Hey all,

What eats coraline algae other than urchins? I want to reduce mine, just wondering if anything else eats this stuff.

I've read that asterina stars do, but I don't notice that mine actually eat it.

chitons and urchins can't think of any other creatures that go for coraline algae but if there're other soft fleshy algal matters in your tanks coraline algae would come second best. clipped on nori sheets so often those chitons and urchins simply ignore coralines in my tanks.

I just looked up what a chiton was. Wow! they look like trilobites. Anybody ever used these? If so, where can one get some?

There was one at J&L about a week ago. Not listed anymore though .. might be worth shooting off an email to them plus the usual local suspects too although I can't say that's ever worked for me (best way to ensure something never comes in is to ask for it.. at least in my universe :p )

had some chiton hitchhikers, never noticed them eating the coraline. If they were, wasn't to the bare rock like urchins.

There is some reef safe parrot fish. My LFS (raging reef) had a few of them in his SPS tank and they were constantly eating coralline algae.

I have tons of them in my tank, but they only seem to eat the coralline off the glass. They stay small (I've not seen one bigger than 6mm) and are pink, purple or white.

If you want I can send you some - although it's a long trip for some hitch hikers :D

i wouldn't mind in getting some lol, its a pain in the but to scrape the back panel of the tank lol.

They like to eat all the coralline off the acrylic overflow - I think it has a harder time growing onto it, and consequently it's easier pickings for the chitons.

The back glass they only scrape parts here and there.
