I think I am going crazy!!

I am a newbie on this forum but I need help from you guys.
I need suggestions for my boyfriend fast approaching birthday. He is a fish and coral fanatics and he is an active member of this forum.
I don't have much knowledge about this whole fish thing but we do have a 140 gallon reef tank at home. I know he would appreciate some sort of gadgets or something relates to this reef hobby.

Can someone please give me some ideas of what to buy for his birthday?
As far as budget goes.... well, let's say I am willing to spend, but let's keep it under 1k.

so what do you guys think?
Please and thank you

right now we are not using it as it takes too much space and time and money to keep it running, I actually banned him to set the 300 gallon up.

If you know his favorite SW shop get him a nice BIG gift certificate and let him pick out what he would like, it might be the best way to go.

I may have to do that, but i kinda wanna surprise him with something creative too.
Is there something that you guys always want but feel too expensive to buy it for yourself?

Okay, here's what you do for the reefer who has everything.. Go out and buy yourself a mermaid costume. Preferably with a coconut bra (bonus points for that). Fill up that 300g that's just sitting around with nice warm water. When you see him come home from work jump in the tank and wave your tail around. What you two do after that is up to you, but this forum loves pictures and videos. Just saying.

I'm waiting for the boyfriend to make a second account and see the newbie first post on here with a new Luxim Seashine lighting system or something. haha

But seriously, everyone has long term plans for the tank, hinting at finding out his next step might be the best bet. Failing that, i think the mermaid idea is by far the best suggestion yet.

here is my take this they have a 140g and a 300g not yet set up due to lack of space and money. which i can understand not cheap to get started. if you reallly want to surprise him this is my thought.sit back do a take on your living space and contemplate what space you can spare for him to set up his 300g tank.

once you have foundthis space (since your willing tospend under 1k...) get him a visa gift certificate for however much you wish. stick the gift certificate in or under furnature box you get the idea and tie a string to it. thread the sting around the house to the entry point when he comes inthe door. with a note follow me.

a: youo will surprise the hellout of him.. and give him a littll estart up money to slowly set up his 300g.. and maybe he may shut down the 140 to gain back space for you.

just my thought

wish my misses was gettin me something reef related lol but she aint reefsafe so im not allowed to have anything to do with tanks for my gift......unless one of the lfs does a gift exchange program:):) awesome that your doing this for him:)

im going to go with some of the others and say a gift card is the best thing you can give him in this hobby and its all about the presentation:):)

The Grizz
12-08-2010, 04:53 AM
OK HERE IT IS: get the mermaid costume and the coconut bra IS A MUST, buy him a gift card, leave a path of something leading to the bathroom where you are waiting for him in a nice hot bath (bubbles optional) when he walks in to the room tell him is gift is hidden somewhere in the tub. Where you hide the gift card is up to you.:lol:

Get him a new hobby, I love fish stuff too but there are plenty of other things that would surprise me more at Christmas. Like a puppy  or more seriously a Traxxas Summit RC 4WD Electric Monster Truck (http://www.nitrorcx.com/summitrc4wdrtrelectricmonstertruck.html). I can't imagine anyone not having a tonne of fun that thing.

At the end of the day the guy sounds like he's got the aquarium stuff under control, he can obviously get whatever he wants without any issues. The best kind of gift is something he wants but has been told he can't have. If there's something you've put your foot down on in the past the best gift you can possibly give is a lighter foot. Trust me guys are just like girls, they want what they can't have.

OOOPs, there you go guys, you just got him in trouble. He has been nabbed!

Personally as there is so much stuff out there, and many things can be a personal preference, I would suggest a gift certificate to your LFS (local fish store). He probably would appreciate that the most!

On a funny note, since you didn't know about the cost of the MP40's, give him a picture of them wrapped up, and say surprise. These were your gift.

I'm still confused how this guy is active on this board and won't know this is about him. How many other people will have a 140gal reef setup with two MP40s and a 300 gallon tank lying around that they aren't allowed to setup? I'm pretty sure that's not too typical.

Time for a woman-to-woman talk sweet Cookie!

It took me a while to reply because I've been ROFLMAO so badly I was in tears LOL!

The guys are right! Gotta love them all; they're so freaking hilarious!

He wants what he can't have,
The Coconut Bra is killer smart/he'll follow you like a pup,
and you giving him the reins back for a little bit is HUGE good for both of you!

I'm +1 on the 300gal permit... presented with caveat like "it's clear we don't have room to have both so "I thought" it would be wonderful to have a killer show tank..." blah blah blah... This caveat sucks but you'll need to figure out how to cleverly handle that....

And present the Gift Certificate any way you like... mmmmm baby...

But seriously now; the real joy will come from you taking the time to look into how involved this "hobby" is... It's science and love of nature and nurturing all tied up in a great package. You may find the reasons you love this guy have a lot to do with why he loves that tank >:-)

You have a chance to make this the most wonderful Christmas he'll remember forever...

Just a few thoughts from an aged (ok, I'll admit that) cougar.... the ball's in your court honey bun and you can have sooooh much fun!

Merry Christmas!

Good luck crawling into a tank with your feet bound and coconuts over your breasts .

The perv-o-meter just went off again Brett (Where ever your lurking), time to tune down the sensitivity. I think Doug broke it with all of his :wink:ies haha.

Best choice would be gift certificates or coral you know he will like. I wouldn't purchase colonies but look for rarer frags (SPS- Red Planet, Sunset Monti, Strawberry Shortcake. LPS- Rare chalices/ braching cyphastrea. Softies- Candle Apple Reds, Hornets, other rarities).

Why not ask him personally, the best gifts are the ones you really want after all.

yes yes, listen to Levi, he speaks from personal experience. so remember to put the coconuts and fins on AFTER you have entered the tank.

P.S. Don't forget the pictures. (bonus points for videos).

The 300g is out of the question, I would have considered it if it is not so high maintenance, but honestly just hydro bill is gonna double up every single month, and at the moment is already hitting $150!
Besides, if he spends all his downtime scrubbing his new 300g, he wouldn't have time for me.

He will get exactly that!
today is his lucky day, I actually felt more generous than usual :twised:
As far as presentation goes, I would have to say no to coconut and mermaid, I really don't think he would be that impressed to see me in those
But I have worked out another unique way to present it, and yes, will post pics after his birthday, but nothing x-rated

Give him your support, which you already do. Go out with him when he shops for aquarium stuff. I can't tell you how many guys love it when their significant other helps, just don't point at a fish and say "I want it". This way you both win, I have seen a few relationships break up because of tanks.

A BWA gift certificate would be the perfect gift. :twised: Kidding.

On boxing day all our gift cards will be $20 more than your purchase price.
