Mussels filter out phytoplankton. There may be some others like clams that eat nitrate, Maybe someone else will chime in

mussels being one of above. just to keep it fed you need to constant-drip phyto into tank until tank water takes on greenish tint. tried this once grew my own phyto to feed all my nonphotos until pain in butt became too much to bear.

I have a whole pile of them in my tank. They came as hitchhikers and they just keep growing. I've even seen them spawn a few times. I'll feed them some Reef Roids or other similar food every once in a while but for the most part I completely forget they're there. They're really easy to take care of.

i have various oysters mussels and scallops in my tank right now-no problem feeding them(probably have close to 40 small ones in my 220)but i think it's only the clams that filter the phosphates

I have one in my tank. I bought some Zoa's from LFS a few months ago, they were on what I thought was just a shell until I put it in my tank and the darn thing disappeared with my new zoa's. It has since found a new spot, but stays very close to the rocks. I haven't been feeding it, and it's doing fine. I do feed some phyto to my clams and cucumber so it likely gets some of that.
