I was hoping to grow it a little just for looks, then eventually keep it trimmed
does it matter where I cut it?
should I cut the oldest area's and leave the new growth?
does any of it natural die of old age?

This algae grows fast and pulls lots of calcium of your water. I try to get as much as possible when I pull it out.

You can cut or tear from any part of the plant without harming it. Any area that touches a hard surface can attach itself. Its very easy to grow and can become a problem in some tanks if its not kept in check. I've never seen any of my own die and its existed in my tank for several years so I don't think you need to worry about it dying of old age.
You can find your own quotes in this article.

thanks for the link.
I'm going to keep it trimmed, using it mainly for looks and to fill an small partitioned area in the fuge that has rock rubble.
