100 for a mantis is alot IMO.
I bought mine at Island Pets here for 39.99 and he was at least 6"...

Most LFS get them in as pests and then put them up for sale as a bonus.
Some LFS will actually order them in, this is where you get overcharged though and likely what happened if you paid 100 for one.

Check around this site, you'll see high quality live rock for 3/4$ a pound here.

I would bet you could get 300 for your setup, as long as the tank is in good shape and all the lighting and fans still function.

peacock mantids got for $100 plus in calgary because of supply and demand, the smaller species sure go for lower, picies sells then usually for 110-120$ big als 100$ some of the smaller stores have had them but there never in as good condition

For $100 it better be a spectacular mantis. 30 lbs of live rock is about $100-$120 if it's free of algae and aiptasia and of good quality. Significantly less if it's got pests or doesn't look like premium pieces.

I would agree with Gobytron - $300 all in or say $250 without the shrimp and it would sell reasonably quickly. You can try holding out for more, depends on how quickly you want to get rid of it

Just set up a thread looking for live rock in your area, usually you will get a few quick responses and it's a lot cheaper buying from fellow members than going to a store.

I know Pisces likes to sell the Mantis at 90-120 depending on the colour but a few other stores here in town I have seen them as cheap as $35 and in great condition and good colouring. Most people Consider a Mantis a pest to start with but some people do keep these alone so I wouldn't expect to get much more than $40 for yours even for its size.

You all realize he is talking about a 6" peacock mantis here, for sale in Calgary?

If there are 6" peacocks going for $40, I'd love to know where.

It says right on the post, to check around THIS SITE for 3/4$ lb LR.
not at any LFS.

Why buy from a LFS when you can get better rock cheaper here.

I sell LR for 3.50/lb often.

I hate to say it guys, but it sounds like a rip off paying around 100$ for a mantis.

I bought mine for under 40 from Big Als...though now its island pets...at the time, JL had some for 90,but they never sold until deeply discounted.

Again, the difference as explained to me by staff was that when you specifically order in a mantis, they cost the LFS more so they charge more.

Usually though, with all the LR imported by a LFS, they get the odd hitchhiker...these gor for 20-40$ IME.

That's good to know, as anytime I have checked with places, they're $40 at least for a small one. But Oceans didn't have one last time I checked.

Thanks. :)
