I'm building my own frag that is 17" by 17" and 10" to 12" deep. I would like some ideas on how to light the tank. The frags will be sps, lps and maybe a clam or two.

LED  I have a similar sized tank. 20x20x10 I have a 24 vertex illumina 200 led fixture but a 12 would do even a radion or aqua illumination. It works great for frags you can turn it to 10 K ish to get growth then back to 20K for colours. Gives you a ton of options.

DIY LED...you could do a little tank like that with more light than you know what to do with through a kit like this: http://www.rapidled.com/servlet/the-200/Biocube-14-Dimmable-Retrofit/Detail
Made to go inside a Biocube...but easy to just hang above the tank in any way you feel will work.

I have a 16.5 inch sunpod (70W HQI and 8X LED) that would work perfectly for you for this.

150$

With the included legs, it can go on up to a 20" tank.

LED for sure.

If you want to save a few bucks, either go the DIY route already suggested, or pick up a light from ebay.

Or search for reef lighting on ebay.

If you're not on that much of a budget, go for an Aqua Illuminations... they're about $400 if I remember correctly.

Another option that would work well would be the eshine 60w PRO LED's.
If you order direct from the manufacturer should run around 250.00.
