So after 4 years of enjoying my 90g I am taking the leap into the BIG tank club. I purchased a 225g from Chris (lapdog2020) It was un-built and I was able to set it up as I wanted. Its dimensions are 72x30x24 with a 48" sump (can't remember the exact dimensions) I wanted a 4' sump so I could build a waterproof enclosure for electronics in the stand under the tank. Here are some pics of the tank build Chris was nice enough to take and send to me.

nice work!!

Thanks I'm pretty stoked to see it coming along so nicely.

One of the plans I have for it is to finally have a dedicated area in my sump for frags. I actually came from reading your tank journal Cuz. I am going to use tiles like this..
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b87/subman001/tank%20journal/IMAG1218.jpg
(from a thread on RC)
I bought a AI sol from a canreef member and plan to use it for lighting the frag area. Mostly going to grow zoa's in there for now just because I love them lol
hopefully get some of the rarer ones and get a nice colony before putting it in the DT. (sound like a plan, hopefully it works out like I planned )

I should also mention it will be sitting on a stand made by grizz. I'm going to use mdf and magnets to make a removable wood fascia. Including a hole and a box mounted to the end with my profilux face pointing out.

A single drain over flow will also run quiet if it's set up properly. Mine is virtually silent.

I thought herbie was more based on dual drain safety.

Nice set up Subman. Looking forward to seeing more.

Here is some details on the tank it's extra beefy and heavy!!! (looking for strong volunteers!!)

The tank is 5/8" glass for the sides and 3/4" bottom, eurobraced and black silicone all around. The returns are. two 3/4" and the two drains are 1 1/2".

Whats everyone's opinion on some of my equipment?

Is my bk mini 180 enough skimmer?

3 mp10's?

what return pump?

NorthernCoral

Not that I have had a tank of that size, but I cant see the mp10's doing much especially with the length of your tank. If your gunna do vortechs I would say mp40 atleast if not mp60.

Not seeing any replies on this, I thought I'd chime in.
I don't have a recommendation for you, but your's is only rated up to 200g.
I'd have to say it's only half what you need.
But, it's a quality skimmer, so it may get you by for awhile while you search for one larger.

Tank is complete now. Trim is done and it's ready to come home....which is why I'm up at 4am in a cold sweat trying to figure out how to get everything done!

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b87/subman001/3_photo-1.jpg

The main problem (besides getting it downstairs!) is it's going right where my current setup is so it looks like I'll need to tear down, move and re setup the current setup so I can place this tank and take my time getting the carpentry and plumbing done right.
I'm sure it will all come together just having big tank jitters!

Don't take any advice from me at this point as I have been taking things Very slowly. But I will say this;
Do not rush it, get it into place, have a look, plan stuff, take a week, plan it again, look it over, find the flaws, look it over, ...........
I re-made my sump 2 times and re-plumbed my tank once.
That's now my 3rd sump design and my 2nd drain plumbing, in case anyone is keeping track.

Hope all goes well for ya

I'm far from an expert but I'll tell you what we did, or you can read it in my build thread.

I had to set up the tank in the same spot as the old one, just like you. So I set up the sump and moved all the corals and livestock and a few live rocks into it with a powerhead and a heater and set up my light overtop of it. I moved the live rock into a rubbermaid BRUTE and stuck a heater and a couple powerheads in there.

Then we took our time. 3 days to move the old tank out, clean it, and help the buyer load it onto their trailer. We moved the new stand and tank into the spot and positioned it properly. Then I filled it, moved all the livestock back in and set it up with the heater, lights and powerheads. I didn't fill it to the drain though. I only had it circulating with a few powerheads. This buys you plenty of time to plumb everything properly. You can run without a skimmer for a few days, it's not a big deal, just do a couple water changes if you are worried about water quality or have a mdoerate to heavy bioload. Then when your plumbing glue cures and you do the leak test and everything's good you don't have to bother transitioning everyone again. They are already in your tank! We had no casualties and no mini cycle after doing it this way. Total days from tear down to having the plumbing finished was a 6 days. It was actually surprisingly easy. I wasn't expecting it to go so well.

Of course if you could set up a temporary tank that would be better but we didn't have one or want to spend the money on one and also we didn't have any other reefer friends up here who could lend us tank space in their set ups, so this was kind of the only option for us.

I have a lot of pipe and fittings here, so maybe go shopping here beforehand, I can always make a trip to the wholesale as well for odds and ends.
I tore my meniscus in my knee last fall, finally got in to get it repaired. No worries, good as new now(so they tell me).
But seriously if you need me, let me know, we'll get the plumbing done.

I guess any techniques that have worked to make it easier. dollies, crazy carpets ect.

gregzz4
04-06-2012, 05:35 AM
Well, getting it as close to the stairs as possible on some kind of table or sawhorses helps.
Not knowing what you are dealing with for stairs and turns, I'd suggest you set up some saw horses or such at the bottom of the stairs as this is when everyone should take a rest. Besides that, it's just a matter of keeping the tank off the floor.
Do not set it down on edges and try not to twist it.
As for dollies and carpets, that all depends on the layout of your home.
They are useful when you are not dealing with stairs, but the stairs should be a fluid move; no trying to set it down. You can rest it on your thigh, but you really should keep going until you can set it down flat.

Does that help answer your question?

waynemah

I ended up sliding mine down the stairs on several clean blankets. It was the easiest part of the whole move.

The bottom area will be for my two profilux power bars, vortech cotrollers, Radion Ballasts and a UPS back up. The Box is completely sealed except for a hole for the cords that will have a rubber fitting (or something like it) to seal it as well.

Just a quick update, Ive been working on getting the stand done. Would have been done sooner but the NHL playoffs have been a lottle distracting!!

Here are some pics:

I covered the bottom plywood with a sheet of melamine so its not pressure treated plywood directly on the carpet.

I had a few questions about the electronic box so I'll post up some info. Its made of mdf (I know mdf and water is no good but it was sealed with kilz oil based primer and then a latex top coat) all the edges were glue and nailed with finishing nail.
As for equipment in it my Profilux 2 is on the top shelf. The left side has the 2 radion ballasts (room for a couple more), two of the planned 4 mp40 controllers on the right. In the middle is the two profilux controlled power bars. I placed panduit around the box to contain most of the wiring but need to add more or swap it out with larger ones.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b87/subman001/2012-04-23_23-42-55_623.jpg

I've removed the UPS from this picture but it will supply power to a heater, pump and one mp40 for about an hour.

Have you ever had your power go out for an extended period ? We did a couple years ago for the first time in 17 years. It was out overnight and I had to run the gas fireplace. Because of that, I have a BU battery for my Vortechs that can run both at 50% for up to 36 hours. If you're interested I'll send you the link for that little build.
And, sorry, I don't mean to be critical ...
Is there much heat thrown by those ballasts ? I was wondering how it may affect your powerbars

Ive been using that ups for a couple years and Ive had the power go out a couple times for an hour or so. I had to adjust what I had powered off of it but I would get almost an. I hour running 2t5s, a 200w heater and an mp10. (The first power outage using it I had everything on it lol lasted 5 min rofl) I was thinking of getting the vortech one but I like picking what runs.

From what I've seen from these ballasts they don't really produce any heat at all barely warm.

Today I was looking at micro pc setups and might throw one in there to remotely log in and program everything (profilux & radions). Then put a lcd moitor in there just to.look cool lol. Maybe even some web cams later.

If you do decide to get one and want to save some money, I built mine for under $100 and it will run longer than the OE unit. You can decide how many pumps to hook up to it.

Have you seen an EEE before ? They originally came out with a 7" screen, but I think they have 10" now

As I was looking at all the equipment you have in your electical box (and it looks impressive!) I was wondering if you have any ventelation to disperse the heat, or is there so little heat that it is not an issue? I will not have room in my stand for this kind of box but will likely build something to to sit beside my stand and I am trying to think through the construction of it.

subman
04-25-2012, 06:04 PM
I had thought about the heat building up but the only thing producing heat is the Radion ballasts and they barely produce any heat. If I was still running halides I would have a fan pressuring the box to also force any humidity out (still might for that reason). Also the front is going to be a magnetic skin so it's not sealed in the front.

I hate plumbing....I have been putting it off for as long as possible lol.

The two 3/4" flex lines go to each return pump, I have installed a union ball valve on each line because the pumps I have are very extreme and I may need to turn them down.

The 2 1-1/2" pipes are drain lines. The one in the middle is for emergency only hence it is a straight pipe down. The other (my leaky pipe lol) has two 90's (I know 90's are very constrictive but I wanted the pipes tight to the top for appearances) in it to bring it to the first section of my sump. I have a knife valve to control flow for the herbie style drain. I have a gate valve coming but the knife will have to do till it arrives.

The biggest recommendation I have is to plan it out buy all your fittings ect. and dry fit it to see if you like the way it looks. I spent 3 tanks of gas driving around buying plumbing parts last week, probably spent as much on gas as the parts!:twised:

only issue I'm having now is setting the drain perfectly with the knife valve. So I've got a gate valve coming in tomorrow from Kelly at The Reef Shoppe in Lloyd. I can't recommend doing a herbie with a knife it's far to imprecise. I think it may be possible with less flow but my returns are pumping approx. 4000gph and I can't seem to find the sweet spot.

I was told by the lfs I bought it from there was no metalin it...but it has to go and today it will. I'll disassemble it and check, just for piece of mind.

Other than adding more radions thats it. I am working an automated curtain that will drop down. For not only protection from a frisky game of pool but this is also right beside my home theater room, and it's hard to set the mood with the room glowing ultra blue lol

I started with 1x 1 1/2 but that was wayyy to small so I replaced it with 2x2 .

Thanks, think I will order up a few feet. Makes things so neat.

Just wondering about your wire duct - did it come in the grey color, or did you paint it? I have only been able to find black.

Buy it from an electrical wholesaler, eecol for example. It comes in white, black and grey in different sizes. http://www.panduit.com/Products/ProductOverviews/ProductSearch/index.htm?lastNodeId=ss_prod_wiringduct&N=5000001+1010&Nu=P_RollupKey

Thats exactly where I bought it although I would recommended T&B brand instead of panduit far less expensive.

As for the livestock the transfer went very well all the fish are doing great and are loving the space. I did loose my cleaner shrimp  and a handful of snails aren't doing so well. I made a mistake and didn't recheck my salinity before moving things over. The salinity was dead on 1.020 when I filled it but over the week that I moved rock in and got ready for the fishes I removed water and topped off and....after the shrimp died the salinity was 1.010. The snails I thought all died but when I went to remove them they weren't dead but seemed to be stunned. I've been slowly brining it up and they are mostly back to normal now.

Some more things on the to-do list:

-Chris is building me a custom top off tank and it's going on a pull out shelf for easy filling.
- install a couple cheap webcams on each side of the sump so I can check on things when I'm away from home or even when the skirting is on without removing it.
- control the diatom issue:twised:
-add some frags to the frag section
- Get some more fishies!!

Is there enough air circulation there to keep it from over heating
The dosing unit itself isn't vented so there shouldn't be any need to assume it has space requirements for air circulation. I don't think they run very hot, the motors are small run at low speeds.

On the side note, the money you spend on 1 radion you can almost get 2 vegas, not saying it's better but just stating a fact.

Not exactly I actually had the Radions for sale and had a buyer for them last week, I had a conference in Ottawa so he was going to pick them up this week. Then I learn last night Ecotech has dropped the MSRP on the radions, the price for new was less than I was hoping to get for them. I'm not prepared to take a $800 loss in a year so I am really forced to keep them (not all that bad I still love them) so now the Vega's are for sale and I have a order in for a couple more radions.

I will try to get a par meter and do that although the par meter and leds don't seem to jive the readings are a little miss leading.

As for a side by side comparison now that I have the controller (which is ok at best) the vega's are very close in brightness using my eye meter. I find the Radions have less of the disco ball effect but only noticeable if you are looking for it. I have seen a great deal of growth in all my corals under both lights and with the right amount of tweaking the corals and fish pop under both lights. I think at this point both of these lights are very comparable, and both ways of setting them up leave a lot to be desired.

the radions are a superior fixture to the sol or vega. the sol will have a higher par directly under the fixture but the radion will have a higher par over a larger area and a more complete spectrum. Great build and nice comparison.

Beside my lighting dilemma I finally got my Profilux dosing pump hooked up and running. Thing are growing like crazy now. My alkalinity was quite low causing the calcium levels to be high so after a week of dosing only 10ml a day of alk they are getting close to balanced. Impressive build.

whoa! That's some tidy job there! Sometimes it pays to be a little OCD I guess LOL. Seriously, if you're bored can you come tidy my electrical?

Wait, why do you have two controllers??

Nice panel!

I need to do something like that with mine! We have a bunch of old cable trays at work that I could put to good use.

Well it wasn't really planned to run two controllers, but I bought the second one used for a few parts that were included. It actually became easier to set up two separate p2's (I don't want to shell out for a p3 :twised:) I am running four power bars, a doser (one more coming), the lcd display, ATO and its running my sol. I'm sure I could get everything to run off one but I like the options running 2 gives me.

So after months of using my current at water container, I was having problems with the amount of actual water it held. So after some brainstorming I thought about using acrylic tubes mounted inside my old larger container so I could maximize water capacity but still have my dosing chemicals contained in it..... So after a quick visit to Saco polymers I put these together... http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b87/subman001/20130308_151108_zpsf9b09d27.jpg

They hold just under 2L each and I decided to not attach them to the tank but to leave them mobile for ease of cleaning and refilling.

Here they are installed....

Not a great pic sorry.

So my water capacity went from about 5gal to about 30g a much needed increase.

such a good idea. my ATO reservoir is only 6 gallons and I have to fill it back up every 24hrs or so. sucks!

Really nice build but I'd like to see you do something about the light rack it looks like to much metal. Maybe just hang the lights individually

Thanks for the feedback. It actually looks like way less metal in person. I like it because it gives me flexibility to move, add or god forbid change lights without having to drill any extra holes in the ceiling.

Wow! I had time finally today to read through your whole build. Very nice setup and work you did to keep things neat and tidy. I am working on my build and I will definitely be using your setup as a model for ideas etc.

I am fighting through the light issue right now and I see you have some, well, experience in the topic. I think your studies have shown me the lights that I now want for my tank! I just wanted to thank you for that! The decision has been hurting my head!
