View Full Version : 150g drop down L reef tank

So a big move across Alberta, new house in a new town means.... You guessed it "New Tank!"

Not so fast- not so simple as a cube, bow front, rectangle or nano...

We decided to build an L shape tank for our newest tank. We seen a few L tanks in the past but decided to change that up to. Instead of on it's side we decided "let's drop it down!". One tank, two depths with out a wall to split em apart. "WoW," my wife loves the idea and lucky for me she is arms deep in it as well as me! Now we had to find a builder.... Lucky for me in Edmonton I find a pure glass artist, Neil (Glassdude). We passed some conversations, ideas, and BAM we decide to go all in at it.....
I'll post pics as we go further into this and what I chose to use for equipment along this build....

Puts the pressure on the tank builder to be 100% accurate having the stand built already!!

Now we wait on Neil to work his magic!
He called and said the tempering bust two sides so he was Cut'n new ones and getting them tempered ASAP!
(That guy goes all out for his customers, never lets you down and goes the extra mile!)
For now we work on the Sump room, under the stairs, small but way more space than under a the tank. 99789979

Two 150 phosban reactors, (carbon/phosphate media)
Vertex 250 in dump
Mag 24 return pump
2 x 4" filter socks
Refuge (still deciding on algae or rock chunks.... open to ideas)

Ha Ha Ha, it's 6" longer both sides to compensate and in case a hight difference the top is not in yet. I have all the faith in the world in Neil lol!

Thanx for the compliment, we are building it all ourselves 100% (outside the tank)

And let's be honest, who doesn't enjoy showing off their aquarium.

Main Beam Runs Under It....
That's another reason I picked the stairwell. It's an outside wall with a cross beam right along it!

Unlike that- we are building an "L"/ not a box with baffles and hiding it with the stand.....
Sorry but that's no drop down, that is a cop out. After the HARD WORK Neil has poured into this tank even I'm kinda drawn back by that "smoke and mirrors set-up"

It's nice, but it's just a box with a box inside....

I get you, I just overly want to stress in all this build that Neil has gone to lengths up and beyond. He has had 2 huge pieces get damaged by the temper furnace operators. Then all hours rushed back to cut the two 1/2 think "L's" to get us back on track.
I just want to give him that glory for his perfectionistic quality and pure attention to detail! Guy is an Artist!
(he said it will be ready for pick up on Monday.... Here's hoping no more hiccups!)

This is going to be an awesome build, can't wait to see it done.

PS - your house is identical to mine from the pics(even the view out the window is the same, lol) and I have a tank in the same spot but not as well thought out as yours. Knocking out that half wall would have been the way to go but I don't think my husband would have allowed it, lol.

Holy crap Mike! How did you get that all done so quick!? Didn't you just leave the Mac last week? Looks like it's going to be awesome! What are you planning for powerheads/wavemakers? Lights... did you decide to go with the sols?

I know how good Neil's prices are (and how good his work is), but this build has got to be PRICEY!!! Should be well worth it though.

Something to consider... in/outside of your refugium, build an Algae Turf Scrubber (ATS). I plan on it, but haven't had the time. Thery're supposed to work VERY well for nutrient reduction. Run a google search on DIY ATS.

Good luck man!

It cost much more than the last one, but Neil still is the best price and only one I'd trust to pull it together!

In the end- the difference is in my opinion like ATM's fake reef inserts in a reef tank I guess.

I'm really defending the pure hard work and craftsmanship Neil has to do to take on this build. An "L" is an "L" and a box in a box is just a box in a box I guess... Lol

Yet another pic of a box in a box...
Ha Ha Ha
I guess it's still far more original than a cube or the same old rectangle with a few minor tweaks... LoL

I had all of those, we just thought the True Drop L might add some challenge and visual interests... Deep end softies.. Shallow SPS...

But I mean not to knock those tanks at all, anyone in salt is Grade A to me!

I get what you're saying about trying to keep things a little more authentic but personally I don't see the point. If you build the stand properly there is no way you could tell the difference and you could seal that inner box to eliminate any dead water space. You're paying for the extra glass anyway and on top of that the extra time involved to build it. So for the extra money what exactly are you achieving? Well for one a stress point at the corner of the L which also happens to be the point where the highest bending stress occurs so really not a great combination. The other thing you've achieved is the task of making sure the stand step profile matches the tank perfectly, while perhaps not that difficult it's certainly no advantage. I think going box in box is better option all around, better structural integrity & cheaper.

Anyway love the build so far just didn't seem right IMO to call out other tanks as none drop offs.

MarkoD
09-12-2012, 04:40 PM
Are you putting styrofoam under the tank? What if the deep and shallow ends don't compress the styrofoam equally? Won't it crack at the inside corner?

Salt2Death
09-12-2012, 05:42 PM
We are going to match the stand 100% to the shape of the tank. Foam yes, even though on side is going to compress more- that's what the foam is there to do, even out the stress.

1" foam to redistribute the completion, let's inside sink deep than the other with out added stress!

(or so the math sez)

Fingers crossed!!!

I checked out some of these L tanks on RC, there's one a fellow by the name of Peter and Mr. Wilson did that is absolutely mind blowing. I think it was 1,350 gl dt, then all the support systems. Never in my life will I have or want a build like that, but that's the nice thing about this hobby, you can do what suits you, try something different and have something to enjoy "most" of the time for many years.

Sound will not be what you think, two socks and foam will be added. Just waiting on glass....

That's probably how I would do it. Have a more of a "traditional" reef set up on the shallow side with lots of open space for asthetics and then a sloping rock wall along the drop off to represent the edge of a natural reef dropping off into the open sea. Could maybe even have dimmer lighting over the deep end to enhance the effect even more.

Nice looking build! Looks like you rubbed a few people the wrong way making comments about "fake" drop offs. I think the box in a box is a much safer design, I'm not sure I would trust that stress point in my house! I will happily watch your thread though! Hehe. Your pipes are noisy because of your drain design. Dual drains for Herbie overflow would be dead silent. I have Herbies one 3 tanks now, won't do it any other way.

Hope to fix the little plumbing leaks without tearing pipes apart today.
ATO needs to get installed today too.
Probably rearrange the returns as well. 4 are over kill, cap 2 stay 2 returns.http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/28/ysysy2un.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/28/abedeha3.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/28/4uje7uje.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/28/6yvu8ude.jpg

My only thing is that I would look at it and miss the extra volume lost with this drop down concept. The aquascaping is first rate btw.

As for the lost water volume- I added a second tank to the sump to load with LR and add extra water volume. (hoping the helps with stability and the lesser amount of LR in the tank

First off WOW that you noticed that way off in the corner!

Tiny back pressure quiets the sloshing plumbing. Didn't slow the main pump
Down just the big splashing sounds in the plumbing......

I noticed it because I've seen people do it so many times and have it end in disaster. A crab or something makes its way down the overflow and gets stuck on the partially closed valves, backs up the flow and the tank overflows. It looks like the last chamber in your sump is probably small enough that your pump will run dry prior to a tank overflow but this can be bad too if the pump dies as result when you're not around or if your ATO is capable of pushing things over the edge.

Something to consider I guess. You have two drains in the overflow box, you could run two lines to the sump and setup a herbie style overflow. 100% quiet and much more reliable.

+1 for Herbie, mine is super quiet... Just make sure you do it right the first time, not like how I did mine originally.

cale262
10-02-2012, 11:07 PM
+2 for Herbie, I have a hybrid herbie going to my basement sump with a third emergency overflow in the DT...not only is the Herbie dead silent but it's pretty safe.

I also just replaced all the flooring on the main floor of my house this spring/summer...if you guessed "tank related flood" you'd be right, after that expense and hassle of shutting down and moving 500gal of tanks you'd understand there is no such thing as too safe.

As to all the advice up above, Big Thank You!

1. I have my over flow pipes set up as a Durso stand pipe.... (also have setup ahead of time a no way no chance a snail or grab can get into it all)
2. The noise I'd not at the display it's in the plumbing as is hits a section of 90's because of the restriction on how the plumbing was able to run.
(it sounds like a constraint flushing toilet in the basement family room)
3. ATO is monitored, more than 30 seconds it's shut of for 60 mins on top of flood sensors to shut it and the return pump down!

Thanx Guys!

That flushing toilet is the noise I warned you about previously when you use a single drain on that large of a drop.
Two drains, one back up and one with a gate valve, zero noise, zero air, everywhere (upstairs and down).
Crabs, snails and fish will find ways through your plumbing, unless you have strainers in your dursos that require constant cleaning you're vulnerable. Even a clump of algae can clog a valve.

Oh Yes You Sure Did!
(warning was given)

Big Thanx, Huge Thanx On Allll The Advice As To How To Fix It-

** Exterior overflow consists of main strainer separation from the tank, second one to catch the critters and 3rd a foam block that I clean every other day, and last the Durso strainers that I have yet in Many years had the strenuously clean, outside the normal cleaning routine I have. (I actually keep all my equipment maintained and do monthly cleans of 90% of it) OCD at its finest! **

But all your warnings are taken as very helpful and I promise if in anyway any of my redundancies are compromised I'll let you all know so you can give me a huge round of "I Told U Soo's" lol

:) thanx guys

If I'm seeing what I think I see, it looks like you have your sump bulkheads backwards
The rubber seals should be in the water and the nuts on the outside

At the risk of pointing out another problem, you can install bulkheads either way but the gasket should always go on the flanged side and not the nut side. So with your orientation the gasket should be on the outside, otherwise water can leak out through the threads.

PS, I just want to help to prevent problems, not state things now just to through it in your face later.

No worry! But definitely thank you as its not my first rodeo (or sump), there are many ways to do stuff and not all of them the same. It's why these sites exist, show other ways and ideas and grab suggestions.....

Can't leak through the treads if there is silicone*

I don't get it? I mean sure many ways to do things and I like learning new methods but why would you opt for realying on siliconing treads instead of installing the bulkhead properly with gasket on flange side? Seems strange but to each there own I guess... Just don't think I'd go recommending that approach to others.

OMG, don't tell me you are going to rely on silicone to seal your fittings ??? !!!

StirCrazy

listen to them, install the bulkheads the proper way. silicone will not seal very good in a bulkhead, I add a think layer of silicone to all parts but I install the gasket the proper way also.

and yes there usaly are two ways to do something the proper way and the wrong way. don't set yourself up for problems using the wrong way. I did this myself, which is why I know. I had one with the gasket on the wrong side and one proper (was 1/2 asleep when I put my plumbing togeather) anyways both were siliconed also and 2 years later the one started to leak and it was the one with the gasket on the wrong side.

no big deal, next time you do a water change it is easy to fix.
