The fixture that came with our 10g kit currently has two household daylight compact fluorescent bulbs.

We're in the process of considering building a custom hood and want to look at used LED systems that could better illuminate this standard 10g. Husband doesn't have time to build a DIY system so if you have anything that might be of interest to us, please PM me.

I'm hoping to put a BTA in this tank at some point. Can't spend more than $160 on the extra lighting, though.

Suggestions are welcome :) Located in N. Edmonton.

check out the marineland reef LED's or doubles's

PetSmart carries them

should be under $160

Thanks for the suggestion. Not sure if the Marineland is the right product. J&L has a sale on some of their LEDs, though they only come in 24" which is too large for my 10g.

Was also considering going with 20w Coralife 50/50 Minis, which is a cheaper alternative, even if we go with four bulbs at about $12 each. Hardware can be purchased at Rona. Anybody used them on their nanos?

Hi Lapdog,

Thanks for the PM.

We decided to go the CF route and dear husband is right now putting together some of the wiring. He built version I of the hood last night so we have a better idea of what has to be done to satisfy our (inexpensive) needs/wants. Will post photos of it once we're finished :)

I use these lamps over my quarantine tanks. I wouldn't suggest them for a coral tank, but they do have a decent look for a fish only tank. Definitely not enough light for a BTA.

Look at boostLED par38 about $70 bucks a bulb and each bulb has 5x3watt LEDs. I run it on a 8g biocube and grow everything from zoas, Lps like frogs awns and blastos and even a lil rainbow Monti. Has great color options and you can run it from a desk lamp. I have pics if want to see

We went hog-wild (on our quite tight budget) on lighting this weekend. Dear husband made a quick and dirty hood so we could see the lighting in action before committing to more bulbs.

We now have 150w (incandescent equivalent) on our 10g:

- 4 x Aqueaon 50/50 10w CF (each equivalent to 25w incandescent)
- 2 x Globe LED MAX 5000k 4w household bulbs from Rona (bought for 15% off yesterday , each equivalent to 25w incandescent)

The light colour is not as blue as I'd like, but the white is quite cool. Will be starting a tank journal I suspect where I can post videos :)

Sheesh! We're still waffling about going LED.

Has anyone built this 12 LED kit (http://www.modularled.ca/12-led-kit/), and if so, what are your reviews? How well will it light a 10g and how well will it pop the colours of zoas in you opinions?

TIA :)
