I've had this guy a little over 3 months. He was just a baby when I got him and a total recluse. I did not see him at all during the first month. Checked the tank with a red flashlight day night morning whatever. He was never around.

I tore the tank down thinking he was dead and he crawled out of the rock. Back into the tank he went.

Over the next couple of months I started to see him a bit more. Usually if I starve him for 3-4 days he will be out in the morning exploring, or sometimes late at night. I feed him a combination of live fiddler crabs as well as grocery store shrimp on a stick. He readily accepts the food on a stick it's just a matter of getting him to actually pull it off. Once he wants it a tug of war ensues.

Here's a video I got earlier. It's grainy but the tank lights are off.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wll7oXDryXo

This morning he was out and I managed to get lots of good photographs. Then much to my surprise I went back downstairs and he was out again with the lights on! first time ever!! I attribute this to the fact my timer stalled yesterday and when I restarted it I set it to go on earlier by accident.

First the night set :

The first few were taken at iso 1600 and relatively slow shutter speeds. I still increased the brightness and lowered the contrast to get a bit more light. The rest are with flash. Flash doesn't bother him much which is strange since he's so afraid of the tank lights being on.

Arms fully stretched he's about 20"

I like that one a lot even though it's dark. The room's tracklighting makes it appear the sun is rising.

I think in time he will come out more. I am hoping he's only around 5-6 months old, but I guess he could be closer to a year.

I believe his natural lifespan is about 18 months. Cephs just don't live very long..

Here is another video I shot today. I just have a cheapo camcorder that doesn't do well in low light.

It's cool to watch him just slide under the live rock, despite the fact he is noticeably full of fidder crabs :)

There is no such thing as a pygmy vulgaris and all pygmy octopi are nocturnal.

There's one at Pisces in Calgary. Not sure what kind but it's in one of their display tanks and they won't sell you anything out of there. Even if they would, buying livestock from them would take some thinking about.

All of the pictures were taken through the front pane which I always try and do since its starphire (not sure if it really makes a difference for photos but there's usually less water to shoot through vs a side shot), however I would keep checking him out from the side. Every time I would he'd turn either his head or eyes to maintain eye contact or at least so he could see where I was.

For some of the members who have said they want one, cephlopods require special tanks otherwise you will find them on your floor. Please do your research before you make an impulse buy. They are also short-lived in captivity for the most part.

No different then a fairy wrasse. I think people should care as much if their $250 wrasse jumped, vs their octopus escaping.

They need their own tanks, but you can keep corals with them if you want, just not fish or most other inverts. The tank needs a lid, and the aquascape should at least somewhat have them in mind, but it's not like you need specialized equipment for them. Just separate.

Anyway, he continues his transition into adulthood, which is great because he is always out now every morning and sometimes at night. Also sometimes during daylight (tank light) hours which is becoming more and more common place.

I never thought I'd end up "playing" with him, but he certainly is receptive to it although I'm not 100% convinced he would not bite the hand that feeds him. I have not let him completely envelop my hand. I only let a couple of arms grab me and when he tries to pull me in I stop him. I have pet his head and he didn't seem to mind, but again still worried about being bitten. I have at least made him more comfortable which means lots more photos.

Specialized tanks is what I said, they have to have a top like you said and there is a lot more care in setting up the system to prevent escape. I don't recall saying anything about special equipment. I say cudo's to you for your success in raising the little fella, my concern is for impulse buyers picking up one and not knowing how to properly take care of it.

I guess I just wouldn't use the term "specialized" While he is in a custom tank there is nothing "special" about it. He could be kept with corals, I just don't bother since I have a reef a few feet away. I used to keep some softies in the tank but not anymore.

Fed a couple more fiddlers today. I've had them for months and months so I should burn through them before they die. The filter on their tank died and I don't plan on replacing it, however the small amount of water is still clear and does not smell. There's probably another aquaclear in my basement somewhere I should check...

I tried to get an accurate measurement of his mantle but the silly guy is afraid of the tape. The camera flash doesn't bother him but measuring tape even on the outside of the glass does...

I'd estimate his mantle is about 2.5" I know arm to arm he can reach about 27" maybe more if he's fully stretched out.

So the last couple of days have been pretty interesting. Yesterday it looked like it was snowing in the tank. I looked a little closer and there are tiny suction cups everywhere. He shed his skin.

This morning, he was going absolutely crazy. I watched him for a good hour, he went everywhere in the tank, going in an out of holes, almost like he was showing me what he can still fit through even though he's so much bigger now. He also reached the bottom of the tank right to the top. (24" high but I already knew his arms were that long). He did many different colour changes and puffed up to make himself look even bigger. I took several photos but really wanted to get some video. Unfortunately all I have is a crappy pocket hd camcorder that does TERRIBLE in low light. I took a couple of videos then used a little 10k dymax led light with the camera and got a few decent shots. I thought about turning on the tank lights early but did not want to screw with the timer.

After watching for a bit longer I gave him a piece of shrimp. Now this was really unexpected. He swam up to my arm and grabbed it with all 8 of his. Usually he holds on with 2-3 arms and uses the rest to brace himself against the rock so I can't pull him towards me. This time he was going all out. I could not hold my ground, well I probably could but was not going to injure him. So in I went and I thought for sure I was going to get bit but once I let go of the shrimp in my hand he eventually let me go.

I really really wish I could have video taped that but unlike my octopus I only have 2 arms so it could not be done.

Not sure how to post youtube links into the thread but here are the videos

Another quick hand feeding video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKKO1Bm5V1c

I'm was very surprised he came right out for the food right away. I was in a rush to feed him before work and he came out quick and grabbed it and then retreated to consume it.

I'm less afraid of being bitten these days.

corpusse
03-05-2011, 03:30 PM
I'm 99.99% sure he will not bite. The fact there has not been a recorded bite with this relatively common species, the fact he didn't bite my hand when it smelled like shrimp and he crawled over it to get to the shrimp and now this :

Originally I was planning on feeding him tonight since he now does come out during the day with coaxing but I was vacuuming and he came out to see what all the commotion was so I got out the camera and took some videos. I also noticed I still have a ton of crabs in my fiddler tank, which I rarely if ever feed.

First I got this video of him swimming around.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gixiowERJOA&hd=1

Then I decided to see what would happen if I put my hand in without food. After a few seconds he came over to explore pulled me a bit let me touch him as well and did not show any signs of aggression. I was pretty sure he was hungry as it had been a day and a half since he ate.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WOH-WXSlRA&hd=1

After the video I went and grabbed one of my crabs, put him in a jar and put him in. I didn't think it would go by this fast but the 42 second video came out great!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBrxhKTg9XY&hd=1

I will lookout for a jar with a lid this weekend. I'll also try to wait until sunday night to feed him again, Since the crab was a lot smaller then his usual meal of large shrimp he may even come out tonight for a feeding.

I've tried a few times to get better videos of him opening the container. Problem is when I'm properly setup he can't do it. His success rate is about 60-70% but as time goes on he seems to have problems. This is because he discovered his arms fit through the holes he can grab the crab rip off its legs but can't pull it out. Think of trying to pull a pop out of machine without paying.

I did get this successful attempt but the quality is not the greatest. It does show him doing it in about a minute
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWjh2yCZ6n8

I did move the light right under him but of course he couldn't get it open. I tried to offer to help but he didn't want my help. Still haven't been bitten but when he's not starving he will chose play of lunch.

I took a bunch of non flash photos which came out great. I'll post those shortly.

I continue to test him. In this video he's obviously not very hungry but still curious.

Wow. I want one.

How much is an animal like that?

Asides from tight fitting tops, etc... how have you found the care level?

Very interested to know.

Care is very easy. Only real issue is you probably have to start with live food and endure several weeks or months of no sightings. This is the main reason for the live food, it's not that he won't eat dead it's you won't see them until they are comfortable.

I haven't posted in a while, mostly due to being busy and or sick.

Only thing new is he lost the tip of one of his arms to a powerhead. No big deal. It's regenerating.

I have still been taking tons of photos and videos, now I"ll try and get around to sorting through them and posting some good ones. It's now been almost 7 months since I got him.

One cool thing that has happened is he finally let me pick him up completely (still in the water) Usually he will keep a couple arms on the glass or rock so he can not be pulled too far but he crawled right on to my hand the other day.
