View Full Version : Performance tires

Can anyone recommend a good performance tire? Old tires are goodyears, only lasted 30,000+/- kms and my boyfriend won't put them back on my car this year, slicks is an understatement....lol. I've got a quote for coopers, these are an all season which would help extend the life of my snow tires, stay on longer in the fall, back on earlier in the spring. I don't have much of a choice regarding tires because of my rim size.

Thanks

+1 30000km is nothing :)
I have Wranglers with 75000k on them, and the guys at the shop still pass them as "great". lots of tread still

You guys are lucky, I only get about 8-10k, off my summer tires, so 1 or 2 summers if I'm lucky

225/40/18 front
285/30/18 rear

I think with tires (like anything) you get what you pay for. buy the cheap ones and you will replace often, spend the xtra $ and you should get more. if you have a good alignment in you wheels and dont drive like a 16 year old boy picking up chicks, you should be able to get 50,000k easy imo

I'm trying to find pricing on the ones I have and it looks like these tires are $494 a piece. The dealer and tire shop told me they were a good tire but that's all I would get out them. I'm not looking to cheap out but I don't want to spend $2000 on tires that will last 3 years max. It's not a high end sport car but I'd still like some performance. Hankook and continentals were also recommended.

hankook makes one of the best tires these days

Ok ignore my last post, my current tires are only $106 each, cheap. So will invest in something better. But was told they were good.....meh.. Will look into the hankooks.

Why don't you check out Tire Rack (http://www.tirerack.com/)
You can get a pretty good idea of what life you can expect from specific tires, reviews, rough prices, even enter your car and see what they recommend.

Was on there. Good site but they don't give prices. I'm looking at good solid brands, then pricing. Will go back to it and read up some more. I spent $1000 on my winter tires and they are awesome. This will sound lame, but I've never bought tires before other than the snow tires. Ex worked at a dealership and would get the factory ones new owners didn't want for free, so never paid attention to when they needed changing, he just did it.

Look at 1010tires. I purchase all my tires online and they are substantially cheaper especially when you get a sale online. I currently have high performance hankook for the summer. They are supposed to last longer then the average high performance tire.

So someone asked what you are putting the tires on. That can make a difference as to what to suggest.
Plus, you are looking for a performance tire, so don't expect much lifespan. 30K is a little low, but is expected with better tires as they are sticky and wear out faster.
If you want longevity, you're going to sacifice ride quality, performance and possibly even wet weather handling.

To be honest, best place to buy tires is Costco.

1010tires.com is the Canadian version of Tire Rack. They also have a good amount of reviews and selection. All prices are in CDN as they are in Vancouver. I saved almost $200 on a set of Blizzaks last fall and I will use them again. I like buying local but not at a huge premium.

If you're going to buy from 1010, have someone you trust do the mounting etc as we read nothing but nightmare reviews on them last winter while searching for new Camaro snows. Damage to cars and rims, blaming the customer, ack

Sorry, I started a reply and then switched pages. I've got, um...a Mazda 3 gt. it's by no means a sport car by definition, I'm just trying to replace what I've got. 17 in rims. I use my car for work so need something that can deal with the rain. I will go back to tire rack and get more info. Ride quality, ya, I already know the difference there.

I really like Bridgestone Potenza's. Sure they're not cheap but they stick to the road like crazy and have great warranty. Don't forget to rotate them every other oil change.

if you are observing uneven wear you need an alignment to address the source of the problem, then then treat the symptoms with a tire rotation...

Kuhmo, hankooks, continental, bridgestone are options. Some of the other ones don't come in the tire size I need. Pirelli's are nice, but would like something a little longer lasting.

I will either buy from the dealership or one of my tenants. Coopers are out....

Have to decide soon and book in....gonna get warm this weekend!!

the treadwear rating is marked on the side of every tire out there the higher the treadwear rating the longer it should last. most 100km rated tires are around 440 bridgestone rates theres low so there 100km tire would be probably around a 320. look on the sidewall of the tires for it

If you want performance get some Potenza RE01Rs! AMAZING tires but expensive LOL
As for all the rest of you I got 126,540km on my set of tires and still have 3/8" of tread left... Anyone top that?

It seems the main concern is tread wear so you don't really want performance tires as higher performance typically means less life. Stick with typical all season tires and you'll get the best bang for the buck in terms of tread life.

+1 you should get all seasons. It seems like youre looking to get the best bang for your buck.

Theres no need for performance tires for a mazda 3. Find the quietest one with good wet/dry traction. I would recommend Kumho Ecstas or Michelin Pilot Sports.

I second run flats are garbage! Crappy ride, ****ty life, horrible traction, and if you get a flat you can only drive for 50km and your tire is then shot. Might as well carry around the green goo! I always laugh every time I'm at the dealer and some poor sape is at the counter thinking he was just getting a tire repaired but rather has to buy at least two near tires at $350 each  I've never use run flats again.

I run Toyo Tires on my car and will be putting them on my truck this summer. I put the tires on in 2002 after the factory tires wore out but I also put winter tires on every year. I won't buy anything else and I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for.

I gotta put my $0.02 in here
We have all-season and winter tires for our '10 Camaro and '78 Chev P/U.
I'll be the first one to tell you about summer and winter tires over all-seasons, but ....

We have Michelin Harmony tires on our '90 Olds front wheel drive and it goes through snow/rain/dry weather without a hitch. Now mind you, we only ever put it through no more than 6-8" of snow, but they are great/inexpensive tires for an all-season that we leave on all year and the wife ran that car for 20 years without snows. Even when we had over 2' of snow.

My vote goes to Michelin Harmony tires. Inexpensive, quiet, loooooong tread wear and enough performance for any low HP vehicle.

first of allmost goodyears have a tread life guarentee, and seeing as your driving a small car (which should not chew through tires) I am surprised you are only getting 30,000 km out of a set of tires.

Second, a masda 3 is not a preformance/sports car so why do you want to waist money on preformance tires which are softer compound and have shorter tread life. even if it was a sports car, it sounds like you want more tread life. look for a good quality tire with a large tread life guarentee.

I ran Toyo's on my 18's back when I had them on the truck. Ran them for three summers and still plenty of tread left, and that's with adjustable suspension which can tear tires up.

I recently went with the the all season Kuhmo Ecowing tires on my Subaru. These are the new Lower Rolling Resistance tires, which give better mileage. I like them so far,.... quiet and soft ride. And OK Tire gave me a great deal...

My previous tires were Kuhmo, and were a lot better than my original stock Bridgestone Potenzas, which are way over priced and over rated, IMO.

I'm not sure why, but it seems the size tire I need is not common??!! When I put in the tire size as it won't pull the correct size by car model, I get 8 options for tires. When I bought the car, I was told I had performance low profile tires, they would give no traction what so ever on snow/ice and were pricey. In looking for replacement tires, I've found the tires are cheap which is likely why I only got the milage out of them I did.

The dealer (not the same one I bought the car from) gave me 5 options Falken Ziex, Yokohoma Avid Vigors, Michelan Pilot MxM4, Hankooks Ventus V4, and Continental DWS, price ranging from $135 (Falken) - $228 (Michelan)/tire.

The car is not a performance car and as much as I love it, zoom zoom is an oversell...lol. It is a fun car to drive, but I can say as far as tire comfort, the summer ones I have had are hard and do not offer a smooth ride, noticably different on the snow tires. I get that's part of having "performance" tires. I will spend the money on the tires to get something that will last longer than 2-3 summers, still look "sexy" and be fun to book around in, I want quality for sure.

I love my snow tires and don't think I'll ever go without again because they do make a huge difference, but I guess that depends on the vehicle too. We've been talking about a camero...just for fun, but also talking about a SUV so we can get a boat...neither is pratical, but you only live once, may as well have some fun!

Summer tire compounds are a lot harder that the winter tire so that they can handle the heat of the road in the summer. That is why winter tires burn off faster in the summer they are a soft tire for winter traction. All season tires are also a softer compound hence the shorter life span. They need to be a little softer to have some traction in the colder winter months.

205-55-17 is not overly common but you could always use a 215-55-17 as well which is more available, you can check out tire trends for most of your options. http://www.tiretrends.com/catalog2.php3

I wouldn't buy tires from a dealer. A 55 series tire is not low profile and you're certainly not limited to performance tires.

Honestly I'd order a set from Tire Trends, the shipping is surprisingly cheap and they'll show up at your door within a couple days. Then take them in to a tire place and get them mounted.
