I changed up my bioload/stocking plan and decided to go hard-core into reef-safe wrasses with my present setups. The nice thing is that if they get along, then you can keep more different colourful species of r-s wrasses than with the larger fish that I normally kept before.
Now I have:
Blue flasher
Filament flasher
Carpenter's flasher
Temminckii fairy
Exquisite fairy
2 x Orange back fairy
Solarensis fairy
Lubbock's fairy
Yellow Flank fairy
Green wrasse
Cleaner wrasse
Ornate Leopard
Leopard wrasse (2 reg. females)
Potter's Leopard
Surprisingly, almost all these wrasses get along (probably because I feed frequently and heavily). My baby girl, Isabella, loves to watch the colourful wrasses swimming around, which is one of the reasons I started this collection.
I'm finding that as long as the new wrasse survives the initial harassment from the Candy Hogfish, then it hides for a day or two before joining the gang.
The second female reg. Leopard Wrasse is still finding its way into the hierarchy but its eating mysis and I'm hoping that it's presence will trigger the other female (or itself) to morph into a male (green-blue colour) leopard wrasse.
So, just wondering how many others are getting into these colourful little reef-safe fish?

I have a male leopard wrasse that was a female when I got it. He changed over the course of about 2 months this summer. I'd like to add another one.
Also have a mystery wrasse that I picked up about 2 months ago - I love it!
Over the years I've had a handful diffrent wrasses, and have had many jump out, so keep a lid on your set up!

I have glass tops on all my tanks now. Lose some light but great for controlling evaporation and keep fish from jumping although I've picked up my Temminckii twice from the floor when it jumped through when I didn't put the lid on properly after feeding.

Sold off the old "yellow tangs tank" a few months ago. Decided that instead of a few large tangs, my remaining systems will do better with smaller, more colourful fish. Luckily we have a couple of good LFS around here that order in a lot of different wrasses (for me:wink:).
Adding a Melanarus wrasse & maybe a Mystery wrasse during Boxing Day sales.
Would love a Linneatus and Blue Star Leopard wrasse to add to my collection.
PS. Picked up a true Exquisite Fairy Wrasse, a Yellow Flank Fairy, and a Potter's Leopard today. (Dangerous to be obsessive-compulsive and have credit at the LFS)

Heh, if it's off a credit, who cares :p Now if it's off a credit CARD that might be another matter.
I too have a soft spot for the wrasses particularly the fairy wrasses. But have had bad luck with jumping over the years, even on covered tanks. I had a nice pair of blue sided fairies that one weekend I was away the tank sitter forgot to close the lid one night and both of them jumped out. What are the odds. :(
Lost a few other fairies over the years to jumping and the darn things just landing on the Eurobracing and not flippityflopping back into the water.Just lost a canary wrasse last night. Boo. :( Really is not a question of "hopefully they never jump" - forget it, they WILL jump at some point - you just have to hope they fall back into the water.
Have a pair of flame wrasses now though which has me super excited! I'll try to post some pics later.

I am a bigtime wrasseman......lubocks in the small tank......mystery, leopard and melenarus in the big tank......Ive pledged to not put any really expensive wrasses in this version of the tank, aside from the mystery..... Ive had a lineatus carpet surf before.....I like my tanks topless so I am still kinda rolling the dice....

Lubbock's are fantastic little fairy wrasses!! Had one a while back, one of the few I didn't lose to jumping, but one of many I did lose to that stupid ritteri anemone and it's little trick of killing fish with its invisible death ray. :( I lost a rubriventralis that way too (another totally underrated fairy wrasse IMHO - have one right now and he displays like crazy. Looks awesome.)
But one habit he that he does have that has me right on edge - at around the time the lights go off, he's jumping for what appears to be the sheer fun of it. Nobody is chasing him, he's not going after food - he's just literally jumping and skipping over the water surface. Lasts about 5-10 minutes. I figure it's only a matter of time before this high-risk recreational jumping activity is going to end badly. :( I need to figure out how to get some netting up stat.

Yes, and once bitten, it causes the victim to trade Visa cards and cash for colourful little fish while in a zombie-like state. Victims stand helplessly in front of LFS tanks, drooling and mumbling "wrasse, wrasse" (instead of "brains, brains"). Its highly contagious. I recommend you get yourself innoculated, thus leaving more wrasses for ME!!!!:twised::lol:

Here's my picture contribution. Only have 1 wrasse; its a McCoskers. Its a great fish, eats everything and takes it from the surface, mid water and the bottom. Likes to display to the firefish and neon gobies (hopes to get cleaned but the neons don't seem to want to do any cleaning!). The white specks in the last photos are food particles.

If you get a chance stop in at the store and ask Shaun or Chris to show you the purple wrasse in with the Kuiter's. He looks almost identical to yours. He came in as a temeniki but I'm not so sure if it is or not. I've been trying to get a pic but he's impossible to photograph.

Wrasses love to jump. Plus, the only wrasse I have ever had were agressive little bastard...a checkerboard that was attacking my pajama cardinal and a yellow wrasse that could not suffer my mandarins...so that did it for me and the wrasseholes.

Yeah, they can be jumpers so my tank will have a screen top made in the next couple days with 1/4" mesh. So far he's content in my new 8' with a couple other small fish that don't harass him so he hasn't jumped.
He's super cute but he freaked me out when I brought him home. While acclimating he "played possum" I thought he had kicked the bucket but nope he was pretending

Wow, love your long fin fairy- I had one he was one of my faves; I had to trade him in for a less aggressive mckosker flasher. But when I get my larger tank a long fin will definetly be in my mix of fish fo sho!!
And an eightline flasher WOW...I have never heard of someone actually having one. They are very hard to come by IMO. Beautiful fish.
Thank you, the long fin is the runt of my wrasses and was very timid at first but has come around nicely and is always out swimming with the bigger guys & gals.
I agree, eight line's are definitely a rare find. I'm glad to have him. His fins are so huge and stunning compared to other flashers.
I'm hopeful that my with time my female long tail will turn male. I'm contemplating bringing home the last remaining female at the store in hopes of making a pair.

I really loved this rosefascia wrasse. It was always following me around when I did tank maintenance. When I got it,it was so tiny,it would get blown around in the current. I had it for about 4 years, then it developed some kind of parasite(stringy poop) and stopped eating and passed on. Hoping I can get another. You can see my Rosescales on the bottom right.

Wrasses are EVIL!!!
There really should be a warning label at all LFS saying, "CAUTION: Wrasses are HIGHLY ADDICTIVE! Please proceed with CAUTION!"
Anyhow, I just came back from 2 weeks in LA. My biggest fear all trip was to return to an empty tank and all my Wrasses dead or MIA. Luckily, I returned to no casualties with my Wrasses. I only lost a couple of clams and a few SPS.
I'd like to thank d-bo for contributing to my addiction with a Mystery Wrasse added to my collection. Unfortunately, I met him at J&L and they just so happened to have a Naoko Wrasse available. My biggest question was, how often do you come across such a rare Wrasse nonetheless a MALE! Of course I couldn't help myself!!!
Wrasse Family:
Pair of Hawaiian Flame (Male & Female)
Pair of Yellow Coris (Male & Female)
Male Lineatus
Male Laboutei
Male Naoko

*Male Golden Rhomboid still on order and should hopefully arrive this week.

So where are the pics Ken??
I have two wrasses
Very Yellow Coris... when I first got him he played Possum with me and scared me to death.
Threadfin Flasher... he is a wonderfully sweet addition.
Have had Green Coris... he was large, moved him and he died in protest, ugh!
Had a Mystery...true to his name it was a mystery as to why I kept it as long as I did.
Had a Solar...sadly my angel chased it till he jumped... one too many times.
Had a Melanarus...sold him.
Have had my fair share...but I am fussy about my wrasses.

Thanks Eduardo! I'm not a patient guy, but I had to wait almost a month for this last wrasse.
I've wanted to get a pair of leopards but everytime I ask the LFS to feed them, they never eat so I get nervous and walk away. Went back a few days ago and they were still there so I said I'll take the chance on them and see how it goes. I put them in and they vanished until today! Once I saw them out and about, I threw my usual mix of food and at first they didn't seem interested and I started to worry but then the smaller of the 2 started to nibble at the larger pieces of mysis. Then it started to eat everything that floated by. The larger one still didn't seem to want to eat but finally a large piece of mysis went by and it took a bite! I couldn't believe it, the first day of feeding and they are eating frozen.
Here is a crappy, out of focus, pic of them.

Hooded Fairy Wrasses, Tongan Flame Wrasses, and as well as the Nahacky's Fairy Wrasse are all variants of each other. This particular Wrasse has more similarities to the Coral Sea Hooded Fairy Wrasse than the Tongan Flame. I've spent the past few hours Googling and comparing pics of each variant of the species.
It has settled in with my Wrasse family very well. No fighting at all, although the Flame is flashing like no tomorrow. He is the King of the tank, at least that's what he thinks he is.

I would've held off on the sixline since it can be aggressive towards other wrasses with the same body shape. Try some flasher if you like but be warned that wrasse are super addictive and once you start man oh man its hard to stop.

Hmmm. I noticed that six lines can be aggressive, mine likes to nip at the two firefish I have at times. Do they get along with not-wrasse a bit better? I was planning on getting a pair of black/white clowns and a flame angel eventually but am seriously considering more wrasses instead.

Does your firefish even come out with the sixline roaming around? Dwarf angel and clowns are tough little fishes so I wouldn't be worried about them. Do some research before you add any other wrasses but I can tell you they are one of my favorite fish.

The firefish come out in the evening when the lights are on and are more apparent when feeding. That being said though, when the firefish are out the sixline can be a bit aggressive at time.

Get rid of the 6 line if its aggressive already if you want to add flasher/fairy wrasses. If you do a search, you'll read a lot of stories from members whose 6 lines harassed small, docile fish (often to death).

my sixline whos fullgrown killed the last 3 fish i added to my tank almost instantly:( ill never buy one again
that said my black leopard and him are now best friends the good thing about wrasses is they have the option to hide in the sand if stuff goes downhill, mine did just that to get away from the sixline, he would come out for a minute get harrassed then hide and repeat the process after 2 weeks they are the best of buds hunting side by side....weird and trust me this is n ot like my sixline he usually cares for no one lol
that said i just added a blue spot leopard to the fragtank, i gotta say im loving these guys and am getting addicted lol:)

I have a McCosker Flasher (love him!). I got a six line (well my boyfriend did much to my hesitation and reservations) several months after. He was great at first. Lately I noticed my McCosker cowering a bit from the six line, I think a bit of bullying (all of the other fish are fine). My solution? Add more live rock with TONS of hiding spaces. Seems to have helped significantly, now they have their own territories.
Check out the picture I took of my McCosker!

I was told it was a Nahacky's wrasse but not sure if it is. If you know please let me know.
I would say male Nahacky. I'm by far no expert but from what I've seen in person and on the net the Hooded is a darker red and the dorsal fin is also more red(Nahacky more yellow). They are soooo similar though that it's so difficult to say for sure.
Maybe this will help a little

Looks like it to me. Depending on when you got it, this could be him at the collecting station...

My new addition, blue sided fairy wrasse. I did get another wrasse but can't get a good photo.

I bought those same wrasses recently too. Weird. Western LFSs maybe have the same supply source...
