unless you wear a suit to work...lol
I couldnt do half the marketing I do now without BBM.
BB is currently entrenched in the business world and that is probably their one and only saving grace.
I know in my world, if you walk into a boardroom with an iphone or android, no one takes you too seriously and so much gets done over bbm its crazy.
still, I admit iphone or androids make better toys than a bb.

Our boardroom has people with both :) The company supported BB and their personal smart phone.

K, here is my 2 cents:
I have always been a BB guy, it was a great phone, good quality, and for me for business there was no other.
However.... Over the past year I have had several issues, down-times (from blackberry issues), so not always getting my texts or emails. But Phone always worked flawlessly
Last Straw... The BIG downtime of 2 weeks ago. It was so bad, that my phone kept locking up trying to do the text/email processes. I would go to use the phone and it would be a white screen of death. I would put it down and let it sit, and eventually it came back, but took about 5 minutes each time.
So I abondanded the BB. Looked at the Android, as I am tech guy, and they are good. But went with the IPhone 4s, because it was brand new and Apple has a market share on phones, so thought go with another big name.
By no means am I an apple promotor, but I will say this IPhone 4s is so much more. It absolutely out performs the Blackberry BOLD 9700 I had.

Cuz apparently you need a better gaming lap top or you got a great deal on your Alienware lap top.

My wife owns the iPhone 3G and she recently upgraded to a iPhone 4S. It was the only phone that either of us has owned over the last 10 years that lasted the full 3 years of the contract. It was clearly built to last.
The only blackberry either of us owned died 1 week after the warranty expired and Rogers wouldn't do anything for me over the phone or going into the store. Complete crap.

um.. that sounds like there was a problem with your phone its self.. all the outage for 1 day in canada did was delay e-mails and BBM's. mine wasn't working properly for all of 4 hours but the phone and internet worked perfectly the whole time as these are not routed through there secure server like e-mail and BBM are.

The case on the back of my 3GS cracked right up the middle starting from the docking port. This is just from putting into and taking it out of the docking station.
Booo.
I can repair it myself though with $50 of parts bought online.
On the other hand, I still think the BB Curve I had at my last job was the best phone I've ever had.

Couldn't resist getting in on the pointless debate!
I have to say that unless you're in the military, iPhone is the way to go. Andorid and iOS are so much easier to navigate, and iOS4+ (notice that I didn't include android) has 95% of the security and manageability features that BB OS does. PLUS iOS natively plays nice with Exchange activesync whereas you need BES server to manage e-mail and security in ADDITION to exchange when using BB in the enterprise.
I have an iPhone 4 (personal) and a BB Bold 9780 (work). I also work with the BB Torch and Bold 9900. While they will do a lot of the things that iPhone (and android) will do, BB OS is just more clumsy and not nearly as polished. If you're a consumer, android is great as an alternative to iOS, but in my opinion it does not belong in the work place for security and manageability reasons. For the consumer, I have yet to see an android phone that will match the iPhone 4 or 4s in terms of features AND battery life. For me iPhone is still number one (though my mom just got a Samsung Galaxy Gio from Virgin that is killer value at $150, android 2.3 if I recall).

lastlight
10-28-2011, 06:05 PM
But that cheap plastic toy *is* less likely to break if you drop it I think. My iPhone4 fell out of my pocket as I exited my car. Fell maybe 2 feet and entire back shattered. A phone made of glass... GENIOUS! To Apple's credit they did replace the glass for free. Guess there's a price to pay for sexy. Can't use acrylic because the people will complain about scratches lol.

Nopers, being techy I thought of that... I emptied the phone of data, reinstalled the O/S, just to make sure it wasn't the phone. Did this actually a couple times. After doing that I was worse off, as I couldn't register it on the Blackberry network, as it was down. So email, texts were really not working (but didn't matter as BB was still down), but still phone was having issues hanging.
But, the hanging went away, once Blackberry came back up. Once they got things kinda running, phone worked 100% for the couple days later, until I got the new IPhone 4S.
Don't get me wrong, BB has great phone quality, and the build of the hardware is great. But I rely on this phone for business, any missed email or calls, means missed revenue or potential. I never liked the fact that there is a third party involved, being BB servers... And this major outage was the last straw. BB has shown the world that they need to rework their network, as I forsee they will now do. A piece of hardware on the other side of the world took Canada/US down also, all because 1.) their backup infrastructure was inferior 2.) their aging network cannot handle the traffic, or unforseen excess due to issues.
I for one am a IPhone guy now. And I LIKE IT!!! Oh yeah, I also kiss girls.... AND I LIKE IT!!!! Sorry, now I am singing

depends which case you get, they make several different models for each phone... Mine is very slim, doesn't make the phone that much bigger, but it is a superior case.
I don't care about sexy, I care that it works... And I will eventually drop it, so in my case, this case is worth it.

me to. if I miss a call from work it would cost me over 1000.00 bucks for lost work and penilities.. thats why I have the blackberry. I am not saying the iphone or the android phones wont work just as good for me, I am just going by my track record with BBerrys. this is my third and I have never had a hardware issue with any of them.. thats 7 years of problem free phones. as for outages there has been two in the last two years that were more than 30 min, and they only affected e-mail and BBM. this last one my BBM was laging by 15 min, and e-mail was about 4 hours behind but that wasn't an issue for me as it is the phone I depend on for work.
I have had a cell for 20 years now.. and the BBerries were the first ones that didn't need to be replaced for hardware issues.
now I haven't tried iphone, except for playing with my kids and I thought nice toy, but the phone wasn't as good as my storm or my torch. sure it had what 10X the apps available, but look at the apps on 99% of the iphones most are useless amusment things. yes there are some cool things, I do like the slide to unlock on the iphone and now there is a app for BBerry that adds that feature. I don't use my phone for music and if I did I wouldn't use the iphone because I hate how pushy and restrictive the ituens is. when they make them so you can slide mp3's over like a hard drive transfer instead of through propriatary software then I would concider it. so realy a i-phone is for some one who wants toys over a phone, and theres nothing wrong with that. its a personal choice. I chose to use a seperate MP3 player instead of my phone, I chose to play games on my x-box or wii instead of my phone. sure I have a crib and a poker game on there for when I am stitting in a air port and I don't want to start my laptop up, but all my other apps are utilities like a scientific calculator ect......
as for the android setup.. every one I know who has got one has loved it, what I don't like about them is the amount of different configurations.. android is an operating system and nothing more.. so every phone maker has jumped on the bandwagon and made android compatable phones.. but some are better than others some do this but not that... so which one does one get?
I think the ideal phone would be if google would buy out RIM while the stocks are still low and make there own phone this would give them the most secure e-mail and msg combine with one of the most adapatable operating systems..
what BBerry lacks is one thing. hardware wise they are probably the best phone on the market but there isn't enough forward thinking in the design and concept section of the company. they need a young visionary to dream up new ideas for there phone instead of playing catchup all the time.

It doesn't cost me anything. I do a hardware upgrade and get thee new iPhone for 200 dollars and extend my contract by an editional year. Then sell my old iPhone on kijiji to cover the cost of the new one.

On a side note, wanted to give my wife my old headset, so she doesn't get any distracted driving tickets. So I went to Future Shop to get me a new one today. Left with the Motorala Roadster Hands free unit.
Very cool... It clips onto your visor, it of course is a hands free unit using bluetooth, but can also transmit FM into the vehicle stereo. Works very well. It can also play my IPhone music if I wish, using bluetooth to transmit from phone to handsfree, then fm to the vehicle stereo. Works well, not 100% audiophile sound, but not bad.
It can also read texts, emails, etc using Motospeak app for BB and Andriod devices, this app isn't available for Iphone, but with the 4s I have, Siri does all this and more.
So I recommend this to anyone looking for a bluetooth device, so they can talk on the phone, while driving without worry of a ticket.

ya thats what I did to go from my storm to my torch, but the upgrade for tellus in the smart phones is 20 bucks / month, so that would be 480.00 for a two year early upgrade. plus you just get the 3 year rate on the phone so that would be 580.00 to upgrade after one year on a 3 year plan.

I love my iPhone, I HATE apple.
I had a 3G, my first phone to last a full contract in 12 years. It was beaten, abused and teethed on by 2 babies. It survived. I"m a very technical person, and played with lots of other phones... but my iPhone just works. I use it way too much, i'm the guy you see sitting there giggling at his phone while life goes on around me. It's never failed me. And i'm yet to find something i wish my phone did, that others can do. after 3 years my 3G still held a charge for 2 days even with my extensive use, and most BB/Galaxy's can't do that from the start, so a replaceable battery seemed useless to me. The reason i got rid of the 3G? my contract was up and it was my birthday... so... 4G!. my Wife now uses the 3G.
As for dropping and stuff, my 3G had a simple rubber case (not an otter case, i have that on my 4g though). It has dropped from a 2nd story window to a wood deck, fell in the toilet, my toddler's thrown the thing arcoss the room more than once, chewed on by him as a baby, and now his younger brother (there's apps for that... lol). And I've dropped it from sitting an unknown amount of times, I've become a very fidgety person since quitting smoking last year, so it tend to drop things lots while playing with them. No screen protector and only one fine scratch on the screen that you can only see in a reflection while it is a black screen.
And for the otter case, get the otter commuter, it's small. the otter outdoor one is massive. I have the commuter on my 4G and so far like it.

ya tellus you can do a paid upgrade at any time but it goes like this.
you take the discount you recived so if you got a 599 buck phone for 99 with a 3 year deal and you have 24 months left on the contract you have to pay 333 bucks plus the new 3 year contract price of the new phone.
so this is what it would cost me to upgrade now. after 30 months they wave the upgrade fee. this used to be 24 months for a free upgrade.
its actualy more expensive to upgrade a Iphone as they are 200 bucks more than anything else to start.

I bought an iPhone on a whim because it felt like a nice product and I didn't have to do any research. Selection paralysis at the vendor had me pretty flustered.
"so what's the difference between the X5r42, the galaxy supernova, the blackberry flamethrowing STRGTX and the 4Gstt from whoever?"
"oh, this one has more ram but that one has a better touch screen, some people like the color options of the Sony Xperia better."
"isn't there one with better ram and touch screen?"
"yup, next month, there's a new phone from company x with all of those features"
"... wtf, why wouldn't they just release one uber phone with ALL the best features and call it a day?"
"these phones are all good."
"... Thanks for answering my question. How many models does the iPhone come in?"
"two"
"what's the diff?"
"one's 8 GB and the other is 16GB"
"do you have either in stock?"
"I only have the 16 GB"
"okay, good, I'll take that"
So yeah, problem solved.

Well I must add my 2 cent just because I can.
I bought a 3GS about a yr ago, it was great for a few months then.........BAM........SIGNAL LOSS.....DROPPED CALLS......NOT RINGING AT ALL.
Anyways I was really getting sick of this whole situation so I finally decided to get a new phone & when the 4S came out I said what the hell....only because I know an owner of a Telus dealer I went to see him. Well after about an hour later & a few well placed calls by my friend I walked out with not 1 but 2 IPhone 4S for under $150.
So after a about a week now I am very happy with my new phone, no more lost signal, dropped calls or missed calls ( unless I want to miss them ) every other phone that has been in my house drops down to one bar in the basement and shop except mine, full bars and kickin a$$. Best phone I have ever owned, also have an otter box on it as its a necessity.

My first two BB's were a heap of junk, but the 3rd one after getting replaced was dropped about 1-2 times PER DAY... sometimes from 3-4feet. Sometimes just an inch or two. It took a year before I actually cracked the screen. You guys would have been impressed at the scratch/wear marks. The phone still worked after that... but it still had all the problems that occured before I started dropping it. (Im much more careful with my Iphone4... only dropped it once 2 feet so far in 2 months).

No for real though iv had nothing but problems with BB for years now and will never buy another BB. I'm currently sitting on the fence and despite people claiming androids are better I see absolutely no difference in the two phones. It's apples vs oranges no pun intended

BB for business? iPhone for play? I don't understand that argument.
I've done a tonne of business (running conferences and talking to almost 100 vendors) through my iPhone. No problems, easy to communicated etc.. I have NEVER had a situation where I couldn't do "business" on the phone.
Truth is - people are attached to their phones
BB users (like the BB corporation) is unfortunately "OLD SCHOOL THINKING" and is losing marketshare RAPIDLY!
iPhone and Android phones are #1 & #2 in the world and RIM is falling fast.
Google will NOT buy BB unless there is some intellectual property they want. Not because it is a good brand. They (google) already own Motorola Mobility so they don't need much more. (although every time google sneezes they spit out 10 BB companies in $ value).
I use my iPhone for business and storing music/podcasts. I can edit documents (in a pinch... screen is a bit small... but good for emergencies), read PDFs and do everything I need to do.

for us, it's security. Smart phones don't securely connect to our servers, so policy says nothing but BB. The company pays for the BB, not smart phones, so that's a lot of Blackberries (we have close to half a million employees)

Best thing I like about the iphone 4s is the ability to have talk to text.

BBerrys are also the only cell phone that can be used in an oficial capacity by our military.

I have a blackberry bold 9700 and have no issues with it, i work construction and I have been outside all week in the -10 weather with the phone clipped to my safety vest exposed to the cold for 10+ hours a day No problems with anything.
My BB went down for about a day no big deal since the internet browser still worked so I could check emails that way. I bought it because I want a good quality phone all around not a toy, and the blackberry has the best talk quality out of all the phones. for me its blackberry all the way. Not to say I dont own an Ipod Touch, macbook pro and a spare droid phone I just prefer the blackberry all around.
Cuz apparently you need a better gaming lap top or you got a great deal on your Alienware lap top.
IPhone 4S w/ 32GB = $749
A Top 10 Ultraportable Gaming Laptop = $750

The point is $750 is a lot for a phone albeit a smartphone. Understandably, early adoption of cutting edge technology is always expensive. A lot people told me that they don't know what they would do without thier iphone. I reply that I don't know what I would do WITH an iphone (given that I am not paying more than $20/mo for my mobile plan). :)

Must be some weird thing with your VPN. I don't seem to have trouble with my work or home VPN.

Well here goes, was changing my sump out a few weeks ago and had my iPhone 3GS in the front pocket of my hoody, bad idea. Straight to the bottom it went. set skimmer down as quick as I could and retrieved the phone from about 10" of water. Panicking at this point I ran up stairs and turned the hair dryer on cool n low and layed them both on the counter for about 30 minutes or so...believe it or not phone works fine, no way I could go with anything else after that.

Right here, and the reason for this is because I have been screwed over so many times with the providers its not even funny. Every provider will tell you straight up they don't support the hardware only the service. So if your phone can still receive the network signal and dial out they don't care. Last time I had a phone act up the guy on the phone told me straight up "Your phone can still send and receive calls sir so we don't care if the touch-pad doesn't work that's not our problem". They suck you in with contracts and extended warranties but when the hardware dies they push you around the ring 100 times before someone finally tells you they will replace the phone for the same price as a new one. I find it easier to just pay the price of the phone outright then if it breaks you at least know your screwed right away rather than having screaming matches over the phone with a provider asking for repairs.

you're one of those people that keeps their phone longer than 1 year then?
i just get a new phone every year and with it comes a 1 year warranty from apple... which replaces the phone if it breaks

Most providers don't allow free upgrades for 30 months, so the average retail customer isn't going to be able to do this..
