ugghh, the mysteries of plumbing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/mariesnell/P5200088.jpg

I have set up the plumbing in the overflow the way it was set up before.......could someone please explain to me the concept? I get the returns and the main overflow to the sump with a ball valve attached but why 2 emergency overflow pipes, both the same height.
There are 5 holes drilled into the overflow 2 smaller and 3 large is there a better way to do this? anybody want to come over and do it for me

I think you have 2 emergency overflows pipes in case something blocks your regular down pipe, they wanted to make sure there was lots of backup so water doesn't overflow your display. Usually its one-to-one, but added redundancy?

Wouldn't it be better if the emergency pipes were different heights though? The final pipe being kind of a last ditch effort to save the floor?

lockrookie
05-20-2012, 06:30 PM
if you want you can do that with a final please dont flood my house hieght it may be a good idea in my opinion as long as your comfortable with this

SeaHorse_Fanatic
05-20-2012, 11:40 PM
Yes, you can cut one of them a bit shorter if you wanted to. However, the height difference between the reg. & emergency standpipes isn't that much so I would personally leave it. Should work fine with no mod.

The tank is 8' by 24" by 30" tall and the eurobracing makes it very hard to work on
For lighting I'm still using my metal halides. There is one pendent waiting at the bus depot for me, another is still on the old display for the fish and there are 2 lighting the new tank in the pictures

Fish have made it to the display tank.
Survivers of the quarantine process, copperband butterfly, female mandarin, solar wrasse.
Lost, achilles tang (I think the stress of being in a small tank finally got to him) male mandarin (starved to death) 2 other fairy wrasses and 3 flasher wrasses
I went with hyposalinity to treat ich.....In hindsight I should of just gone with copper and got it over with quickly

As you might notice from the following fish list I'm keeping most of the fish on the small size. I want to mimic a real reef with numerous small fish, all looking very busy

Fish list so far
blonde naso tang
copperband butterfly
12 green chromis
3 helfrichi firefish
solar fairy wrasse
flasher wrasse
female mandarin
6 orchid dottybacks
clown fish
Just added a lubbocks fairy wrasse tonight......I love that all the fish are peaceful enough, they never paid any attention to the newcomer at all and within minutes he was swimming with the rest like he had been there for months

I hear you Marie. I haven't added a new fish for ages because I know what the big bullies in the tank will do. They ripped up my 5" Chocolate Tang pretty bad in a matter of minutes. I got him out before they killed it but it was not at all pleasant. Big, mature fish may look nice but they sure are nasty!

That's what I've been going with but it looks more like a Cirrhilabrus luteovittatus without the gold bar on the side......

Beautiful!! Can't wait to see it fill in. I love your idea of smaller fish. I tried it.. and then caved.

My original plan was all small fish except the copperband but when the brown wafer algae started growing I decided 1 naso tang would be alright. Then I took down my 120g so now I have 3 tangs in there and I am apparently in the process of caving myself

...... so different from your last tank :) .....

After catering to an sps tank, fretting over majanos and algae in a zoa tank and attempting to make money by propagating rics, I wanted a tank that I enjoyed no matter what route it took. A complete reef, with algae, crabs shrimp, lots of fish and the corals playing a background roll. So far I'm enjoying it all.....although the cyano could leave anytime now

Everything looks so vibrant, colourful & healthy Marie. But of course, what else would we expect from you:biggrin:

See you in a couple of weeks. Felicia and I can't wait to check out your tank(s) in person.

That is one awesome tank! I wish I can have a big tank like yours. How many chromis do you have and how long have you had them? I use to have 7 in mine but now down to 2 as they seemed to have killed each other off over time.

Thats some serious progress for a tank only 1yr old! Love the big tangs and wrasses.
