4 10" RGB LED strips with a mini transformer and controller for $40, I had to give them a shot. The remotely wired controller allows you to choose any color on constant or a random change with or without fade.

I also rewired the canopy and the PC ballast to allow or better timing options. I added a single gang timer right in to the ballast to control the PC lights only and direct wired the fans and the moonlight LEDs. Eliminates the all on or all off deal from the factory.

Just finished up and things look pretty cool. The IKEA LEDs are bright enough to add some color even while the 2 36 watt PCs are on and really make things glow on their own.

These are called "dioder" lights at IKEA and they have flexible versions as well.

Pics to follow.

Very interesting. I just checked the Ikea website, they only show a round version of the lights but with the same controller. What do you mean by "flexible"?

What are the 2 buttons on the controller on either side of the on/off switch?

What is your last photo of?

I'm trying to get some metallic GSP to grow on a nice big shell, it's just tossed in for now.

The 2 buttons are a fading color change function and an abrupt color change function.

The last pic is the JBJ ballast with the 9V transformer removed and a Leviton timer wired and installed right in the ballast.

They are pretty bright and the ability to choose any color as an accent color is unique.

The IKEA website shows a version that has a flexible strip as opposed to the solid strips. Everything else looks to be the same.

That pic is with the PC lights on? What kind of penetration with just the LED's?

Could you snap a couple of pics and go through the color wheel? This seems almost too good to be true.

That first pic is just the LEDs on a near pure blue setting. I will snap some more pics tonight and post.

Pure red and pure blue are really cool. The blue makes all the greens glow and the red brings all the coralline out. A mixture, or purple, is my favorite.

This is a quick iPhone video of the LEDs using the scroll wheel to move through the color range. Room is dark and no other lighting is on. End of video is the purple color that shows off the greens and reds.

I wonder how the growth will be. Are you going to use the PC's as well or just stick with the LED's? I have a nano that I'm building that could use those if they turn out to work well.

And the $40 was for all 4 strips with controller?

$40 for the LEDs, all in one kit, $3 for the Swedish meatballs and fries.

Not sure they will affect growth at all at their wattage and I plan to still use the PC lighting. I may use them as dawn/dusk lights. They are best used to bring out the colors and have some fun with I think.
