Originally after deciding to move, I thought I'd do without a tank for the two years it will take me to finish my BA... now I realize that that is simply not an option. Nano time. After seeing the great job Evan did on his, I decided "I gotta get me one of them". So Evan had this ready for me yesterday:

12x12x18.25" outside, 1/4" Starphire - total volume is ~10 gallons. Wicked base also by Evan, with styrofoam already in place. The tank will probably sit on a desk. Should be a great place to display a half dozen of my favorite SPS corals.

That was the first thing I noticed, the base. Very slick!

Great, I hate seeing people leave the hobby even if it's just for a short time. I believe you'll be glad you made this decision. That's a nice looking tank, you'll have alot of fun with it.

(I don't know whether to post in this thread on in Evan's!)

What is the L-shaped aluminium for the base, and how did it get mitered (i.e., what spiffy tool do you need to do that).

I'm not quite sure I follow though, about the need for a base? Is it just so it can sit on top a piece of styrofoam and keep it all sort of tucked in together? Please educate me..

Tony - The aluminum is 1/8" thick 1 1/2" L Snhaped aluminum which you can get at Rona etc... To do the mitre cut I used my compound mitre saw and a blade for non ferrous metals.

The main purpose of the base is for looks and to hide the foam and protect the corners of the glass. I also make this one the same as mine with 3/4" MDF notched out for the aluminum so that legs can optionally be screwed in later.

Dear God not the brown fuzzy sticks. This tank will be strictly blues, purples, greens and maybe a yellow. Still debating fish choices.

One more question, how did you mate the aluminium pieces together? Did you make some kind of corner bracket, or are they welded, or ....... ???

Tony - You cut a 1 3/8" wide by 1/8" deep groove around the entire outside 3/4" MDF square and then glue the aluminum to it so it's all nice and flush

very nice.....

Don't you think a 250watt MH over that is a little much?

Jesse it is a lot and I'm still kinda tossing the idea around. In the thread I started regarding coral colour, it seems we ended up with "wattage may or may not affect colour". However all the corals I have and will be procurring for this tank are under 400s now, and I'm not sure I want to drop too much. If I do go with a 250, it will be at least 10" above the tank...

with 250 or 400 MH over that I would think you will need a chiller.

Wendell

he could do a 250 watt in an enclosed fixture above the tank and it wouldent impart much heat at all (if any) to the tank.

well concidering that to day I have my hand 1/2" under one and it was only slightly warm I would say ya.. it would put hardly any heat into the tank in a open system.. sorry if some one should dare disagree with your greatness.

Is it considered talking to yourself when your married I mean, God knows no one listens to you in your house.
