Hi im thinking its time to change my return pump im running a 90g mixed with sump (about 30 not 100% sure of the size) hydor 1, 2 and a return of 660 right now... so about my water currently changes about 15X/hr i would like to go with something higher 900-1200gph, (also needs to be submersible)

what pump can you recommend, i would like something quieter my tanks in my living room thanks

so i went to a few different places today and got a 1800gph mag drive that i am going to try to use and slit it with lock line so i can get rid of my powerheads... (the manager said if it didnt work i can return it) so why not right! has anyone ever done that before?

Would help to know the brand, otherwise we can't be sure how much quieter you need. Reasonable pumps are the Danner MAG line, maybe a 900 or 1200, or a Quiet One 4000 or so....

I am a big fan of the ehiem pumps for the noise. The 1262 is a extremely quiet but only pushes 900gph. I have 2 Mag 1800 running my 180 and they are great pumps just a bit more noisy then the ehiem.

ATB Flowstar 1500 - extremely efficient and as quiet as the eheims but uses less power. About $220.

I switched to a Mag not too long ago, and am very happy with the low noise level.

Is the pump rated at 660gph or is that the actual flow you get with head pressure?

thats what its rated for i would say its a whole lot less... more like 300-400 the pressure feels similar to my hydor 1

Then I would go with the Ehiem as already suggested, it'll give you about 50% more flow and they are very reliable and quiet. The problem with other pumps like Mag or QuietOne is they can be hit or miss, sometimes they can work well and quietly but quite often they can be noisy and even have problems from time to time.

My friend runs an Eheim Compact+ 5000 (http://www.jlaquatics.com/phpstore/store_pages/product-info.php?product_ID=em-pc5000) on his 180g, runs very quiet (as Eheim is known for), been using it for 16 months with no issues.
