I have a 4' TEK Light and want to know what I should do to add moonlights.

I have seen those cheap Marina ones at pet stores and don't know if thats good enough, or if there is an affordable way to do it differently.

If someone has a DIY design that they have actually used or seen in operation, I am open to this as well.

Thanks,

Patrick

I have been planning on making a bunch of 3W blue LED spotlights to highlight some of my super glowy colonies at night. I'm going to join Milad's next LED group buy and pick up some of those RB Crees and make some nice housings. I'm planning on making them mount on the edge of the tank with a small lamp. Maybe talk to Grizz; I know he's a welder but he might be able to machine some nice housings for the LEDs and optics?

I have a couple of set of DIY moon light that I have been thinking of selling. They are brand new, never used. If interested I will dig them out and send you a pic of them and explain how to install in to your fixture.

you dont need 3 watt crees for moonlights-led wheat bulbs will do with a 4 watt transformer run in a series-you want it dim-not bright-you have to simulate night time.i picked up a diy kit off ebay for $10-includes everything for 12 bulbs.but now i have the vertex they are just sitting in a drawer-maybe for my breeding tanks

This is what I use for my moonlights.

They are an ok price, but cheap make. They don't last, not all of them anyways.

I just let them rest in the holes of the eggcrate i have covering the top of my tank.

Here is my tank with them on.

These are the ones I have,

I think I have a set of 4, 6, 8 & 10. There is no light streak and the blue hue is completely even.

Grizz.. If you get a neptune you can get the Lunar Simulator!! thats my plan soon here!

Its sweet, because you can fade them out after all your other lights have turned offf!
i would have them fade out over 3 hours, and make my own night's lol

I am getting a sweet deal on a GHL Proflux 2ex plus I am not using these LED's anymore because the fixture's I have and the new one's I am looking at have them built in. But if I can do this with the Proflux and the built in LED's that would be sweet.

Best thing for a moon light I have ever found is an 8” (15-watt) black light. I saw this in action at a late night visit to a fellow reefers place and was very impressed.

Honestly, I find the LEDs provide too much of a spotlight effect, whereas the black light appears much more diffuse and natural over the tank.

I promptly went out and bought the above noted light at an automotive supply store (pricess auto) for about $9

Patrick did you see my moon light when you were over? I went with the ice cap led strips, there bright enough to be supplemental lighting on most peoples tanks. Cost a little more but there really nice. Pm me if you wanna see them.
