I was told about maxi mini's a week ago and I ended up getting one. Very cool smaller 2-6 inches anemones.

Some info on them

Here's mine

" they are favoured by Sexy Shrimps..." LOL

Shamed that they don't host clowns. My long tentacle anemone is getting huge. I'd like to exchange him for a smaller anemone for them.

Would really like to see colors like those in the pictures (orange, red, purple, yellow) in the LFS.

Not good. Another animal to obsess over. And you can't have just one, either, like Dawn said.

Here's mine. It's blue with a pink mouth and base, has a green skirt and the tips of all the tentacles are pink. It hosts a white porcelain anemone crab. I really do need a couple/few more nicely coloured ones but must wait for now.

Thanks for the link, I picked one up too, couldn't decide with one with the red in it or the green one that sort of looked like a ric, but I went with a red one like yours.

Love your Blue one, too, Dawn.
Boy, you girls take awesome pictures!
Maybe we need to have a lesson from you two for one of our up-coming Reefer's Meeting?? Along with Steve's Fragging workshop.

So did you have to purchase your crab along with the anemone, or did your existing crab find it in the tank?
I would love to have one of these and introduce some Sexy Shrimps along with it, but am terrified that one of my resident fishes would think that I am treating them with tasty snacks!

Lol, it'a called an expensive DSLR "point and shoot" that you have no idea how to fully use

I had the nem for quite a while before the crab. I brought the crab home and after acclimation I put it in a small net and I released it where the nem was and it was love at first site, the crab hasn't moved an inch from the nem since  I haven't had the mis-fortune of loosing any fish to it thank goodness but yes they can eat small fish. It's usually the "clumsy, not too bright" fish who end up as food. All my fish seem to know to stay away from it.

I have bougth six over the last year in some nice colours. I myself can not keep them from bleaching in my tank. No matter where I put them. Medium light, low light, in a cave they all bleach. Even in my frag tank under t5's. It really upsets me I can't keep these unbleached because they are so colourfull and they stay in one spot close to where you place them.

How long did you have them before they bleached? I've had mine for almost a week it's under T5's about 2 feet away from the light but the bulbs are old and I was meaning to replace them soon. However I don't want to bleach my maxi mini

They all starting bleaching around the two week mark for me. There are alot of people that have had success with these. Just keep in mind they are a low light anemone. In my main tank they were under 14K 250W halides.

It's possible . I still have 5 . I did loose one to a power head. when I first got them. There are three in my frag tank and two in my main tank in the shade . None of them have shown any hint of there colour comming back.

Interesting. Mine was at the bottom of the tank when I had my old metal halide 14 plusright but then I replaced that with a Phoenix 14k brand new and it moved right underneat the MH. Go figure, I guess Phoenix bulbs are not that strong, and even my maxi mini agree.

Now it's pretty close to the metal halide and seem happy. It also changed color as it was light pink when I got it and now it's much darker in color. I think it was a bit bleached before. I would not call mine low light though.

How can you have them all bleaching? do you have any trace of copper or something maybe in your water? What is your salinity and how are you testing it?

They do move and quite a bit if the light is not suitable for them.

That's interesting. I thought maybe mine had bleached because I had added NP pellets to the tank a few weeks before, but now that casts doubt on that it having anything to do with the pellets.

Mine, after about 8 months in my tank, went from looking like the first one pictured by jorjef at the top of page 6, to looking like the first one pictured by jorjef at the bottom of page 6. This happened in a space of about 2 weeks. It eats fine and does not move from its spot. I will try to post some before/after pictures later when I get chance.

Jorjef are those the same anemones? You say some of them are new so I'm not sure if that one in particular is new as well.

Jorjef are those the same anemones? You say some of them are new so I'm not sure if that one in particular is new as well.

There are two groups of pictures, one set has five carpets and the second has two pics. with a total of four carpets. The four are the newest ones I've picked up. I have nine in total. All have either the original color some have intensified, the brown one was shipped to meet sight unseen and arrived that color

Delphinus
11-21-2011, 07:07 PM
Where are you finding them with such variation by the way? All the ones I see up around here all have the exact same colour/patterns.

I actually meant the first picture of each grouping, sorry if that didn't come out right. Specifically these two pictures:

This one:
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd32/jorjef/carpet003.jpg
(Mine started off looking like this)

And this one:
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd32/jorjef/utf-8BSU1HLTIwMTExMTE4LTAwMjY2LmpwZw.jpg
(which mine now looks like as of two weeks ago)

I was curious if these two pictures are of the same anemone or two different ones?

jorjef
11-21-2011, 07:22 PM
The first pic was my very first one and was bought locally in Regina. The second I bought from Kelly at the Reef Shoppe a week or two ago, so no they are different. Kelly has pretty good luck in getting a good variety of colors and patterns. I bought some of the others from Bayside in Saskatoon. The newest four were two from the Reef Shoppe, two from Bayside.

daniella3d

Also in case that some people here don't know about it, they are extremely easy to frag. Simply cut them in half or in 4 part with a sharp razor blade or a scalpel and they will heal in a few weeks and you'll have 2 or 4 of them.

I never dare do this to mine though, but they are supposed to be very hardy and heal well.

Sorry didn't see this post. It took about 2-3 weeks for all mine to bleach. They all were placed on the end of my rock work in a shaded area under 250w de bulbs. I also put a few in my frag tank under T5's also in a shded area. All have bleached on me and have never moved more then a inch from where I placed them. Laurie, you have them on your rocks, did you have to physically move them there, or did they just moved themselves??
Mine just burrowed into my sand bed and stayed. Not a problem, but the sand-sifting goby has been sifting sand into them, and I can't always be avail to blow the sand off.
They don't seem to inflate or do anything to "shake" off the sand, either...so don't really know if that's really bothering them, or just me:sad:??

Anyone else have this problem??

Mine have come from Blue World and Big Al's. I know last time I was in at Red Coral Steve had some nice little ones.

Laurie, I like the two orange ones, I don't have any that colour yet......I need to go shopping:mrgreen:

From what I understand they don't come in as many vibrant colour variations as the maxi's do.

2 orange? Pic #5 is a pale orange that has whiteish green and little purple ring around the edge and the one in the second and 3rd pic is a blood red colour with white and green around the edge. At least in person that's what they look like. I'll try to get some better detailed underwater pic.'s

Oh, it looks like a dark "burnt" orange colour in the pic(or maybe it's my monitor). If it's red that makes it even nicer

No new pics, just a story. I had my wife pic up one when I was out of town, I had her put it in a small plastic basket and attach the basket to the side of the tank with the mag float. Long story short he went for a walk over night which isn't very surprising but I thought he should be easy to find. That was two and a half weeks ago and it's wasn't until yesterday I finally found him. What is weird is he decided to travel about three feet across the tank passing by many spots he could have set up shop, tons on rock etc. but he decided that a good spot to be was right beside three other Maxi mini's on a rock sitting out on it's own...nice choice lol. It was like the other three were calling him " come join us, come join us!!"

So a strange thing happened over the past few days, two of my maxi minis (the ones pictured above) both split. I had thought that it was unusual for them to split on their own and that to get them to split the needed to be sliced in half :noidea: Anyone have one split on it's own before? Maybe they had help from my blue line trigger? Any thoughts/ideas?

Edit: just re-read though the coral magazine link about maxi minis and they do split on their own.

Just seemed odd that two of them split a day apart from each other. They were different sizes when I bought them and I got them a couple of months apart as well.

They just split and need to recover first, but I will be selling them once they've healed. You might have to fight Dawn off though as I know she also said she'd be interested if they split, however that was a few months ago so I'm not sure if she's still interested or not.

I actually lost this one to a power head last month  I do have another one that looks more like Laurie's pinkish one that split.

Here's my newest beauty that followed me home today. It's such a deep dark purple that it almost looks black. I've been wanting this colour variation for quite a long time now......and to think I almost didn't stop at BA's today to check it out

Me too!!!!! The main part of the orange one stayed where it was but the smaller split part is MIA. The real annoying one is the reddish purple green one. It was the 1st one I ever got and it never moved until it split, can't find the smaller part of it but the larger part reappeared just under my elephant ear mushrooms :twised:
