im completely new to this hobby, and am looking to purchase 2 ai sol LED modules for my 70 gallon 36"Lx24"Hx18"D tank.

what im wondering is, should i be getting a 36"L light rack with the hanging kit, or 24"? theoretically, the 36 inch rack would be a waste, since i wouldnt be putting the lights at the extreme ends of them, otherwise light would be wasted in that it wouldnt even be going into the tank. therefore i should only need a 24" rack, centered, above the tank, right?

am i wrong in this way of thinking?

I don't know but to give you another option check out modular led they have a custom hanger.

Everyone needs to decide for themselves based on what they want to stock their tank with and where they want to put it. If it is any help at all I have AI Sol's and we built a 5 foot rack for a 6 foot tank. Is working great for us.

If you are hanging the rails you only need the 24 inch rails that will give you enough to mount both sols in the centers of each half of the tank. If you are going to use the legs with the rails to sit on top of the tank then you would need the 36 inch rails to go all the way to the edge.

You can of course also hang the 36 inch rails you just get a little extra.
