Does this pole mean there will be some dancing entertainment as well?

You'll be saddened to hear that the pole is coming out after the transfer lol. All it's good for is smoking my head on it and generally driving me nuts.

Thanks guys!

My wife is more anxious than anyone. She needs the tank's spot for the xmas tree upstairs. I also have that 20g mixing tank on the fridge and have since filled a 55g drum next to the fridge with ro/di for my topoffs and general use. It's looking pretty ghetto upstairs so she's cracking the whip harder than I am lol.

Picked up a few buckets of live rock tonight (thanks Andrew!). Time to let it percolate. This was a great chance to leak test half my sump I guess... until this morning I hadn't done so lol. I'm hoping the other side performs as well!

I've decided to compromise and do some dead rock as well since I landed a large quantity of live rock which should help settle the dead stuff. I'll see if I can snap any pictures through the front window of my mystery rock guy's place when I go pillage his secret surplus.

My new pet arrived today! I want to thank Concept Aquatics for hooking me up with this big piece of sexy. It's the Deltec TC 2560. I'll review it once it's under a load... the new twin chamber design (hidden behind the bubbles) looks interesting.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/404/2560.jpg

I had to makeshift a valved end to cap the feed and toss a riser on the output so it didn't leak all over the place. I still made a nice mess before she was water-tight lol.

This is just a vinegar cleaning but the bubbles are tiny as FRAG. Can't wait to plumb this into my rock. My sump is going to be a self-contained (and over-skimmed) system for the next month or so.

Here's all the rock I ended up sourcing (about 250lbs no room for even one more piece in here).

Thanks guys =)

I love that it looks like a doctors office back there.... And that skimmer..... wow.... Ive been following closely :)

I think it's more hospitalish if that's a word. Put all the vinyl baseboards in tonight to complete that look lol.

First a shot of the canopy with the new doors on. These were painful to do since I had to scribe the profile of my hinges into both the canopy and the doors to achieve a flush-mount door and avoid seeing a hinge on the face of my doors. I then used wood-filler over the door side of the hinges and painted them up. My drop ceiling will cover the upper part of the hinges.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/404/doors1.jpg

Had to mount 2x4s to the door panels to straighten them out. The added weight causes the doors to hang slightly ajar which will actually be nice so they don't magnet shut until I want them to.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/404/doors2.jpg

Here are the push/release magnets that will allow the doors to shut flush:

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/404/doors3.jpg

I measured the door cuts carefully to maintain the scribe-spacing. I will be installing an inner trim to the canopy frame behind the doors to block light from escaping.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/404/doors4.jpg

My blue mixing drum is currently upstairs next to my fridge to hold all my ro/di water for the current tank. The room on the opposite side of my basement is so full of junk I can't even walk more than 2 feet into it. I can access the two other stacked water drums on the other side of my laundry tub from that room and plumbing all that into the fish room has to wait until I clean and reno that side.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/404/doors5.jpg

My dry goods shelf and the dosing shelf. My profilux doser will sit on top. Space is tight in the room and I need some flat working space near my sink so I'll be installing a sheet of plywood that can flip up when not in use soon.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/404/doors6.jpg

Plumbing is nearly done. I need to grab some 3/4" pipe to install the 3 gate valves that will run my media reactors. There's also a line that feeds into where the rock is (my reservoir I'll empty for water changes) and a valved line off the drain that will feed my skimmer. You'll notice metal gear clamps on the rubber sleeve I used to mount to the silly adapter that come with all the laguna pumps. These won't be submerged as the water on that side of my sump will be quite shallow. If anyone knows where I can get plastic clamps though please let me know!

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/404/doors7.jpg

Looking down the back corridor again:

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/404/doors8.jpg

Very simple returns! I have some sch 80 elbows to add on but I have no idea where my water level will be so those will go on once the tank is filled. They'll probably not be glued so I can aim or modify them if needed down the road.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/404/doors9.jpg

Okay I could be off the 404 bandwagon. This last group of pictures has brought to light a very serious issue that could bring into question the sanity of this whole build. How can a person feel at ease with all the designing and constuction of the tank and wonder if it will come to be knowing now, and don't try to hide it the proof is right there under your sink.... you drink PEPSI !!

lastlight
10-28-2011, 12:39 PM
People that know me well understand that diet pepsi and myself are two peas in a pod. Go back through my builds the evidence is compelling ;) my mini fridge will likely go where that case is. Half for pepsi and half for frozen food lol. Although... So far that cold floor is doing one hell of a job!

I was originally looking into the skimz 302. All sorts of issues getting it here as it had never been imported by aquadigital and there were signs that maybe that particular model was not confidence-worthy in the end.

So I wanted a vertex alpha cone 300. No hard set date for those as they weren't even being produced at the factory when I inquired and after waiting a while I decided I'd had enough of that.

I had the option of getting a sm250 sooner but again no real idea there either of when. I also mentally didnt want to drop that coin for a skimmer I've already owned and lost my shirt on.

after doing some reading I liked what I saw in the new deltec line. Even more efficient than the red dragons and from what I read the bubbles and output were the same as the bk line.

Now I've got it and it's game on

ok I just read this for the first time. nice build, not enough room behind the tank for my fat a$$ but nice all the same

are you planning on building a platform behing there? that would allow you to run plumbing along the floor if you had to while protecting it with the walkway above. this would eliminate the need for a ladder to work on it.

Any idea on how you will prop the doors open while working on the tank?

Thanks man! I bought some eye-hooks that will mount to the bottom of the 2x4s that straighten the doors out. I have a hook latch thingy that pairs up with each that will screw into the bottom of the joists. Just flip the door up at 90 degrees and latch in place. These latches will stick thru the drop ceiling later too.

Thanks man. It's a tiny house but now that I have all my stuff in place I'm really happy with how I used the space. I have no doubt that the ease of access is going to result in better husbandry. I hope that reflects in my coral but who knows...

Thanks Steve. I actually describe a moveable platform near the beginning of the build. I haven't decided what that will look like yet but the ladder is temporary to allow me access into the tank for now (and because I had no room to store it anywhere else at times during the reno!). I can't wait to get it out of there! I have no need for additional plumbing. The walkway will give me access to the tank from behind and making the platform moveable will allow me access to underneath the stand. That's all storage for my salt and other larger dry goods. I'll be buying some larger buckets of chemicals too... TONS of storage under there.

Doug there is complete access from the back of course and then there are 2 doors in the front and one door on the end opposite the sump. I don't really think of the sump side as having access but I can sorta lean diagonally from front or back I guess and get to it...

The grip is frighteningly loose... without the kickback from the pump I doubt it'd stay put! I'm going to anchor the cords much like the vortechs just in case I have some slippage.

I dumped all the rock in one spot because I have junk in the way everywhere else and my step-stool is too wide to unfold behind the tank :twised: I'll have to find a narrower one or build that sliding bench thing I had planned on. My bet at this point is a narrower stool I'm getting lazy!

Just wanted to lay it out and get lots of flow on it. This weekend's not looking good but I hope to do the scape the following weekend.

As for salt I think I used around 2.75 buckets. My kids were doing salt shots too I sorta lost track near the end!

Delphinus

I only ever climbed in to clean mine of the all the construction dust. For aquascaping though I did don a mask and snorkel at times. I staged most of my rock on the floor first, and that had its pluses and minuses. (As you probably remember, so I guess I don't have to tell that story over again...)

I've got my super long black zip-ties ready to go and I'm sure I'll use some epoxy here and there too. Nothing fancy I'm keeping it simple piles I think. Sloping piles rather than towers so the corals mounted lower down are not shaded when the top ones grow (as badly)!

Nobody wants or gets to see that lol. I think I'm going to lay a sheet of plywood across the tank to scape my piles on. I'll stand in there and work at my temporary bench.

Scaping looks sweet, & it's good to see it with light above it. Even though it's just one, it gives reason to believe when the tank is all properly lit up that having a white tank room won't be so bad. I'm kinda considering repainting the inside of mine blue, because I worry about the aesthetics of a white backdrop.

I'll still be adding some standalone rocks to build things outward a bit on the sand in a few spots. I have to wait to incorporate all the rocks covered in coral first. I may refrag some stuff too I won't have a clue I don't think until I'm doing it. Nervous!

Just a note that the first shot had only the phoenix on. The rest of the shots had the fishroom lit. You can see in the first pic you get almost the same effect as a black bg (which always seems to give me more of a dark grey look when a tank is lit. With the wall being far enough back it actually has that dark greyish look to it but that might change when all the lights are on (with decent reflectors I might add). The backdrop might appear as a slightly lighter gray? My lights are also going to be closer to the front of the tank to help keep the back looking darker.

I was considering some magnet mounts for some sheets of black corrugated plastic for removal. I want to be able to magfloat the back of this tank with ease. I might even leave it totally open. It seems a lot of things with this build are solve as you get there

So is my luck!

Before I added salt (and knowing reef crystals is low for Mg) I just grabbed my container of MG and dumped it all in! Was maybe 3/4 of a gallon? I knew I'd need at least that much. Anyways did my tests tonight:

Ca - 450 (Can't help it RC is high for Ca)
Alk - 9
Mg - 1400 (on the nose!)

So I thought why not toss a frag in. It's showtime!

Here's an iphone video with almost all the livestock transferred. I say almost because I spent some crazy hours detailing every rock to leave my old tank and picked off valonia, screwered the crap outta aiptasia and snapped, chopped and scraped the sps I didn't want in the new tank (mostly m. confusa and a small army of green digi). There is currently not a single bit of valonia in here I'm enjoying how that looks for at least a day I hope lol.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7sjpgNtVEc

I tried out youtube's stabilization filter but it's made things even more choppy and spastic sorry about that!

If you watch the whole thing you'll see I've abandoned drawer slides finally in favour of a pvc light rack. It allows me to slide each light individually front-to-back and side-to-side. Lovin' it!

Still to do:

- cleanup wiring
- install dusk/dawn t5s, auto top off, doser, and new gfo/carbon reactors
- sort out access and use of the 3 water barrels

I know! I have zero clue how it all did fit in the old one lol. The tank is indeed full... the important thing though is that everything has room to grow! I have lots of LPS/zoa space but don't see many new sps frags in my future. I nearly mounted my hollywood stunner onto the wall again but chose to dedicate a very large area at the end to it. The same zip ties are holding those massive 30lb boulders together for my largest tower so here's hoping they're built to last haha. Yeah I had been running a very fine sock up until today. I had to rinse it several times a day it was so fine. I'm now using a more forgiving sock so the water isn't splashing down from the sock tray when I wake up. I was vacuuming my sump into the fine sock and will continue to do this with that sock in hand as part of my maintenance. Even though there's plenty of flow through the sump it's a fairly wide tank and stuff settles out in there which makes sucking it out easy as hell.

Your build is coming along great man as expected. Can't wait to see your SPS start filling out now that you have all the livestock transferred over. I also love how clean and organized the fishroom looks.

That PVC light rail is a slick idea, despite being plagiarized apparently. Do you have the electrical cords plumbed through the PVC as I wasn't able to spot them in your video?

Thanks =) Lol I thought my video would show what a disaster the fishroom is currently. I got the doser hooked up yesterday and need to address that rat's nest of suspended wiring now. The wires for the lights rest on top of the back eurobrace and I'm going to anchor them to the 1.5" pvc return that's also resting on it. All the powerhead cords are there too. I might saw another piece of 1.5" in halg lengthwise to form a nice canal for the cords to sit in.

I'm excited to see what sme of these frags can do now. Most were not getting the light they needed and some are already showing a bit more colour.

Everyone! And by that I mean fish, corals, aiptasia and algae =)

I've got better access to deal with the latter. Have been trying to epoxy-attack my free nems as I find them and wiggle loose new valonia and net it.

My only loss has been the elegance which was already going sideways in the 97. Had to yank it before it totally melted.

Here's a video showing my tailspot happy in one of his many perches. I dedicate this one to Greg =)

Honestly all I had kicking around was the pair of 24w T5 from my other tank =)

1 x kz superblue
1 x kz new gen

I mounted it to my pvc rack really high up and above the halides in the back of the tank so as to not interfere with the sliding of the lights. The cords didn't reach to connect to where the timers were and have the lights in the front like normal  After I fired it up I liked it tho so it can stay lol.

I have been following your build since November, and have read your whole thread. WOW.
Great job with your basement. Love what you did with, well, everything. I couldn't post comments about your progress 'cause I wasn't there. I saw your jack-posts go up for sale so I knew you had torn down your tank upstairs. Hope the missus is happy and you are ready, or almost ready, for :x-mas:

Your build is STELLAR.
I hope you keep it for a long time.
I am coming from FW and have been researching SW for many months...too bad for most of us that we can't build something as beautiful as yours.

BTW, I love your recent pics
I especially love the lighting of shots 4 and 15

Yeah I'm going to have to remove some frags I'm sure. Things are more spaced than the 97 but I really like large colonies...

I'm not doing too well with removal btw. I removed 3 corals from this rock. Totally scoured, scraped and cut as best I could. All 3 are well on their way back! Whatever happened to SPS being touchy?

My saltynuts acro is now almost a mini colony again. It was only a few months ago that I sold the giant colony snapping it clean from the rock, However the little bits of encrustation has sprouted a ton of growth tips. Wait until you have to remove giant colonies out of necessity. Looks great Brett. I think that was my favourite stage of my tank - when everything was just growing out from frags/mini colonies. Everything changes so fast at that stage. I hate the pruning/coral fighting stage - it never ends, unless you have a major crash I guess.
