Hey Guys/gals,

Just wanted to say hey, and let u know a little about me. Just getting into salt water tanks and have decided to get into it and learn alot about reef tank. I have a 29gal tank with a eheim classic250 canister filter, 550gph power head, a glo 24" balast with blue and white light t5 HO.

I had my tank set up with sand and water with no live rock for 4-5 days and just got live rock two days ago. when i went to get the rock person selling it was shutting down his tank to move to the states and he gave me 5 corals.

He gave me a nice big chalice about 4-5", a torch coral, a chili coral, a hammer coral, and a bubble coral, along with some mushrooms. Unfortunately my rock has some fire worms in my tank and i woke up this morning after feeding my coral last night to notice one of the heads of the torch coral is half plucked out.

I am going to be trying to make a trap along with getting a coral banded shrimp.

I also have some fuzzy purple growing on my live rock. Talking to a local i was told to turkey baster it off, and that is what i intend to do. I will add pictures soon, i'm still new to forums so it may take me a little.

Any information will go a long way with me, as i am very eager to learn.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Use photobucket and copy the IMG code into the post. That's the best way since canreef gives such small space for pics

from what it looks like to me.
.The snail is a tropical abalone (A ferocious algae eater)
.the decayed head of the torch is not possible to bring back.I would give your entire coral an iodine bath.
.Chalice color changing possibly of light changes or placement in the tank, its fine and healthy looking. As long as it doesn't start to recede or skin flaking off.
.purple plant I am not of the name.the yellow looks like diatom.
.purple green and red looks like calcareous plants.
I am sure more people will chime in:biggrin:

What type of thermometer would u suggest... Don't really like the surface strips that go in the outside... What do u think about the stuff growing on my live rock

Iodine bath is use for any new coral added to your tank or an unhealthy coral.dip in a mild iodine based solution as a bio-security measure to help insure that pathogens are removed from the coral, let coral sit for about 10minutes then remove rinse with new tank water and place in the tank as for the bath water has to be discarded.find the iodine dropper in a drug store.place approximately 20 drops in a 1 gallon of the tank water.
Hope that helps.

So it's been two weeks now ... I have experienced a diatom bloom( still existing) and now am starting to get hair algae( long green stringy algae).

My coral is doing just fine. My chalice is now starting to get I very nice hue if red all over( believe these are polyps).

I have discovered I have 2 crabs in my live rock living( haven't had money to get uncooked shrimp yet to see why kind they are) and have a coral banded shrimp I purchased to help control the fireworm population. Not sure if it's possible or what they look like but I think my cerith snail laid eggs cAuse there was what lookes like air bubbles stuck in a thin web but over night alot have gone away so I'm not sure.

When can I get a cleaner crew for my tank? I know I'm cycling right now. But how do u control the algae?

I think you should be ok to add your CUC!

We had quite a bit of hair algae after our initial cycle. CUC couldn't keep up, so we did a couple of black outs, left the lights off for 3-4 days at a time. We didn't have corals at the time, just fish, but it did the job. Whatever was left was then manageable for the cleaners!

Awesome ... Probly pick one up next pay... What should I be using as a CUC?

So just a little update to what is going on with my tank. I got some Mexican turbo thanks to coralgirl and they took care of the hair algae I had growing and the mysterious purple fuzzy algae relatively fast. Since then algae has been under control but some yellow patches still hear and there but I'm just sucking them up with the syringe. Still trying to find what else I should use for a CUC. Thinking about getting a watchman golby.

My coral banded shrimp had shed once already and the bristle worms have died down alot. And I have found 2 hitchhikers and removed them. I have finally wait about a month and a half and gave into getting some colour to dance in my tank. I got a pair of damsels to start just so I have some more to look at. I also got a cleaner wrassle but he didnt make it more that 24 hours for somereason. I tested water this morning after noticing and everything was 0 and ph was a little low at 7.9. Hear they can be finicky so maybe I'll try them later on after I get somemore fish.

I am going to be getting a skimmer that hangs on the back. I'm not 100% clear on what it does for the tank but I know it's a good idea and takes any floaters off the top of the water lol

Also getting another glo light so then the I can run dusk and dawn with my lights and my corals will be much happier.

My roomate randomly bought me a small colony of zoas and they haven't really come out yet but I'll wait a bit and see what they do. Maybe after the new light is added they will do better.

Here are some new pics cause I had to rearrange the rock for when I got the snails.
