well 100 hours on the 14K bulbs and some more pics.
I am overall impressed with the look of this bulb to me it looks like the radium, but seing that it is a 14K bulb I think it is to blue for its rating. maybe we should call it a 18K bulb  one thing to note I adjusted the overall color so that the corals look like they would if you were here looking at them but this lowered the amount of blue you would see in the water and sand and such..
anyways here are a few pics

=o)
looks awesome
hey that deep water acro .. is it changing its colors to neon green?
Not a bad colour temp. I think I would have to see it in person though.
You've really got some nice corals going on now. My home display is looking a little empty. *cough* ahem.

Nice pics steve.. tank is looking good.. something is telling me if you are saying that is "too blue" you have colour corrected the photos in some way.. Did you change W/B?

Adam, he stated that he did alter the pics to remove the blue.

not sure it was a but ugly brown acro that was given to me that is slowly turning into one of my nicest acros.
Adam, yest I used a custom white ballance to remove the blue glow but keep the coral colors. other than that all I did was resize.
Smokin, I also run two 36" VHO for actinic (actualy one is a NO right now as Brad and I broke one of my VHOs trying to put a coral in the tank in the spring.

hey steve...
how do you like the color of the 14k without any supplementation?

well it is hard to say. to blue for my liking when you think it is a 14K. the AB is a 13K and it is white so you would expect 14K to be pretty much white also.
um if you like radiums you will like the 14K (I think they would be hard to tell apart and I might have the opertunity to take a side by side with a radium in the near future.)

Can you run the 14k on an HQI ballast at all?

talked to john at j&l prior to picking up my 14000k bulbs
and he said they prefer you using a pulse start ballast on the bulbs for longer use/life

well as much as I respect J&L's opinion on coral and fish, there lighting advice has never been more than I would expect from any LFS. they don't push HQI there as most people won't spend the extra money to buy the ballasts and they also find it hard to push something they don't run as would any store.
in the last year we have descovered from the big lighting companies that 400 watt HQi ballast are not real HQIs but rather a cheep Son Agro ballast not even made for MH lights. We have also learned that most 250 watt MH bulbs actualy run to the original design on 250 watt HQI ballasts (which are true HQI ballasts)
I my self ran a set of AB 10K 250 watt bulbs for just shy of 2 years with only a 7% loss in output. on normal ballast these bulbs were losing 12% after 1 year.

thanks for the input steve
Steve
How many hours of bulb life do you figure you will get running the 14000K bulbs on son agro ballast.
Thanks,
Andy
