I'm in the process of building a new tank, a custom 125 gallon tank that I'm building in to my basement. I have decided I want it to be a FOWLR system. I may eventually graduate it up to a full reef tank someday, but for now I don't have the experience or the time to dedicate to that.

I have been looking around for sources of live rock locally, but for the 100 -150 lbs I"d like to get the prices are steep. Is there a good source for this amount of rock locally, or possibly an online source. I'd like to get some larger pieces for the base too and most of what I have seen seems small.

Hey, welcome to the bored!

Have you seen these:

Some good stuff to be had. You can also pick up the odd nice piece (so I'm told) at Gold Aquariums in the SE, for a decent price as well.

As for base rock, the larger pieces available are not quite old reef chunks (tufa, lava rock, etc...) like the reef rock is. May as well get the real thing, or close to it. Fake rock of different compositions can provide you with challenging problems down the road. OTOH, some have really good success with their own concoctions.

I'll probably have lots more to ask here as work on this system progresses. I was glad to find this local forum.

Those prices are much better than what I have seen locally, and the shipping cost is cheaper than US sources. I just got the tank home today, so it will still be a few weeks before it is ready for the rock. I was given and old sump also, but I have to take it apart and cut it down 6" to fit better. Oh well beggers can't be choosers.
