Can anybody recommend a good Protein Skimmer for a 1200 gallon system? Thank you.

1200 gallon. My gosh! You should create a build thread.
As for skimmer, Mr.Wilson & nineball are using a RK2 25PE on their 1300 gallon system. I think they have a build thread here but not sure if they update the thread. If not,their thread on RC is frequently updated. Good luck.

With any system redundancy is a key, especially large systems.
Why not get two large skimmers instead of one huge one?
It will be way cheaper, more reliable, nothing custom built and easy to get (no waiting time for special orders).
Also when you have to take one of the skimmers out for cleaning and servicing you will still have the other one chugging along and doing its job.
And, you will not have to pay huge bills for electricity.

I do like the idea of 2, we are building the sump custom, 12 feet long by 3 feet wide. Kind of considering building one

If you have the water from the display come down into different skimmer box chambers, then you can drop two or three skimmers into their own section and not worry about one interfering with the other. With 12' to work with, I would even go with four skimmers each rated for say 400+g so you have enough capacity. You could add splitters and ball valves so that the flow can be diverted to a different skimmer box chamber if you have to take a skimmer out to service so the water is still being skimmed. This would also allow you to add more skimmers later and then open up a valve to feed it.

With 3' of width to play with in the sump, then I would create a channel in the back to allow the skimmed water to flow down to where your return pump sits while the front 2' serve as your skimmer box. So if I was build a custom sump, my skimmer boxes (where each skimmer sits in water with a constant level) would be say 2' x 2' and the side panels would be a few inches taller while the back panel would be say 10" (or whatever is the recommended water level for the skimmers chosen). Then each box has its own feed line with valve and all the cleaned water would go out the back and flow to your return.

There was a thread on RC awhile ago i saw with a guy with a 1500 system who had 3 external skimmers, 2 rated to take the whole tank. Redundancy is a GREAT idea, so that if you have to take one out for a bit you can still survive. He would clean out each one a month apart so that the break-in didn't really affect the tank much. I'll try to find the link, it was a very well done build. He had 4 return pumps each with a flow sensor that would automatically take one out if the flow dropped below a certain amount and start up another. Can't wait to see more details on the build, good luck with the system.
