Beautiful picture. I love these fish. Too bad I don't have the courage to attempt keeping one alive.

You have my vote already! LOL.

Thanks, ya they're a tricky fish. One I got lucky with and I had it for 4 years. I wasn't going to try another one but the one I have now came from someone who had it for almost a year and was shutting down his tank.

Some great photos so far! Here's one of mine. This is a Chaetodon ulietensis or double saddleback butterfly. Originally purchased to help keep majano under control, which all disappeared within a few weeks, and then aiptasia. Unfortunately after that he developed a taste for more expensive things so he now lives ina FOWLR. Had him about 2 years now I think. He can help dispel the myth that butterflyfish are peaceful fish, he is the king of his tank and lets the others know.

Thanks man, haha it's one of about 100 attempts. I had to switch cameras too, the first one I used just utterly spooked him, not sure what was up with that, I think he was seeing the focus beam or something.

Nice pic Tony. I can confirm that fish is one aggressive and pushy little SOB. Trying to hand-feed the eel was fun with that bully nailing the shrimp.

Can I ask the people with Copperbands what you find them eating mostly in your tanks? Flake/Pellet/Cyclopeeze/Frozen, etc?

I started my Copperbands on frozen PE Mysis, then a few pieces of cut fresh clam. Later I converted them over to freeze dried Mysis and Plankton, which is mostly what is eaten today. Have not been able to get them to eat flake or pellets. They will take it in their mouths to try, but spit it right out. I also have Pearlscale ButterFly fish that eat pretty well anything, incl pellets and flakes. Started them on frozen PE Mysis, too, though. But the real good news is that they all eat aiptasia.

I might change my upload in that case , why has no one else uploaded photos beside Tony and I?

I have a feeling that & the lack of sticky might be hindering the success of POTM. Uploading downgrades the quality of the photo, would be nice to see POTM back to it's old form.

I feed mine small bits of food 3 or 4 times a day. He only gets a few bites each time, as the other fish clean up the food very quickly. That's why I feed more often.

It doesn't give me the option to upload to the Dec 2011 POTM and I can only see the photo Tony has submitted. Maybe my grouping is off? Is this just me?

Thanks, the tang in the background is a Blonde Nasso (Nasso elegans). The Bariene is a beautiful tang, just don't see too many of them around.

????? A tang ???? How do you figure that? They are very simular to Heniochus which is a type of butterfly, however they are not actually related. Moorish Idols are related to Eozanclus brevirhostris.

Pic of a Heniochus acuminatus which is considered the "Poor Man's Moorish Idol".
http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ButterflyPIX/HeniochusPIX/H.%20acuminatus%20FJ%20(1)MD.JPG

Quote from Wikipedia

"The moorish idol, Zanclus cornutus ("Crowned Scythe"), is a small marine fish species, the sole extant representative of the family Zanclidae (from the Greek zagkios, "oblique") in order Perciform. A common inhabitant of tropical to subtropical reefs and lagoons, the moorish idol is notable for its wide distribution throughout the Indo-Pacific. A number of butterflyfishes (genus Heniochus) closely resemble the moorish idol. It is closely related to, if not a direct descendant of the extinct Eozanclus brevirhostris, from the Middle Eocene of Monte Bolca."

Just to put it out there, totally fist pumped there! I read the tang statement and I was like "Whoa?!?" I will have to look into this when I get home from work. But you did it for me! Thanks!

"Identification: The Moorish Idol is not an Angelfish, nor a Butterflyfish, but rather a close relative of the Acanthruidae or Surgeonfish family. A one-of-a-kind Zanclidae family member, this fish is also often misidentified as a Pennant or Bannerfish, which are actually species of the Heniochus genus that are commonly referred to as the "False" or "Poor Man's" Moorish Idol."

http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/tangsurgeonfishprofiles/p/p_moorishidol.htm

Tangs are Surgeonfish

silentcivilian
12-22-2011, 02:08 AM
What have we learned here today. I was wrong, my bad!

Verdict: Not a butterfly, also the Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus) is a small perciform marine fish, the sole representative of the family Zanclidae. So not a tang//surgeonfish for various reasons including its lack of spine on its tail, which defines sugeronfish or Acanthuridae ("thorn tail").

So, back to topic. Did you at least enjoy my photo? I thought it was pretty.

Heres my unoriginal entry. 3 years old. Eats mysis three times a day, bristle worms, feather dusters, spaghetti worms, aptasia, grocery store and tridacna clam, pterogorgia, acanthastrea, trachyphyllia, lobophyllia, catalaphyllia, and fungia. Fortunately it has only killed one coral.
