Anyone have any experience with 316 stainless and saltwater? I was thinking of making my daughters new cabinet out of it...

Thanks,

Beth

316 ss is the worst stainless to use in salt water, which is to bad as it is the most commen.. if you can find it 317 is what you want to use.

Austenitic stainless steels (304 and 316) are corroded by chloride ions. Prolonged exposure while under stress will cause cracking. Heat makes it worse.

I would avoid it for a stand.

316 is what we use for our check valves - very hardy, maybe just not in salt water :P

I can get 317, i will talk to the metal dood today and see what he says, although he also told me 316 would work fine o_O.

Can you think of any other draw backs to using metal?

stray current can be fun when leaning on a metal stand
