now lets hope they stay out of my carpet, my sixline actually likes them believe it or not and he hates all new arrivals:twised::twised:

Nice!!
6 line terrors
Mine hated new arrivals as well. Too bad he decided to carpet surf. Try catching him with a small hook. They are gluttons and easy to catch. If you could put him in QT for a week, it would help all around.

Pretty cool, I was admiring those guys a couple days ago. (Or some very similar anyhow..) What species are they? They're wicked purdy at any rate.

What colour carpet you got Denny?

its a dragonface pipefish and another pod eaters for my tank as im getting rid of my sixline , these guys are pretty cool and so far they are displaying all the behavior that i read on them.

the carpet is a green carpet its been a model citizen but ive had a few over the years and its only a matter of time, hes very responsive for a carpet already got my around my wrist once.i feed him mysis as a supplement the rest he gets from my feeding the tank.i got him at big als i believe he was only 40 he was around 6-10" and is now doubled in size after 3 mths.theres a whole section in my tank i have put aside im thinking about moving him there soon i just hate to root him up i think when he shrinks down again i may scoop him from the sand.

i was given a 75g cube the other day it can be drilled so im thinking i may go species tank im still thinking about it hahaha i got a long list of to do's lol :)

Are they going into a large or small tank. I was looking at a pair today but heard they were not reef safe? Updates on their status would be appreciated.

its a 90g reef ive only gotten them today but so far so good they didnt take long to explore the tank and there is an abundance of pods so we will see how their first week goes, they def arent shy or scare easily and they are not afraid of me so im just hoping it can get its diet from my tank while i find out if it will take anything else for food ill just go through the trial and error phase :) time will tell :):)

I am looking for some dragonface pipefish as well. They are said to eat acropora eating red bugs and black bugs, sor very befinicial for a SPS reef tank.

ive seen those they are very nice do you run a fuge??

im hoping i can produce enough pods for them i average almost 2:1 for liverock and run a large fuge with dsb, cheato, halimeda, caulerpa, mangroves and even some more macro showing up tomorrrow , i believe im gonna have to get rid of my six line hes just too much compition for food but ill monitor them closely for a week and see how it goes.ive had the tank for 4 mths now and its been running over 4yrs before me if i remember correctly. i do feed cyclopeeze, mysis, brine, nls pellets to my tank and i feed ultra clam twice a day lol im really hoping for the best im reading lots of low term success not much after 3 yrs so well see :)

true but what ive been reading is that they dont eat fast enough to finish a red bug population so useless for it plus its hit or miss same with feeding prepared foods hit or miss.my theory is since they hunt copepods and copepods tend to grow better in lps or mixed reefs where tanks tend to be dirtier and heavy feedings that it can survive off a healthy pod population , and since they are not timid i may be able to get them on prepared.....still though no long term success anywhere that i can find.

id say go for it they are def know to be hardy it would be interesting to know how long they live for???

yeah ya got to be picky i picked out my pair because they seemed to be very together and active wide open eyes, searching for food etc.

right now tonight they were seperated on each side of the tank and right now they are perched on the top of a piece of liverock with their tails wrapped together lol pretty cute i gotta say they def like each other:P

I talked with the guy at the Lfs and he said he's kept them with fair succes and never has special fed them
They just get by on pods bugs and detritus. And I guess also food from feeding other fish and corals

I would not if I were you you need to find out about it food needs and whether you can guarantee to meet those needs or they will starve to death.

You need to determine whether your tank provides a similar environment to the environment they were taken from.

You need to find out whether they are compatible with the fish you already have and the ones you are planning to have.

Find out about the above and wait to see what success reefwars has than talk to the wife.

Love the pipe fish! Have had min for over a year now. He only eats pods. He goes hunting with my dragonette. It's cute.

Saw some at Ocean's and controlled myself. I saw Greg's briefly when they were out and they're so neat to watch.

Based on how both my wrasses reacted to the new filefish pecking at pods I'm wondering how these would fare in my tank. Did your wrasses ever react with aggression to yours? They don't look like they'd stand up to much...

Ya, they are very timid and would not stand against any sort of aggression. No one seemed to care about him though. Not even a sideways glare. They probably didn't know what to make of him since he doesn't really swim. He just sort of slinks around which is kind of creepy actually.

ya i dont think they would take any harrassment their def fragile, i alrady thought mine was a goner as my very large sand goby decided to sift sand, my pipefish decided to lay on the sand and then my goby sifted my pipefishes head.....bet that woke the piper up lol:P

so far no luck on prepared foods all pods

well lost one today, when i woke up this morning the end of his tail was missing by the time i got home this afternoon he was toast and being eaten by my elegance, i dont have any ornamental crabs but there are a few hitchhikers maybe it was one of them since the pipefish sleep on the sand bed and dont move all night.

the other guy is nice and healthy and getting fat, kinda sux he lost his brother, now i need to go crab hunting tonight:twised:

just an update:)

remaining pipefish is doing great and is now eating cyclopeeze , wasnt easy been clouding the tank like crazy to the point its shot my nitrates right up but worth it as hes starting to eat prepared foods.
for some reason he has buddied up with mymaxima clam, today he actually was inside the clam, the clam doesnt mind as the pipefish is so gentle but he now sleeps next to the clam every night and hangs around it when not hunting for pods its pretty cute.if this guy makes it to the 6mth mark i may replace the one i lost.

i also picked up a pair of banded pipefish the other day and unlike the dragonface who spends all its time on its stomach sliding on the rocks and sand these guys swim out in the open exploring every thing they can:P

the banded pipefish are eating chopped mysis/cycopeeze:):)

pods are gonna be more plentyful as my mandarin is MIA
