I am setting up a bigger tank (110gal) and I don't want to shell out the money for live rock and I don't want any bad hitchhikers either. What "dry" rock or other alternatives can people suggest?

Thanks,

Mike

there is dry marco rock.
but it isn't live and there for has no beneficial bacteria in it, and could take months or years before it is live. If you go with dry rock, do like 50% dry 50% live, and just cure the rock before hand for a while to watch for pests and cook out any of the crap that is in the LR. (not literally cook, but cure)
there are a few guides on curing live rock on here, that may be of some use to you. you need a lot of the hitchhikers on live rock as they are beneficial, yes there are bad ones, but its just part of the game. curing allows you the time to watch for these bad critters and take care of them ahead of time there for reducing the risk of introducing them into your tank

Those top two are for 40 and 50 lb boxes, not per pound. :) I used 35% Marco Rock and 65% Live Marco Rock from a fellow reefer's tank. The only bad hitchhiker I have is a small crab that I occasionally see at night. But I also got small starfish, snails, pods, etc that were all good.
