I have a ton of freshwater experience, but absolutely no reef experience, other than the past month of cycling my 37G. Now that all the levels are nil, I put a couple of zoa colonies from my lfs in the tank to get me going about a week ago. I got a bunch of hitchhikers, 3 brittle stars, some shrimp looking things, a ton of different worms, and some little bugs that crawl inbetween the zoas.

While the zoas have mostly stayed closed since they've been in the tank, there were two that always seemed to be open, and active at that. When open, they look very similar to the other zoas, but they seemed different. Their base/foot wasnt like the other zoas, and they were rooted in little tunnels in the rock.

This morning I noticed one in the middle of the tank, attached to what appears to be a dead shrimp. It finally hit me - those two things I thought were just mutant zoas might be anemones, or perhaps a different type of coral. There are two other things on the rock that I cannot identify. Let me know what you think! If they are, I got some research to do.

Its starting to stretch its tentacles out a bit, and they have that unique bubble tip shape with white tips. I think I got lucky. The other one is mainly closed right now. What a cool little surprise today!

Like I said, I'm so fresh to the reef hobby that I wouldn't have the slightest clue. Here are two more photos, one of each of them if it helps. And pardon the crap allover the rocks and zoas, I just added a bit more live sand and that stuff went everywhere.

I overlooked this thinking it was your signature. Im a PoCo rat, born there, but moved 10 times across the country. Just moved back to BC from Calgary a few months ago. I love that new Golden Ears bridge!

The loose one is a majono.. The one in the zoa rock is a common green polyp some sort of a Paly.

baste those zoas off and they may open up for ya.

Are you positive they are different? They were right beside each other, looked identical (both have a large pinkish "foot"), and behaved similar. One just happened to move.

Edit: I guess its time to get a siringe and vinegar out to kill it.

I would leave it be until you are sure it is a mojano, but I have ever only seen them fully formed. Arn't the arms a little short compared to the base size?

Definitely. They look like stubby bubble tips, but they arent long enough to really even flow in the current.

looks like a fuzzy mushroom or a riccordea to me
first rock i ever bought had some little white things that looked like those
turned out to be purple and green riccordea
also had a fuzzy mushroom rock fall and one was underneath the rock in the sand for a couple of months and thats almost exactly how it looked when it was getting colours back

I'm a risk taker, so I'd probably leave it for now and see what they grow into...

I agree with the mushroom comment. I have a bunch of fuzzy mushies and the little ones look like that.
