I picked this tank up today in Calgary, I figure it about 80G. The tank is 48.5"L x 22"D x 17"H with a left corner overflow, 1.5" drain and a 1" return. I am still unsure on equipment, I would like to go MH or LED for lighting, tunze 1262 return pump, and I am not sure about dual MP10W ES or MP40W ES. I think for the money spent I will see better results with the 10's but for right now its going to be pieced together slowly.

Here is how it looked after Mike & I got it in the house.

I wasted no time in cleaning this thing up.
Step One take off paint on sides.

Only one piece left to be scraped. The back only took about an hour but I found a technique half way through and the last half went pretty fast.

Well after a trip to Home Depot, an agonizing weight at the till because they thought I was lieing how many pieces of lumber there was and the guy in that section on break here is the raw product.

Well not much going on today. Secured the power bar to the stand and..... plugged it in.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/photo-1.jpg

Oh and I ordered glass for the euro-brace. After some consultation from Mike and the guys on canreef I got a pretty good idea on how I am going to do my canopy. BTW anyone got a source on some cheap quiet fans that plug into the wall?

Ryan
03-11-2011, 01:47 PM
Well I think I got a design for my sump, I think I will go 36" x 18" x 18". Tell me what you think.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/photo-2.jpg

Going from left to right the horizontal line is for a holder for my filter sock.
Below is a chamber for my protien skimmer and whatever else I want to put in there (reactors, probes etc.)
Next is a frag chamber; this will have a section in the back for mangroves. I am probably going to put in a rack for the mangroves and DIY a tray for substrate. Im still unsure if I want to permanently put in a trough for a DSB for the mangroves. This will mean the frag chamber is 12x12.
After that is a set of baffles then the last chamber is a section for the pump and the heaters.

BTW each square equals 1".

Another Update!!

Yesterday I got a Quiet One 4000 in next to new condition. I guess it was too big for the previous tank. Thanks again Randy!!

Today I spent my lunch hour running around like a chicken with my head cut off looking for plumbing supplies. I think I got all the fittings I need, all thats let is the loc-line so an order from J&L will happen here pretty quick.

I also was able to get my glass cut for my euro brace and blocks for the stand to sit on. Big thanks to Scott for grabbing that for me on his way home.

So here is everything when I got home.

Glass for the Euro Brace
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/photo-3.jpg

Well apparently I got the glass for the sides too big so I put the glass master to work trimming off a 1/4 inch.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/photo3-3.jpg

After a trip to TFI for a tube of silicone and a silicone gun, here I am putting down the silicone.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/photo10.jpg

This is what happens when you let the glass Master help you put on the euro brace.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/photo7-1.jpg

Ofcourse the silicone was on the tank already so he sped off to TFI to get another brace cut and get the blocks for the stand cut.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/photo9-1.jpg

Add 2 beads of silicone
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/photo5-1.jpg

Press onto Euro brace and you have a block that will keep my canopy frame off the bracing and water so it wont get wet.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/photo8-1.jpg

The almost finished product. I am going to trim the excess silicone tomorrow evening.

I havent tried the plumbing yet but the night is young :D

Got most of the plumbing inside the tank done. All thats needed now is the Loc-Line and to construct the air control on the cap of the Durso.

Alright well another bunch of updates but where to start?

I got the overflow grate installed and they turned out alright. Im happy with them but I found my 1st mistake. I build the return line to clear the glass part of the overflow without taking into consideration the overflow grate. Ofcourse its glued already so I had to build a new one. DOH!
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/photo-4.jpg

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/photo2-5.jpg

Next I found a take I can use as a sump. So yesterday I went out and got all the glass I needed to make the baffles. Unfortunatly I forgot to take a picture of the tank before I ripped the bracing off.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/photo9-2.jpg

Now that the tank is all cleaned up its time to put in the glass.
This will be the shelf my sock holder will sit on.

I also got the lumber for the canopy.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/photo8-2.jpg

I think I built it a little tall. The Its only 18" high but I think I should have gone 14-16 high.

Next weekend I want to skirt in the stand and canopy with some nicer wood. I plan on staining it dark to match the furniture. Hopfully lastlight will chime in here on this one.

I want to use his idea for the stand doors so they slide open. I would like to do the same with the canopy doors as well. What did you use to do this?

Thank you for all the compliments guys. I think the next step now is a J&L order for some Loc-Line, heaters and a thermometer.

So this morning I did all the plumbing on the tank. I was a little worried at first when it finally noticed the 1.5" overflow line was right between my return and my pump.

Well a little work with a 90 degree mpt x barb and some 1" vinyl hose and we have all the plumbing done.

I just used a pair of drawer slides per door.

http://www.softsmart.com/popup/PopupPix9/DrawerSlides.jpg

They work pretty well so long as you have thick plywood for the doors. I first used 1/2" and it was not straight enough and when the doors met up it looked pretty ghetto. 3/4" worked well for me and the pics in the thread should show how I made the top lip of the doors. Again more ghetto action but it got hidden with the tiles so you'll need to take a bit more care!

Build's lookin' good =)

Ryan, looking good so far. It's amazing how a little elbow grease and hard work can make a tank look good. Just a quick question for ya,..... when you were scraping off the paint from the back side of the tank, you said about half way through you found a better (and faster) way to remove the old paint. Just curious what you did and secondly, did you spray or roller(paint) the black paint on the back? I want to repaint my back side of tank as well, but not sure whether to spray or paint! Thanks.

Sorry for the long past due thank you. Thanks for the compliments. Lots has happened in the past few days. The tank cycles (hurray for keeping liverock in sterilite containers alive), I did a little rearranging but not much. Im thinking another 30 pounds and I should be good. Im pretty happy with how the left side is sitting but I want a piece or two more to finish off the end.

I will also be grabbing my lighting this Friday when I come to Calgary. My dad's new puppy arrives at the airport Friday evening so I will be in to pick him up.

I have found 2x 250W DE Lumenbright Pendants with Galaxy Ballasts for my lighting. I am still trying to decide if I want to go with T5HO or LED's for Actinic Supplements. If I go LED I only want to run Cree Royal Blues.
I will be using the Phoenix 14K bulbs for the halides so what do you guys think I should do for Actinic?

Ryan

UPDATE TIME!!!!!

Alright so yesterday I was in Calgary picking up a new puppy and couldnt pass on these Halides. Last night I installed them into the canopy and right away I wasnt happy with them. These Halides really are meant to be a pendants. They are 16" diameter and 8 or 10 inches deep. They fill up the whole canopy and leave very little water uncovered. Both pendants are run by 2x 250W Electronic Galaxy Ballasts.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/2b393f38.jpg

So this morning I decided I was going to change it. I went out, picked up some supplies, cut some lumber, and went to work. I also mounted the Ballasts in the canopy. What do you guys think of that idea? Keep in mind there will be 2x 120mm fans blowing air into the canopy and a vent in the top to let hot air escape.

Here is how it sits now.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/56bcc2e4.jpg

Now the bad news. The bulbs are over a year old and are only good for growing algae. But a J&L order was placed and I should have the Loc-Line to finish the return as well as a new Phoenix 14K Bulb show up wednesday or thursday. Also the seller forgot to give me the power cords for the ballasts. I was distracted by new puppy Guiness trying to eat everything I didnt catch it. So they will be shipped out on Monday and should reach the house Wednesday as well.

Hopefully we see some light later this week. Man its going to be a loooong wait.

Sorry I took so long to reply to this. I totally missed it until I just reread the thread.

What I did was use an arch scrape pattern and only cut enough paint to fill half the razor vs the entire razor. I also made sure I always used a fresh razor blade as they cut much easier.

I picked up a little roller kit from walmart ($4) and used it to roll the paint onto the glass. Because of the overflow I used some masking top to make a nice line and rolled on the paint. This makes it look clean and covers the view of the overflow from that side.

I wish my fixture had as much light spread as these. My tank is 30" front to back and most combo fixtures just don't cover that area effectively. Are these SE or DE bulbs?

They are DE bulbs.

The J&L came in today so a little update. After 2 hours of ****ing around we finally got the fixtures and skimmer running. I should be able to move the remaining SPS from the frag tank into the display and shut the frag tank down.

Here is the tank with the Ushio 14K

Here are some random pictures from tonight. Things are looking pretty rough, I have been neglecting the frag tank since starting this build.

Hopefully I get better because I am not too happy with these. Maybe a SLR with a macro lens is in order this summer.

I love this piece when its in full colour. Its a blue polyp A. austera and I cant wait for it to colour back up.

Thanks Dana. They have browned out a little in the move. I am anxious for them to get back to the pitch black.

Today I sifted the sand in the display. I wasnt happy with the big hunks on the sand. I did it for half the tank and really liked it more than the other side. The bigger pieces I put down in the frag section. I figure it will make a great media for pods to live in.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/P3270065.jpg

I also took some time and installed my ATO. I was worried at 1st that it wouldnt be long enough to reach down into the return section but after I realized the tank needed to be topped up (DER!) it will work perfect with plenty of room for adjustment.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/P3270064.jpg

I also realized a few downfalls with this setup im not too happy with. I guess they will have to wait to be addressed the next time the tank is moved. A big one is the limited amount of space under the stand with a sump this size. I am thinking off the left size to build a storage cabinet for my electronics and bulk chemicals. The top could also double as an end table or bench.

Anyway thats it for the update for the day.

A little update, all the diatoms have come and gone but in their place has come a nasty film algae problem. I think it's my own fault as I over dosed some stuff a few days ago thinking the tank could handle it and I was wrong.

I have been fighting it for 3 days now with extra vodka and it looks like tonight my 1ml dose (I was dosing 0.4ml) has it slowed down. It was so bad the glass would algae up in less than 30min and my water was cloudy as heck. Now the glass is cleared up and the water clarity is improving.

Funny thing my corals look amazing right now.

After a little late night shopping I scored some magician paly's. I was dumb and only bought a frag of them but I am thinking of going back for the colony on Monday. Here are some pictures from lastnight after about 30min in the tank.

After a trip to Home Depot lastnight I tried the Oatey Fix-it stick. I am not too happy with the product. I does the job for some of the basic stuff but I tired to mount some pieces horizontal and it wouldnt stick to the plugs too well. I think they are too smooth where as the D-D epoxy worked really well. I guess I could have used superglue as well but I didnt have any.

It also hardens really fast (1 or 2 minutes after mixing) so that kinda surprised me. The D-D stuff takes a little longer to dry so you can mix a bunch then break it off as you need it. The downside it stays soft so you have to make sure you have stuff really planted in there.

For the $8/tube it costed me it was a good product but I think I will stick with the D-D for the extra $4. Oh I used 2/3s of a tub and my skimmer didnt go too crazy. It did get a little more wet but it wasnt too bad.

I am a little behind, been a little busy around here the past few days. A few days ago I switched some LR around and ditched the island. I moved it into the back to continue the wall. I think I want to continue brining rock forward on the right side to make a cove there. Keep the rock low with maybe a little point near the front.

Mike finally made his way over here yesterday and was impressed on how the tank was looking so that was happy to hear him say that.

I fed Fauna Marin tonight and snapped some photos plus Top downs. Let me know what you guys think!

A little bit of an update here with some growth shots.

We went to Calgary yesterday and even though it wasnt a fish trip I still managed to make a couple stops.

I was happy to see Gold's had one more of the Dispar Anthias so I picked it up. I also found 2 really nice little Porcelain Crabs there, man I love these little guys. I also found out today the new Anthias is a Male and both have been flaring at each other all morning. No real intimidation yet or fighting so I hope they get alone. This puts me at 2 male and 2 females but I am thinking maybe another 2 girls would really light up this tank. The original 3 have started eating the New Era Marine Flake and Prime Reef Flake like crazy now, the larger male even tries to take down NLS pellets.

I grabbed some photos today before the lights came on and finally got some older pictures off the camera.

So I will start with my porcelain Crabs. These guys have set up shop on the left side for good now I think. The bigger red one hangs out higher up on the rock under the Meteor Shower Cyphastrea with the smaller more purple female hiding more on the back side of the rock down near the bottom. I just love these 2.

With the anthias I am feeding fairly heavy (5 - 6 times per day) and only doing vodka (1ml/day). I am really happy with the results right now. I would like to add some Bartlett's Anthias in the near future.

Tank looks great Ryan. Love the Anthias and the corals are sweet too.

Ryan
05-14-2011, 01:24 PM
Thanks Leah, the Anthias are my favorite fish in there right now. The males are flaring at each other and all the females right now so its making for a very active tank. I've been trying to get pictures but they are so food oriented that they run right to the front corner expecting to be fed everytime they see me.

Woo another little update. This Maxi-Jet with Sureflow kit is really starting to make me mad. The suction cups just arent wanting to stick to the glass and it seems some days the pump really chatters. I am looking forward to the day I can afford a 3X MP10W ES upgrade or a 3x Tunze 6055 upgrade.

I did a water change yesterday and did some tests while I was at it. It appears the corals have been growing because my ALk was down to 8dkH and the calcium was 195.... oops. Usually I like to run it about 10-12 dkh and the calcium about 425. So I added a bunch of baked baking soda and Calcium Chloride to the water change, I will make the rest up over the next couple days.

I also moved some stuff around. The Hot Pink Mille is starting to grow and is aiming right for my Cali Tort so the tort got banished to the back where it can have lots of room.
The Purple with White Polyp acro got moved as well to a more central location in the tank. I am going to see how it colors up here in the middle then maybe secure it permanently.
I woke up one morning to find the Red Planet on the sand so I moved it as well. It didnt go far just around the rock a little more so it wouldnt interfere with my purple/blue tabling acro.
The Super Grape Mille got moved as well closer to the light. It should have plenty of room to spread out now! This is such a nice piece when its full size.

I also moved a little rock around on the right side and had 1 piece left over so I started to make the last little arm to complete the cove. So far I like it but I am thinking of going a little farther up. Its mostly zoanthids and Palys right now which is okay with me.

End of the Month update with bad news. Yesterday I awoke to 2 dead bodies in the tank. I lost the sickly little Dispar Anthias and my big male. All day I couldnt find the other 2 that were supposed to be left and now today still no sign. I think they are dead in the rocks as well. I did a water change on friday otherwise nothing was changed. All 4 were doing so well and eating like pigs. The little guy never really bulked up and had a sore so I thought maybe he was a goner but I never expected the other 3 to go too.

Now I need to find something to replace them with. I dont want to get Dispars again or Evansii anthias. I would like to find a nice schooling fish that are always in the open to add some movement. I am thinking maybe a 2M 3F school of flasher wrasses but I defiantly want to stay away from your common stuff like chromis. What do you guys think I should get?

I picked up a nice little plate coral this month as well. Nice orange with some light green flecks throughout. I think once I add the Royal Blue LED's this coral is really going to pop.

Now for some pictures.

I guess its time for an update! I recently moved into a new place and thought I was going to have to downsize. Recently we found a place for the big tank and I got down to getting it reassembled before the mrs. changes her mind.

Things have been sitting in a holding tank without a light (infront of a window) and no skimmer so most of the SPS has lost color. You guys wont be seeing pictures of those though!

Also added a bunch of new fish, funny how when you have an empty big tank you cant find any fish that appeal to you but the second you have limited space you start finding fish everywhere. So far the stocking list 2 clowns, Blue Assessor, one Neon Goby, one McCoskers Wrasse, and the new guys are a couple Bangaii Cardinals.

I'm just going to start my build thread (finally).

Hey Ryan is that an engineer goby? If so, did you only put only one in? Just curious. They are pretty cool fish but I have read a few things saying they are better in pairs or groups. Is your's tunneling/building stuff solo?

Ryan
01-01-2012, 06:58 AM
Thats a Blue Neon Goby.

The last thing I want is an 18" engineer goby mining under my rock work..... or a school of them!

lee9
01-02-2012, 05:08 AM
Oops. I thought the maximum size for the engineer goby was listed as 1". After reading your post I checked again and it was actually listed as 1'. I guess I won't be getting an engineer goby.

Ryan
01-02-2012, 05:09 AM
Ive seen them come in at 2". If they stayed this size they would be a great fish to have in the tank. But at adult size Engineer gobies can topple rocks that arent placed right on the bottom.

Ryan

Thanks. Its definatly coming around but im not happy with the colors or coral health yet. Im sure its just a matter of time before everything settles in.

The wrasse has some stress spots on him as its only been 2 days in the tank. So far I really like him but I have read they can get fairly boisterous with the tank mates. Though I do still want to add a couple female mcCoskers, and a pair of Rhomboids. I would like this tank to have quiet a few flasher & Fairy Wrasses.

But this is always a good thing when you come home right? 2 more Banggai Cardinals, 2x Ricordia, and 2x .......... NEON GOBIES!!!!! I am so excited to find 2 more.

So after a trip to calgary I picked up a new light fixture. I picked up a TEK 6 Bulb off Lorenz0 and plan on adding a pair of Reef Bright LED strips to it so I can pop colors.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/5ed08598.jpg

I also picked up some live goodies!!

I found 2 Scarlet Reef Hermits at Big Al's which was pretty exciting as I have been looking for them for a while. I would like to add another 8 eventually but we will see how well behaved these 2 are. I also was able to pick up a sand sifting star to help the nassarius stir the sand.

I also picked up a couple of the Walt Smith pieces from Red Coral. One is a Teal A. humilis and the other is a Pink with Blue tips Tabling Acro. I have this same species in yellow with blue tips but the small frag that survived when the colony RTN hasnt done much. Hopefully this frag grows fast.

Last but not least and defiantly a great score is a Yasha Hase (sp?) goby from Pisces! Sorry guys no picture as he darted into the rocks as soon as he hit the water. I hope I actually get to see him once he sets up shop. They also had a Golden Angel I wanted but with the cloudy eyes I was very hesitant and left it there. Oh I wanted him so badly though!

Didnt pick this up today but here is an acro I picked up last week. Doesnt look like the colony but we will see.

Forgot to mention My Bangaii Cardinals paired off I beleive and have sent 2 into the Corners of the tank. So I have 2 up for sale or trade if anyone is interested. They have different looking Jaw lines but I am not forsure if they are male and female.

Also my 2 little Neon Gobies paired up I think. They have staked claim under a rock and forced a Porcelain Crab out of his home. The other Neon Goby kinda makes the odd appearance in the tank during feeding.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/c15fbbaa.jpg

Dood, that plexi-glass thing you have clamped onto the side of your sump for your ATO.....where did you get that? I see it is adjustable so you can lower or raise your float valve. That is EXACTLY what I'm looking for.

Well I was checking out my aquarium tonight as I fed as usual and found this. Excuse the piece of styrofoam its in there until the epoxy cures.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Ryan_GSP/80G%20Build/IMG_0947.jpg

I have noticed these guys flaring and twitching but I thought they were just being aggressive to each other after I removed the other 2 cardinals. I guess not!! So now its all research tonight in preparation for the new babies. I was planning on redoing the sump for a longer more narrow frag section (so I can use T5) but I had no idea I would need to be thinking of baby cardinals.

Oh and I ordered glass for the euro-brace. After some consultation from Mike and the guys on canreef I got a pretty good idea on how I am going to do my canopy. BTW anyone got a source on some cheap quiet fans that plug into the wall?

You need a better drip loop on your cord

I found it from fellow canreef member. I also talked to Oceanic Corals and he said he could get me one as well but went with the local guy because I wouldnt have to ship and ive dealt with him before.

If your looking give Paul a call hes happy to help you out.

Now just the long painful wait for this thing to start growing.
