten times the watch of the citizen. This T was worn for >4 years and is still in great shape (mechanically speaking) today.

I had a Timex Expedition for 17 years, I only got rid of it because I used it as my work watch and the face became so scratched up that I couldn't read the time easily anymore. Even then it kept perfect time. Not a show piece but I don't know of too many cheap watches that last that long while taking lots of abuse.
I currently have a solar powered Casio Edifice that I really loved the look of but I've only had it for a little while now so I can't say how long it will last. It does keep perfect time however. My other watch is a Mickey Mouse watch that I just got at Disneyland. $17 when you bought over $35 of other stuff in the store. The watch for that price didn't have Mickey's hands telling the time but the lady at the counter let me pick out any Mickey watch I wanted for the same price, so I got the good old original!

I have a Wittnauer automatic that I inherited - it is an old mans watch. I got it from my grandfather 20 years ago. It just sits in a jewelry box, my wife gave me a decent seiko a couple of years ago but I have all way's wanted a Tag heuer.
