background info for the pics:
i've never really cleaned out this one section of my sump, my skimmer was always in there... i just changed to an external skimmer and since i was doing a water change i figured it was time to clean it out... i was grossed out enough by what i found, i figured i'd take some pics and share! lol

May I ask why you turfed them? They are good for a system, just wondering.

i knew this was coming, lol.

they were in a section of my sump that will now be vacuumed regularly, so i wanted to clear them out. basically to reduce the chances of my fingers getting "bristlewormed" when i've got my hands in the sump!

hmmm, it didnt even occur to me to relocate them...
i just instinctively toss them every time i come across one.
FWIW theres thousands more where those came from!
i know they are excellent detrivores, in the past when i've had a fish die, theres never been a carcass left for me to identify.

There are hundreds of them in my tank, I don't care how good they are, but I wish I could catch them like you did. Good thing I had lunch before I saw your pictures ... It really grossed me out.n

Dang! Thems nasty! I, for one, understand why you turfed them. Stupid bristleworm bristles. They're a pain in the arse to remove.

Roll them in batter and then deep fry or 56 seconds at 350f, taste great with a little Chianti.

I've been hunting a big one that's about 8" long in my display. Comes out when the halides are off sometimes and almost always as soon as its dark. Incredibly fast I have not yet successfully tongSnatched the nasty thing. I like the smaller ones in there but this guy is just too dang big.

Nice pile btw!

I had one that annoyed me for a while too, I took a large fishing hook and straightened it out and finally speared it, they are tough little buggers.

Oh that's a great idea. I have a clear, single shot each time. The cheap tongs just don't grip too quick or too well. I'll maybe update this thread when I'm victorious lol.

If you can tweak a treble hook then you cannot miss, I got my mother in law with that set up.

HEHE, no biggie... I am not the worm police

If you had that many, you have even more, so they will re-populate other areas.

I have not tried this myself, but I have read that if you put some food into a nylon stocking at night, then the bristle worms get caught up in the mesh.

I'm glad someone mentioned bristleworms, I felt silly asking... we have a giant that keeps hitchhiking between our tanks (moved some rock). All our more knowledgeable reef friends insisted we kill it. Ours is about 8 to 10 inches long. I kind of like him. We want to know if he is likely to sting or kill fish? or other inverts? Also, anybody want him? Can email pics or video from about a year ago

No, not likely, if it hasn't already done something obvious, chances are it's a harmless detrivore.

If so, I would try to remove it asap...mine ate corals and fish.

I didnt even know I had him till I tore down the tank!
