I've had a small open brain for 5 months now... and it's been doing pretty well, but in the last few months I've noticed at night it seems the inner section gets really large and almost dominates the brain at night when the lights are off and polyp-like extensions come out and the brain gets very spongy... it's just a pretty excessive transformation.. just wondering if this is totally normal

Yeah Deb's right JT, those are the brains feeder tentacles., and yes they mostly feed at night. I place a dime size chunk of food in mine once a week to keep it happy. My brain only feeds in this way when it's hungry, yet my donut does this every night even if it's not hungry

Here's my donut doing the same thing

While the brain definitely feeds at night, you can also target feed with the rest of your stock.

I turkey baste mine once every three days or so with brine or mysis. If it's hungry, then generally the smaller tenticles will be sticky and hold the shrimp and forward it to it's mouth(s).
