i just ordered a 101g Long tank, 72x18x18 so now im designing a sump/refug

im thinking 48x14x14 should fit nice underneath

the refugium area is roughly 20g

have you picked a skimmer? whats its foot print? I only have a 20 long sump for my 45 build and the skimmer section is a foot long and it barely fits the skimmer (SWC 150 BMK) and its a compact in sump skimmer.

i can't reminder where i came across this design but it has work very for a few customers of ours
http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad223/conceptaquariums/sumptest2.jpg

it incorporates a refugium on one side and filter socks and pump return on the other end. you will have to adjust the chamber sizes to fit the equipment you chose.

what return pump are you using

are you running any reactors off the return pump?

what is the return pump gph rating after head loss?

i would recommend an eheim 1262 or ATB flowstar 1500 given your system volume - you can throttle them back with a gate valve if the flow is too much. Go with a Bean animal overflow system - this will require three holes for the overflow and two for the return. 1" should be good if you go with the bean animal - it allows for redundancy and is dead silent. 3/4" for the return should be good but if you check the pump specs it will tell you what the exit size fitting size is - if its one inch just use an adaptor to bring it down to 3/4 so you dont have giant return nozzles in your tank.

sorry, but to much on our plates right now  but we have made two changes to this setup as we played with this design. the return chamber need to be enlarge to hold a large volume of water to allow for more evaporation and number two the filter sock tray need to be reverse from the drain chamber to allow easier access to pulling out the tray

If your still looking for sump designs.....I just built a pretty simple one and was surprised just how easy it was. Mine is 36l x 18w x 16t (basicly a 44 gal breeder).

You sure can't beet the price of making one your self....had the glass shop cut all my pieces to size ($40 bucks) and picked up a tube of 100% pure silicone from Crappy Tube ($5 bucks)

Here are a few shots....hope they help

You have to go in and ask if they have any off cuts that you can buy.....told them I didn't care what the glass was as long as it was thick enough, that $40 was glass and cutting
