*** BOUGHT/DONE - Thanks everyone *** Currently downgrading from 150g to 75 g with sump. In doing some research I think I would be best off with a new sand bed instead of reusing the old. Looking for enough sand to cover the bottom with approx 3/4 to 1 inch. Any one have some new sand kicking around? Let me know prices and how much you have.

If you have old sand, just wash it in tank water to get the crud out and re-use it...anything you buy here will be exactly that.

+1 have to agree I have done this a couple time from tank to tank but I rinsed mine out with tap water ( I have a whole house RO)

I was just reading about how phostphates bond to calcium carbonate in the sand and you should replace every 2-3 years(A post in RC i can't seem to find again). I don't know about this one though, since well the sand in a real reef i'm sure is a "little" more than 2 years old. Worth looking into though. FWIW I reused my sand with no issues.

I've had my sand bed going for 11 years. Grows featherdusters, halimeda and conchs like crazy.

Anyone need some mini conchs??? LOL

Blue World has good prices on sand. $30 for 20 pounds I believe. CaribSea brand.

I guess i has been a couple years since I have bought sand. I was thinking it was going to be a lot more than $30. Thanks all for your info. Will buy new and maybe supplement with some of my old stuff.

I used about 25-30 pounds from my nano tanks to start my 70 and added 45 more pounds new. Worked out good. I washed the sand as another had said... and let the tank cycle WELL. Dont toss your sand. It is definitely usable. Garden hose, colander and pail. And a couple hours of patience and wash and rewash.

Just wash it in the same tank water and re-use it. you may want to wash it 2 or 3 times - no need to pay for more...

Just use ordinary house screen and water and you will remove all larger chunks, works great! I put the larger chunks in frag tank!

Thanks all for the help. I did the swap tonight and we will see how it worked. I cleaned my existing sand and reused it. (Crossing my fingers).

Just remember to let it cycle as you will definitely have die a spike of some sort.
