View Full Version : Grizz's 116 gal FOWLR rebuild - 90% done but up & running

The Grizz

Picked up a sweet shaped 116 gal tank awhile back from Mike (fishyfishy). It really needed to be re-sealed, there are no holes or overflow.

I decided after I peeled out all the internal corner beads that it just needs to be totally dismantled. So away I went, was able to slide a razor blade down each corner between the glass pains separating each corner. Removed all the remaining silicone and cleaned the glass.

Decided to go with black silicone on this build, thanks to Concept Aquariums for hooking me up with it.

Here is what it looked like to start.

http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx291/GRIZZtheWELDER/116%20gal%20FOWLR/5533ea8b.png

Going to build an overflow box on the back in order to keep the volume the same. Going to euro brace it as well, not sure if I will go one piece as it will depend on the cost.

More pics to follow soon.

It was not a good pic, the marine apprentice took it with his iPhone and I didn't think to take one before I had one side already apart.

I did the same type of rebuild once. It works very well. A one peice eurp brace is Ok but expensive. I would love to come over and see your tank one day soon.

I am hoping to cut the euro myself so it will cut down the cost. My tanks are not much to look at just a bunch of LPS, Softies and zoas:biggrin: but you are more then welcome to come for a visit.

Not much in the way of progress on the tank yet have been pre-occupied but I do have it back together and cleaned for a pic. Have to try to cut a notch for the OF and I am sure it will not be pretty so I will have to hide it well.

Thank Mike  I hope it turns out well, I cut the overflow notch out yesterday but it did not turn out great so I will have to hide it with some black acrylic. Still trying to decide if I go get a 1 piece euro brace cut or just do it with 4 stripes.

Well finally got around to building the steel frame stand for the tank. I went with 30" tall & put adjustable feet as well.

http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx291/GRIZZtheWELDER/116%20gal%20FOWLR/96edb549.jpg

Cut a piece of G1S spruce for the top & added some 1/2" styro. Here's what it looks like with the tank on it.

Uhmm....Thanks but I just have one question...........who is Dan and what does he have to do with the welding?

Coming along Greg, looks good. What kind of levelling feet do you use?

Yes slowly but surely it will be done. I used 3/4" A325 structural bolts, welded the nut into the bottom of the HSS still have to cut some 1/4" x 4" round plates to weld to the bolt.

There are co here in the lower mainland that have round plates punched out from previous jobs. Maybe you could find some up there?

All good I have been called worse :twised:

I use a 4" solid round bar to set my bandsaw blades, they are useless for anything else but make great foot pads for stands.

This time of year my wife is ALWAYS hard to put up with. It's not -20 but it also not +15 either so she doesn't like it when it takes forever for the snow to melt so she can get out and start working on the flower gardens and veg garden.

So are those dusty RC cars gas powered and for sale?

That to funny  you are not supposed to be looking at the mess behind the tank but to answer your question yes they are gas powered and no not for sale. They get shelved for the winter and come summer my boy & I build a little track in the field and see what he can wreck on his

Short update, plumbing is now 100% done & tested, works exactly like I hoped it would. Skinned the sides & back with 3/8" birch, going to insulate the inside with 1/2" pink insulation. Bought some inexpensive LED panels from EBay for lighting, 225 LEDS per 12" x 12" panel 113 white 112 blue. Not really bright but I like the color. Hope to build the canopy tomorrow & do a quick timer/power supply.

Yep no overlap, the panels are 12 1/4" x 12 1/4' so I was unable to put all 3 in a row but I like the way the light looks with water in the tank. I was thinking of trying a couple of my leathers and a few shrooms in this tank but not 100% sure yet

Well so far I have found the Profilux to be easier to program the power bar because you can hook it to a laptop.

If someone that has an Apex can tell me how to program the power bar that would be great, I am test driving this unit for Oxymoron but have one coming for my FOWLR.

I am not sure if this has been asked but what kind of led's are you using and any guess on PAR.

The LED panels were a cheap EBay purchase, not sure of the wattage per LED or the par. I thought I would give them a try simply because it's a FOWLR.

very nice Grizz - you're a master of multiple mediums from the looks of it (steel, wood, fish :))

Thanks PDR, I hope to get the rest of the cabinet down this week.

Stock Update:

Picked up 3 really beautiful butterfly fish from my main gal Megan at BA'son Friday, could not resist the price and how healthy the looked.

Got a Red Fin, Black Back & Vagabond butterfly all around the same size about 2" long. All look very healthy & very happy in there new home. Only downfall is the little buggers don't stay still long enough for a photo op but I will try to get a few pic's of them as soon as I can.

Well so far I have found the Profilux to be easier to program the power bar because you can hook it to a laptop.

The Apex can be plugged into your router with an ethernet cable (provided) and accessed over a web browser by typing in its IP address... but I actually programed all of mine with the display unit. Without knowing the programing language and what all of my options were I found the web interface to be only useful for very basic programs and making modifications. Even though I owned an ACIII for several years it took me a while to figure out how to work with the Apex. Unfortunately I got it all figured out before I discovered the 'easy to read' new user guide here: http://reeftech.webs.com/

Hey grizz any updates on this tank :) how did the LEDs pan out?did the leathers survive the fish?

Not much has changed, the leathers were just fine with the fish but where not happy with the amount of light from the cheap a$$ LEDs that I bought. So I had to move my Devils Hand back into the reef tank but I will be moving it back as well as a huge colt coral and maybe some mushrooms once I get some better LED's from my LED hookup Martin / Modular LED.
