View Full Version : ~450 gallon reef setup
Well, this system has been almost a year in the making. Here is what I have and the progress so far.
I have a 220 gallon (72x30x24) and a 150 (48x24x30) that will be plumbed into a sump located in a small "fish room". The 220g will go along my back wall and the 150g will go behind my bar.
Equipment list:
Tanks:
220g (72x30x24) - Starphire front and sides, bean style overflow along back, eurobraced, back of tank painted black.
150g (48x24x30) - Starphire front, back, side, Herbie (or Durso) overflow, eurobraced.
Sump (60x30x18) - Divided into Skimmer, Refugium, Return
Other:
- x2 Pacific Sun Black Python 160w LED (for 150)
- ATI 10x80w Powermodule (for 220)
- Profilux 3 Ex (pH, ORP, Salinity, Temperature) - Auto top off
- Profilux 5 breeze fan
- Profilux 3SA doser
- x3 PAB powerbars
- Profilux LED touch screen (ordered should be in by end of May)
- Vertex Alpha Kone 300
- Water Blaster HY5000 (return for 150)
- Blueline HD40x (return for 220)
- x2 300w Heaters
- x3 MP40's
- x2 VT battery back ups
- Profilux Vortech Module
Stay tunned for some photos!!!!

Hi,
Welcome, seems like you're going to be busy. Looking forward to seeing some pics. With that light I sense some nice SPS:wink:
Where in your home is all this going and what do you consider a 'small fish room'

I am not sure how to post photos on this site, so I am sorry that my photos have the AP signature on it. Maybe someone can direct me on how to upload via the CanReef site.

Welcome to Canreef. :D
Most use a pic host like Photobucket or others. Then just use the image code tag to post it here.
Same can be done with our gallery but not sure its working correct yet from the upgrades.
There are some posts on how to use the tags, etc. I just need to find them.
Thanks for the reply.
I would normally use photo bucket, but for some reason work has blocked the site.

Pretty involved with the piping through the walls I dig. An aquarium behind the bar is going to look so amazing.

Thanks, I figured I might as well run the plumbing in the wall since I am redoing everything in that room.
I will have access points in case I need to pull pipe in the future, so it should be pretty fail safe...

Great Idea using the Waterproof drywall throughout. Is there an air handling system?
I have the 'fish room' exhausted outside, but I don't have anything else yet.
Any suggestions?? I know this will be an issue.
I have a decent dehumidifier as well, but I doubt it will keep up with x3 ~200g tanks

I installed an HRV...made a huge improvement to the air quality or the whole house.
I have a forced air heating, any ideas on the cost??

About $2000 depending on the amount of duct work required...
staceyd72
04-23-2011, 01:47 PM
Great update, should be a quiet room. The HRV is that way to go for your fish room, it's pricey but well worth it. If you connect it to your furnace(forced air) the furnace fan has/should be run continuously for proper air circulation,(this is what I was told) different models may have different requirements though; this may be an added electrical cost.
Another option would would be to install an exhaust fan in the fish room, the Elicent (http://www.gchydro.com/Elicent+Inline+Fan.html) inline fans work great and move a lot of air for the money.
Thanks Stacey.
I do have the fish room exhausted outside (just a simple dryer vent in a window with a fan/duct work). You can see the hole in the back of the room in the first "drywall/mudding pic".
I will be doing some research on the HRV unit. I believe I should be able to make it work with the existing duct work, but I will have to bring someone in to take a look.
For the time being I will try the dehumidifier/direct exhaust first and if I can't keep my humidity down then I will need to go with a unit more appropriate.
Anyone have any suggestions for a good dehumidifier? (minimum 70 pints), that is energy efficient and dependable (I would imagine it will be running more often the not).
Thanks guys/gals

are the wallplates just for reinforcing the studs where they were notched out for the plumbing?
how are you insulating the pipes? with what? and is that for thermal insulation or acoustic?
btw, great looking build.

Wall plates were used to protect the plumbing and helped to reinforce the studs that were notched out. It is thermal insulation and it is behind the pipes as well.

You should look at an hrv rather than a dehumidifier as they do cost a fair bit more to run than the hrv. I have tried the dehumid route and I'm going hrv as it will pay for itself quicker. Nice build by the way

This system took a lot of planing. Why would you think two tanks would be stupid???

Stupid might have been a little strong. Thats just alot of tanks to be setting up at the same time. But I guess its all one big system anyway.
Go big or go home.
......I also have a third tank being setup on the other side of the room (my 180 FOWLR). Its not connected to the reef system, but it will be in that room

I don't have a lot of flow going to this tank since I just tee'd off one of my return pumps, hence the reason for all the VT.

Thanks for the compliments :)
I really like Scoly's, however there doesn't seem to me much demand for them I think due to there high price tag, but IMO they can have some of the most beautiful colours found in a reef. I also find they are not very difficult to keep, a weekly feeding of a good pellet/mysis shrimp is all that they require.
I think I am up to 16 now :D
I am a big fan of Scolys. :D

Turned out one of my Scoly's was hosting a mantis shrimp...found out the hard way when he smashed my finger...twice!!!!
He is still living in the rock the Scoly is attached too...I just can't bring myself to get rid of the little guy :)
...He likes the feedings of mysis :)
Ouch!
Beautiful scoly's though, even if one has a mean house guest!

Can't wait till I can get a styro box from u :)
Some chalice are more difficult then others. The ones that are collected in deep water are much harder to keep then the others. Aussie are typically a little harder then Indo.
That one in the photo is an Aussie Piece. I would consider it a medium difficulty for keeping corals.
Spot feedings always help, but I usually just broadcast feed the whole tank.

Thankfully ReefRaft will ship lol. I have 7 rr pieces and yes some are harder. But mostly because the origanal pics are from when they first come into captivity. My pink Floyd for eg is not the pink Floyd we see. That's the downside of wild pieces

Ya, I tried to set up a group order with a local Calgarian a few months ago. It kinda fell through the cracks though. Mostly because neither of us were prepared for the financial hit at that time  I may try again one day, but it's not easy. They gave us their marketing pictures only, so no WYSIWYG unfortunately. And yes, you're right. With most of these pieces being wild it's a bit of a crap shoot in trying to maintain their lustre.
Anyway, in the meantime I will just enjoy vicariously through this thread :-D

Reef Raft Canada has recently closed its doors to retail.
They are a wholesale only company now.

Although Jay has closed his doors to the general public, he will still be around selling corals privately. I wouldn't rule out getting specific corals shipped. RR doesn't want to deal with the day to day traffic, but shipments are still in the ball game!
The best corals in Canada will still come through RR.

The plot thickens! That's certainly an interesting turn of events. So does that mean they're going to be another "ReefWholesale" ? With the exception that they may ship to the odd hobbyist ?
Also, sorry for the 'jack. Maybe we should move this discussion into the lounge

You don't have to feed Acans, they do benefit from additional feedings, but in most systems it is not required.

I just wanted to drop you a line to say "Thank-you" for your hospitality yesterday. It was nice catching up with you and a few LFS that were fortunate enough to tour your personal Display and Aquaculture setup.
P.S. - Sunglasses are a pre-requisite. Quote from one LFS: "There was not one 'average' piece in his frag tanks. They were all cherries."
P.P.S. - Your Borbs are the LARGEST I've seen in captivity. They have kept their colours very well.
