My fist real Marine build…

What started off as a 36” Marineland cube has now evolved into a Starphire 36x32x20 with an external rear overflow, One piece Euro brace and two MP40 pockets built by Concept Aquariums. It will be placed on a custom built 32” stained Oak stand.

Thus far I have:

Custom Starphire tank 36x32x20 (99gal) w/milled 1pc euro top, black silicone, all polished edges & modified Bean animal rear external overflow. Currently sitting on the coffee table
2x MP40W es
Custom Hardwood Stand 75% completed
Skimz SM161
Bubble Magus Calcium reactor with 5lb alum co2, reg, solenoid etc.
Home Depot LED under stand lighting
DA RKE+net controller
100lbs of eco-reefer rock
100lbs of eco-reefer sand
BRS dual reactor (GFO/Carbon)
Vertex ZF-15 w/ bio pellets (haven't decided to run yet, mixed reviews etc)
Windows based PC for build (truly a Mac guy)
Still trying to decide on

Lighting for DT (Vertex Illumina 260 vs. Pacific Sun Black Python 200) ???- update= going with the PS fixture.
Sump design (basement vs. under DT) ???- update went under tank as I plan to build a new home in the next couple of years (2 or so)
Proflux III for lights and MP40 ???
I have a couple nice MH fixtures I may use to get things up and running but really want to give LED a go.

More to follow...

Got tired of looking at the empty tank so I added the the rock and sand then played with the scape...not the look I'm going for but it will have to do until I pick up some rods...

Here's some progress pic's...

Last night I went to put my fresh water tank in the stand, although I left exactly the right amount of room for the tank I forgot to leave enough room to get the it in so I might have to pull the skin off to get it in now,...grrr..lesson learned

I've also ordered a 200w pacific sun python for the lighting and am seriously considering starting with the Prodibio from the ground up.

cale262
02-22-2011, 03:28 PM
Just placed my Prodibio order...

1 x 30 vial kit of start up
1 x 30 vial kit of biodigest
1 x 30 vial kit of BioPtim
1 x 30 vial kit of iodi+
1 x 30 vial kit of reefbooster
1 x 30 vial kit of Stronti+

Also going to use H2Ocean to get things rolling....

Bought some acrylic rod the other day and started to drill rock for my scape but there was no joy to be had there...The rock I have is really nice but doesn't take well to drilling. I was trying to be very careful and take my time but several pieces cracked or crumbled...In the end I have everything somewhat the way i wanted it but minus the bulk of the rod's...I just used a bunch more epoxy than I had planned for. This morning before heading off to work I rechecked it all and it feels pretty secure...I'll post pics when I get home today...

I also started the filling process....drip...drip...drip,...takes a long time when you sit there and watch the RODI drizzle in :dizzy:

Filled with RODI, H2Ocean and PRODIBIO Start Up...MP40's are running...Though I'm not using the sump yet, still have some more work to do in the stand.

http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg293/cale262/Aquaruims/Niner-Niner/th_IMG_0027.jpg (http://s251.photobucket.com/albums/gg293/cale262/Aquaruims/Niner-Niner/?action=view&current=IMG_0027.jpg)http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg293/cale262/Aquaruims/Niner-Niner/th_IMG_0026.jpg (http://s251.photobucket.com/albums/gg293/cale262/Aquaruims/Niner-Niner/?action=view&current=IMG_0026.jpg)http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg293/cale262/Aquaruims/Niner-Niner/th_IMG_0024.jpg (http://s251.photobucket.com/albums/gg293/cale262/Aquaruims/Niner-Niner/?action=view&current=IMG_0024.jpg)

The PRODIBIO instruction are extremely vague, I've added what I figure to be the correct dose (12 vials based on the 90gal instructions), the instruction also say that you are good to add 1/3 (?) of your fish after just 12 hrs...I think I'm going to wait longer than that but I will test things just to see...

Sunday I'll add my seed sand & rock, I also may add a couple more MP40's, one on the left side and one on the right.

I bought the "Reef Bugs" from Aquarium Illusions in Edmonton quite some time ago.

My wife says "What do we need another one of those for...", I just quietly hush her while gently placing my finger to her lips and reply "Sometimes it's not about Need".....

Not that I don't love the Skimz SM161, It's just that I wanted to try a BK and see if they are all they are hyped up to be, so far very simple design and extremely sturdy construction...but I may get a Bubble Blaster 5000 pump to keep on stand by just in case.... Any one know where I can get one?

Dosed the PRODIBIO and accidentally added the Reef Booster too early (supposed to wait 6 weeks) so this morning the DT was a little cloudy... What better time to add some more sand  This afternoon I added about 50lbs of live sand and another 50lbs of live rock...All in, I've got about 150lbs of sand & 200lbs of LR in the DT and sump...

http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg293/cale262/Aquaruims/Niner-Niner/th_IMG_0086.jpg (http://s251.photobucket.com/albums/gg293/cale262/Aquaruims/Niner-Niner/?action=view&current=IMG_0086.jpg)

The livestock planned so far is...

Scopas Tang, a pair of black clowns, two fire shrimp, two cleaner shrimp, one scooter and one lawnmower blenny.

All of which are patiently waiting in another tank...

I also have a nice Purple tang I'd like to add but don't know if I should or not, the two tangs were together in a 90gal system and never had an issue with each other but have been separated for a few months now...

Thanx Bob,

The prodibio looks like it's working, It states that you can add fish right away after adding the Startup but...I've been watching my levels and over feeding the system since day one and I still haven't seen the usual spikes...I'm going to test this afternoon again and maybe add a chromis if things still look good >crossing fingers<

The only spike I have seen so far is a salinity spike which didn't make sense to me at first but then I remembered, I added a lot of rock and sand last wkend and forgot about the displacement affecting the ATO (evaporation and no new RODI), I check yesterday and the salt was at 1.029...I removed five gallons which brought it down to 1.027ish, today I'll recheck and maybe remove a little more.

I like the fact that you can change your light spectrum through-out the day via programming... I know the whole LED thing is kinda new (to me)and all but it does look brighter than the IceCap MH fixture that it replaced...Now that it's hung I'll throw the PAR (thanks Ken) meter under it and see what it says (1300-2300K)...TBC

I also have an Ecoxotic LED fixture on my 24" cube and a ReefTech on the way so it will be interesting to compaire them all side by side.

You have no idea how jealous that makes me!

What do you attribute this to? Was it just really good live rock that you seeded the dry rock with, or was there more to it?

Where did you get the live rock that you seeded the tank with?

cale262

The seeding live rock came from my other tanks, I started with roughly a one to one ratio (100lb LR to 100lb Marco rock) and have been slowly removing the seed rock. I have been running the calcium reactor with ARM and ZeoMag, with a steady stream of afluent... other than that nothing out of the ordinary.

The swabbie, not so much. I think the swabbie is great concept that's been poorly executed by Avast, they really need to address their QA/QC proccess.

Are you getting good colours, I can never capture mine in my pictures always look washed out, the growth is looking good. I like my swabbie its just a pain as the drain from my skimmer cup is below my sump height so i cant use the locker and makes it a pain as skim mate doubled or more.

Colours look good to me,...although I have been toying with the idea of adding a single 24"t5 fiji to the mix. I can't use my locker either, I don't know what the issue is, I plumbed it to my BK and the skimmate just wont travel down the tube no matter how much is in the skimmer cup???

Hmmm...To start with, I ordered the top that is specific to my BK m180 according to the website, when I recieved it though, the grooves in the top don't line up so you have to use the little side clamps to centre the unit, but as i was doing this one of the arms broke off due to a poor weld. After I re-welded it and had it all programmed with the APEX, it looked like it was working well, I then noticed that the skim lip (?) on the bottom of the lid is only just slightly larger than the riser tube in the collection cup, this leaves less than 1mm of a gap for the skim to enter the cup...I let it run as such for a couple days just to see but there wasn't any real skim entering the cup, it just kinda stayed in the riser tube. I contacted Avast about these issues via e-mail he never did respond to me so I posted my query in his section of RC, he sent me a PM a few days later asking me to send him some pictures and I did...that was a couple weeks ago and I have recieved any further response.

Right now it's sitting high and dry.

Just stumbled across your thread today and I have to say you have one slick looking setup! I love the dimensions of your tank and the one piece eurobrace. I was contemplating going with a rimless tank for my next build but after seeing your tank it's going to be a tough decsion.

I seen pics of your sump on the concept aquatics webpage and was wondering if you had any pics you could post of it with all the equipment in there. I'm curious to see how you have the auto water change system plumbed in and how it all works.

Thanks Stones,

I guess it's past time for an update, I actually tore this system down in Feb in order to replace all the floors on the main floor...I just finished setting this tank up again but I have plumbed everything sump wise into the basement...New pics coming this weekend as I wrap it up...

To answer your question about the water change setup, I had my mixing tanks directly under the system in the basement (two 45 gal drums), the new water was plumbed directly to the DT and the waste water was plumbed to a standpipe in the back of the sumps return chamber which exited into a house drain, it was simply a matter of mixing new water and turning on the pump to push it to the DT, the standpipe in the sump was setup just slightly higher than the running level...I didn't take any pictures of this setup but I will take pictures of the new system which is running in the same manner other than the sump being remotely located in the basement.

here's a picture of the old sump where you can see the overflow stand pipe in the upper left chamber.

Thanks for the update. Was curious to hear how your auto water change system worked. You weren't worried you were losing some of your fresh salt water out the drain in the sump? The concept looks great but I wonder what the efficiency losses are based on the fact that new water is being added while waste water is being removed simultaneously.

Good luck with the reassembly of the system. Looking forward to some updated pics.

cale262
06-02-2012, 12:24 AM
I'm sure there was some loss albeit minor but this was the quick change weekly WC. For the monthly change, I would turn off the return pump which would fill the sump up to about 90% capacity, then I would remove the stand pipe and drain the whole sump leaving about 10%, the last of this water and dietris would be removed via shop vac. Last would be turning the pump in the basement filling the sump to the 90% mark again (marked on the side of the sump) and utilizing a float to kill the pump and turn the return pump back on...the skimmer and other equipment would then turn on 30min later...
