Hey everyone, its time to toss my money in the ring and get this game underway! If anyone was following my 13.3g build that i started last month then youll already have a good look at my general layout and be able to plan accordingly to beat me out of a few points, if not just follow along!

Before I jump into the build I want to show you what the tank looks like today as i had a bit of a problem durring the build that has set me back on both cash and time but ill take it more as a blessing in disguise

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2688.jpg

Yup thats right I had a bit of a blow out while i was working on my plumbing and long story short I have a three sided paperweight at the moment haha

Now its time for the world to see the master plan at work, here is my list of everything I want to do with this tank, my equipment and some pictures.

***DISCLOSURE*** I will be taking some of the pictures I used on my previous build thread to use in this contest BUT only until the tank is back to its previous condition due to the back glass blow out..Im doing this to keep everyone updated on the progress of the tank/stand that I cannot redo such as my work on the cabinet for the sump and the testing I did with the wave box.

Now without any further a-due, this is my new Mr. Aqua 13.3 gallon bowfront. She measures in at 23'1/2" long by 11'3/8" tall, by 9'1/2" at the outside edge and 11'1/2" at the middle of the bowfront

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2473.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2474.jpg

My plans for this tank are fairly extensive so ill break it all up like this.

The Display Tank
- Cut and drilled to accommodate an external overflow and single return
- Drilled for a second addition to the back wall of the tank that will house a tunze pump salvaged from a Tunze Nano Wavebox

The Sump
- 4 chambers, 1st will be the inflow and bubble trap to the filter sock, 2nd skimmer and reactor, 3rd Macro algea / live rock rubble, 4th return pump.
- Separate ATO box and pump

The Scape
- The scape will be dry rock and foam creating a bunch of negative space in the front of the tank, it won't cover the full back of the tank just create more space by using up the un-used debris catching areas thats usually don't get flow
- There is also a surprise waiting, if you watch the plumbing as it takes shape you might be able to tell what it is

The Equipment

Lights
-DT, Kessil A150w
-Sump, Panorama Strips

Pumps
-Return, Tunze Silence 1073.xxx
-Tunze 6202.200 Massacred Nano Wavebox
-DT, if needed EcoTech MP10

Skimmer
-SWC 120 or BubbleMagus NAC 3.5

Reactors
-BRS Deluxe Reactors (Maybe)

Controller
-Neptune Systems APEX
-PM2 Salinity Monitor/Control
-WEM Wireless Expansion Module (For EcoTech if needed)
-Breakout Box (DIY Breakout Box)

Auto Top Off
-DIY 2 Float Switches, and Pump to APEX Breakout Box

A totally techy nano after my own heart!

The "oops" with the back glass is rather unfortunate.

I agree but its probably for the best I would rather the glass crack cus im an idiot every now and then and be able to recover with something better then have it blow out 3 months from now and ruin everything haha

Alright everyone so since I dont have anything new to do with the tank at the moment i thought i would go ahead and start working on the filing cabinet turned sump stand here is the progress so far,

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2930.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2931.jpg

Then I took out all the hardware and the drawers
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2673.jpg

After gutting the cabinet i took all the fronts off the drawers and used them to make the door so that it still looked like the original cabinet
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2672.jpg

Then I added a magnet lock
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2674.jpg

Then I drilled 4 holes in the top of the stand for the overflow and return plumbing to go though
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2680.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2937.jpg

Then it was off to paint!
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2933.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2935.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2939.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2938.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF2936.jpg

The next thing for me to is wait until its all try then run a seam of caulking around the bottom edge to make it water tight and then most likely cut one or two more holes in the back to add computer fans for a little air movement and circulation.

Thanks guys! i just wish my check would come in so i can go get some glass for this tank!

The stand is all dry now and i think its time to introduce the tank behind the tank the reason why ill be able to keep the display tank so clean and unhindered with equipment and clutter...MY SUMP!!

its a standard 15g tank that when all is said and done will hold an aditional 7 gallons bringing my total to 20g

I picked up a whole bunch of stuff today, this should keep my attention for the next day or two as the tank transforms its self!!

Thanks Grizz, and yes i do have a bit of catch up to do but here is what ive got done so far

I got the glass for the overflow drilled and cleaned up

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3545.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3548.jpg

Then i got to putting the whole thing together and i was trying to match the seams to the tank, very minimalistic, and considering its not going to have much volume in the overflow i think ill do just fine

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3549.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3551.jpg

Now do you guys remember the fans and the heater vent that i had on the desk in the previous picture? well this is what I plan on doing with those. (A big thanks to Enigma for the idea on the heater vent!)

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3553.jpg

Then i wired them up rather crudely to a USB to make sure everything worked and was blowing the right way

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3552.jpg

Then i got them all secured and wire tucked away, now they are ready for the transplant into the sump cabinet

Today we tackle a few things, starting with the glass that needs to be drilled and cut for an overflow and wavebox, then the plumbing!

The hole for the wave box

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3562.jpg

Next is my return line

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3567.jpg

Then the overflow, untill i realized that i needed a new dremel bit to cut the glass

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3568.jpg

soooooo then i moved on to the plumbing!

Hey guys, heres an update on the tank! ITS ACTUALLY A TANK NOW!!!

i spend the last day cutting and setting and being stupidly anal about the silicone but its all done now! i just have to clean it up a bit and then its ready for the last stages of plumbing and then water!!

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3643.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3644.jpg

I also got my sump plumbed to the bottom of the desk, i used flex line to make sure that if anything shifted it would have the room to move and not break things and stress stuff. I also plan on putting in hard wood in the house in the next 4 months so im not sure if that will effect it in anyway but i thought i would be safe rather then sorry

Hey everyone! im getting to the lighting part of my build and im a little at a loss as to how I should light my refugium. I know i want to build it because i dont have much room in the cabinet for extras so its going to have to be compact. and i know i want LED's so what are your guys thoughts, is there something small and cheap that will do the job and do it well or is building something from a chip the best way or what do you guys think

Hey everyone so here is an update for you! I went and picked up some aluminum today to make a mount for all my controllers and switches, I modified the tracks that the original drawers for the filing cabinet were on to make a sliding pannel that will pull out of the cabinet to let me have access to everything on the panel, its not done yet. I still have to mout the last apex box and the netgear wnce2001 i just ordered to get it all online and then run all the wires and plug it all in but so far its looking good everything fits snug as a bug, and when its slid in i miss the return line by only a fraction of an inch haha weeeeoooo for measuring haha

If you grab one of the 0-10v cables from neptune you can run your tunze pumps off the controller. It gives you a lot more control than the standard tunze controller and its like $20. It will also give you a little more room in the cabinet. Looking good by the way.

I only have the one pump and thats the nano wave box, i didn't realise that you could do that, I have been searching for a while and haven't come up with much, ill have to look into it. Do you know if you can out the tunze ATO in the neptune as well?

11-23-2012, 08:10 PM
That is the most advanced controller you can buy. If you really wanted you could run your home alarm system off of it lol. You need to buy a break out box..they retail for about 35 bucks and it controls all sorts of relay switches. Basically anything that has an open or closed state. You could put a sensor on the cupboard door that sent you an email if anyone opened it. pm me your email and I will send you a user guide for it.

They are pretty amazing what you can do. Oh and yes it will run your ATO. Tunze's is a pretty solid one though.

They are for conduit, they have a rubber o-ring inside and they squeeze tight when you screw the cap down, I had to drill then out just a little to get them to fit the probe but i got them at lowes

1. Back right corner is the Tunze ATO

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3743.jpg

2. Right infront of the ATO chamber is the return pump, and to the right of the return and ATO is the fuge

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3745.jpg

3. Next came the skimmer

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3746.jpg

4. Then right at the front is the down pipes that feed the whole sump

5. the only thing left to do is to cut a piece of acrylic to sit just on the otherside of the tubes to hold my filter sock, then its water time!!

While i had the sump out i took the chance to wire in my GFCI plug and then cut up an extension cord to wire the whole box to one single plug that i can plug into an existing outlet under my desk

Way more effort in your nano then mine that's for sure. Nice job!!

As for the probes, get them back into a SW mix ASAP, once you have filled the tank do the calibration, if they calibrate ok your all good.

Now GET SOME DAMN SW IN IT!!

Agreed although fresh water works fine as well. It's just the pH and Redox that you have to worry about, temp will be fine.

the probes have what looks like a tube inside of them, with a few small air bubbles, so im assuming there is something liquid inside of them. They also have tags on them, the guy i bought the apex off of had them calibrated last month, they are also still currently in my plumbing with no water, but im going to charge that line with saltwater right now

The Grizz

You will still need to recalibrate once you get the system up & running just to make sure everything is correct.

Do i need the calibration fluid for that? cus i dont have any haha also i just looked, and i dont have any salt!! haha i sold the last of it with my old tank

do you think there would be any problem using table salt to mix up about 50ml of water to keep them wet, or is there any point is getting them wet again cus ill have to recalibrate them now anyways

Just throw some FW in the line for now & you could get calibration fluid from concepts when your ready. I just check a brand new ph probe I have & it's not SW in the cap.

pH probes are generally shipped with a neutral cal solution
Not sure about the redox ones

Nice work on the sump ... just one question
What are your plans for circulating the fuge water ? I only see a dam wall ...
Are you planning on a small pump to feed it ?

Perfect, i have freshwater running thought the tank right now, YES its finally full of water, just no salt :( sorry

The return pump is decided, the line that has the probes in it will feed the fuge, the rest of the water is sent up top where it is divided once more fora special surprise i have waiting for you guys when i do the rock work

Excellent, this is looking great

Now I have another question ...
Where is your sock going ? If I am seeing it right, you're planning on having it in the chamber after your drains. If this is correct, I see an issue
You want the water after the sock to go under the next wall ... otherwise it will just run past the sock

Am I missing something ?

And for cost savings, you could make the sock plate out of acrylic/plexi and cut the hole with a jigsaw, unless you're getting a smokin' deal on the glass
Let me know if you want more info about this

No Gregg you got it right, the sock is going to go inside the chamber after the pipes, it will look like this

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/13G%20Bowfront/DSCF3752copy.jpg

Then the water will flow down through the sock and fill that chamber then go over the last wall into the skimmer chamber

I had a thought while i was working on it, but im not to sure how it will work. Anyway's i want to try to replicate an island surround by a coral reef, i know that most islands are volcanic and that rock is dark if not black that fades to a lighter grey or brown as it approaches the water. How could i colour up the rock above the water to a darker colour almost black. Could i put the some food die in the epoxy when i brush it on?

Yes sir, its a 1 1/2" bulkhead (slip slip) that i cut down and put a pice of pvc into to make it fit nice and close to the impeller, the pump is then held to the glass with the tunze magnet it came with on the nano wavebox and then is attached to the pump

I was just out in the garage putting the last coat of epoxy on the rock wall it should be back in the tank by dinner tomorrow!!

Yeah for sure!, the box is 3 1/2" front to back, and the bulkhead is cut down at a bit of an angle, and when it is in the glass it looks like this (because the inside casing of the nano wavebox was kind of angled when i looked at it)

Yeah it is a lot wider then the nano wavebox, but i did it only to accommodate the bulkhead, just so long as you have more water volume then the original you'll be fine.

I made a video a while back explaining it all, here you go! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEwtFAjARbk)

Great thanks.

I'm guessing it's a little bit quieter than the standard box since you're not pumping from within a thin plastic cavity.

Do you think gluing the pvc sleeve to the front of the pump and slipping that into the bulkhead (no margnets) would work? Seems like that might be even more quiet?

EDIT: nevermind saw your watertest video and suddently remembered that this pump doesn't have a tube shaped shroud on it like the stream pumps. I even had a nano wavebox oops! You could take this one step further and use the rubber grommet mounts from the new nano streams to make it even more silent.

You get one hell of a wave in there btw!

I thought about that, but when you look at the magnetic holder it has rubber pads to stop the vibration from turning your whole tank into a tuning fork. I think if you were to make it all one solid piece as the pump turned on and off it would jump just a little as the all do but then because the bulkhead is directly on the glass with no rubber barrier 100% around it on all sides i think it would end up making a lot of noise and eventually hurt either the pump or the glass.

yellowworld
12-18-2012, 08:32 PM
you would also have to notch the pvc to allow water to flow past it, and that would then decrease the area you can glue, i think after time it would just shake itself loose, but its worth a try!! i just never did

So now that that project is knocked off the list I have a few things left to go before splash down can commence!!

I still have to build an acrylic shield that will house my 90 degree cords for everything to get plugged into, and will also fully encapsulate the rest of my electronics so they don't end up with water damage from being in the sump cabinet,

and then i need to pick up, a two little fishies phosban reactor to run GFO and carbon

and then i need to pick up a 150w heater

and last but certainly not least i need to pick up a tunze 1073.050 silence pump to feed the reactor, the return to the tank, the refugium and the water fall

Then i can start to cycle the tank as i build the LED's to light it all up!!

I KNOW I KNOW!!!! HAHAHA i wish i know this just a few months earlier haha but i think im going to go that rout too! Also the output on the front is 1.5-1.59" so it should fit perfectly into a 1 1/2" bulk head hahaha. My pump is starting to click and ive looked into why its doing that but so far every problem i have found out about on the RC forum hasnt been the issue with mine, so in the not to distant future i think im going to try out the 6055 to see what happens, PLUS is has the same type of connection that my current pump has so it should be just plug and play (Fingers crossed)

Alright so now that all the plumbing is 100% done ill give you guys a tour of the sump cus well there is a whole heck of a lot crammed into it haha

So this is the back of my sump, I have the fans out of the left side in the picture. on the left side you can see my feed lines from my tank to my sump running along the roof of the cabinet and to the front of the sump. My return line is the white flex pipe right by the float switch, it then gets T'd off twice inside the cabinet, first to run water past my probes that I have put inline which also feeds my refugium (the valve on the far right of the picture) , and second to feed my phosban 150 reactor (the valve on the far left of the picture) it is hanging below the supply lines for the sump

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/DSCF4227_zpsd8bf5d13.jpg

Here is a closer picture of the maze of plumbing

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/DSCF4228_zpsb3c6e4da.jpg

Then we have the heart of my system which will soon be getting a much needed upgrade to a Tunze Silence 1073.050 - its going to be a huge jump!! You can also see where my Tunze ATO floats and optical eye are placed in the tank

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/DSCF4230_zpsae771420.jpg

Then we have the skimmer/reactor chamber looking in from where the fans are on the side of the cabinet. There will be a heater sharing that space in the near future too

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/DSCF4232_zps03dd2789.jpg

and lastly the reactor is now in the sump and sitting nice and pretty, i will be going to get the extension kit that has two more elbows and the barbed fitting to keep the height of the outlet tube on the reactor as low profile as possible so i can get the skimmer cup out without and problems

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t211/Jkamie/DSCF4233_zps89e50315.jpg

and looking at the reactor from the fan opening with the front door to the cabinet closed - not a lot of spare room to be found haha

How will you take it out without unscrewing it from that coupler ?

Very good job of stuffing everything in there

haha no problems at all!! i knew the pump was temporary so i used a 1/2" slip fitting on the end of the flex pipe so it just slides on to the pump you just have to pull the pump off the flex line

Dude that sucks in a big way!!!!

Tell me about it, there i was just minding my business driving at a nice 60km/h down a back road near Balzac at 2:00am cus my buddy has a pregnant mayer and she was looking like she had just about enough of carrying that fat little guy around and them BAM!!!!

Bad ditch and post, what were they thinking! But seriously that sucks

I know right, someone should be out there watching what these posts and ditches are doing, they have been getting away with these shenanigans for far to long now

WHOA Jamie that is a bit of a distraction for sure, hope your ok bud.

Yeah im fine, the worst part is it happened slow enough that i said to myself "come on miss it, miss it!!" then i hear a pop and look over my shoulder to see my tinted window explode and light and snow come rushing in. Then i looked forward while still sliding into the ditch and i remember saying "well there goes my tank money"

damn that sucks dude, i for sure know this is the winner of the contest, all you need are live critters

haha thanks man, but i need lights to make them live unless i just toss a few things in there the last day and get a flash light haha

That sucks dude! Is the post ok? Poor guy was just hanging out doin' his job 'til you showed up . How's the body?

hahaha I didn't even feel the post it was just there one second and gone the next I turned it into 3 pieces the largest of which was the top with the speed sign on it haha

I mangled the pinch weld so i got a few days in the shop ahead of me, it shouldn't me to hard to pull out then weld a new lip in and do the body work, ill just tint my primer and let it go, i got some rush above the window im going to take care of as well as paint the whole truck this summer

Hey everyone, so im back! I did a pretty bad ass job on my window id say its strong enough to last through anything right now haha, i decided to put my truck aside untill the show melts and i dont have a 1931 ford model A in my garage that im currently restoring for a friend, then ill do all the body work and paint the truck and get a new window stuck in it.

in the mean time you all get a treat cus im back on track with my tank! haha i just got home from work and poured myself a nice jack and coke and now im pulling out my wallet to grab some goodies online. First stop..

JL Aquatics for a new return pump! I just ordered a Tunze 1073.0500!!! yeah thats the big one! and I need a heater so lets throw that in there too, a Jager 200W heater should do the trick, so these will give me a total of

243.40 with free shipping cus im really nice to them

Next were off to Bulk Reef Supply for a few things, first being a 5 Stage 75 GPD RO/DI unit and a float valve to keep it from flooding the house, next on the list is a 2 Part Dosing System for Calcium and Alk and then a single Dosing Pump for Magnesium and then some Magnesium to put into the dosing pump. The next time on my list is some GFO and Carbon to stuff on my reactor. Lastly I need to know what all my levels are at so lets toss in some Hanna Checkers too, like this one, this one, and this one! For a checkout total of

758.91 with free shipping

So far we are at: 1002.91$

Stay tuned guys cus after dinner and a few more JD and cokes....
