ALL PRICES ARE IN USD (current CDN to USD is .98)
Group buy is closed. For additional group buys check out www.LEDGroupBuy.com

Ok people, I got a really good deal on LEDs from CREE and im offering them up to you before I order. I will close down the group buy on Dec 10th and you have 48hours to send me the money via paypal (+3% if you use credit card i believe). Or you can give me cash if you live in vancouver area, im near JL alot.

This is a wicked deal on these LEDs considering most other places they are going to be 50% more.

The order will be paid by me after i get everyone's money and will be shipped to me. Once I have them, i will ship them out within a couple days to everyone that made the order.

For people outside GVRD area:

You guys needs to decide on one person who I can ship to and you can all be there to pick them up so its cheaper for everyone. For instance, joe bob and fred from calgary all want LEDs. They split the $20 shipping cost and I send them all to Joe. Bob and Fred meet up with Joe and pickup their LEDs.

Ontop of the below prices, there is a shipping charge to me so once we get closer to the end of the group buy, ill let you guys know how much its going to be to ship to me and ill tack it on to everyones order by % of LEDs per person.

If we get enough people in vancouver, we can have a build party if someone is willing to host it.

Questions
1. Do you know if the price for the optics includes the plastic lens holders or is that the lens only?Holders and lens
2. Are you able to get a price from ETG on Neutral whites and regular blues as well? I plan on buying a mix to get the lighting the way I want it. No, we are trying to keep cost down so we are just doing the group buy on RB and CW. All the fixtures ive been reading about use RB and CW colors only. a 2:1 ratio of RB to CW will give you close to 15k color temp (a little bluer).

3. Did they share with you the bin numbers on those? I cant specify bin numbers but I can specify kit number which includes certain bins. But this will be for everyone. any suggestions for kit numbers? Im going to research this so we can get the best.
4. How much for MCE4WT-A2-0000-000M01 mounted on a star and lens? $12ea in small quantities but there is no lens
5. Does the price include tax?Yes and No. The vendor is not going to charge us tax but the border will, expect the shipping charge to be a % of your total order
6. Are these mounted on stars? Yes
7. How will it be shipped? UPS
8. How much for neutral whites and blues? Blues $3.75 neutral whites $4.25

I cant really get good prices on other colors because I told them we are going to buy a ton and since i was buying a big amount already I told her we are going to be in the 100-300 range on all the LEDs so she gave me a good price on them.

My understanding from reading everything on reefcentral boards (and let me tell you there is alot to read), almost everyone is going RB and CW colors. im going 2:1 RB to CW and it should give me something a bit bluer than 15k.

Scuba im going to collect questions and just ask them every two days.

What about the ballest to run them?

Milad
12-02-2010, 01:04 AM
What about the ballest to run them?

ballest = drivers

drivers depend on how you build so cant really get a group buy on them since everyone might want something different. I cant point you to a good place to get a driver though. just gota know what you plan on doing.

Base Order Codes
Min Radiant @ 350 mA
XPEROY-L1-0000-00901 group 14 350 Flux (mW)
XPEROY-L1-0000-00A01 group 15 425 Flux (mW)
XPEROY-L1-0000-00B01 group 16 500 flux (mW)
the 3rd is the best one i would like 60 pcs.
what is the brand and type of the optics, looking to get 60pcs.

for my array i love the deep blue. so i will run the blue separate than the whites,at different times of the day.
i would go with
MCE4WT-A2-0000-000M01 for the white this specific one is multi-chip LED that provides high lumen output in a small footprint 430 LMS at 350 mA
i would probably get only 5 pcs these are $er

i am using the dimmable buckpuck i am sure there are few others down in the market. they are maybe 2 square" and they fit snug in my array.
i still need to do more reaserch on the
MCE4WT-A2-0000-000M01for their driver.
but i am thinking of one led instead of few.
i got those buckpucks in calgary a little over a year ago.

I put you down for 25 which is $75usd plus some extra shipping charges

btw these leds can be compared at $7.95 on the CW to places like reefledlights.com... thats a $3+ savings per LED! which adds up quick.

yes and yes but you can just plug these in
you need to build a led fixture

The fixture im building is similar to 3x 250-400 MH fixture

Would I be able to incorperate night
Lights as well?
How many bulbs should I use for a standard 90gallon, and what colour to use?
What would the cost be about?
What else would I need to buy?
Anyways I'm interested but know nothing about them.

you could do a moonlight several different ways, I still havent decided how I would do mine.

A standard 90 wanting to keep SPS could build two of the modules im building.
http://www.canreef.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=70413
of course you need different drivers for two modules.

to build an LED light you would need:
LEDs
Heatsink
Drivers
thermal paste
solder + soldering iron
screws
wire

If you follow along on my thread, ill be detailing it step by step. You can also search LED DIY builds and they will explain how to do it too.
There is also videos on youtube.

cost for a two 48LED modules would probably be under 1k

looks like there is no tax at the vendor end but when it hits the border there will be tax. So expect a % ontop of the total LED cost to cover the border cash grab. Im not sure how to charge this one, anyone got some ideas?

looks like 8%? but im guessing this was written before the HST?

Try and make sure they send the package via USPS, not UPS. If they send it UPS, there will be a nasty brokerage fee. Anyone else in the Okanagan interested in this buy? If I'm the only one it's probably not worth Milad's effort to ship here.

Correct. UPS Ground usually minimum $40 brokerage. I think brokerage is included in UPS Express. Or ship it to blaine or point roberts and bring it across. For sure with that amount you'll have to go in and pay HST on it at the border.

in case thy dont ship with usps but whit ups, fed ex ore so, I have a borker that charges only a flat fee, if you buy for $20 ore for $ 2,000 it dous not matter,

out of my head it is $ 22 ore $ 25 CND for the broking service, so that would not be to bad on anorder that is aparently running into the numbers, where ups and all of the others rip you off.

I will place my order in a few days, in case needed, we can use my broker to arange the import, I have to check the duty on the led's of my last order, i will do this tomorrow, and let you know.

pleas note, custom fee is not HST, so if there was a 8% duty, than it is the cost of the product + the cost of shipping = total cost pre duty, than ad the 8% duty, and than ad the 12% HST.

tax tax tax, we cant go around it, however the duty, is not that bad I find.

i will post what I paid on duty last time, I think it was less than 8%, I think it was 5 ore so. I wil check

good news and bad news!
good news:
They are giving us a good deal on blues and neutral whites which I posted on first page

Bad news:
They will be shipping UPS

So, that means im going to get dinged with a brokerage fee but split between all of us it shouldn't matter too much.

ok peeps, we need to vote on this delivery stuff
if i go UPS ground and go to Blaine to pickup the package, its going to be about 2% extra of the total charges and we wont get the LEDs until after Christmas Dec 26th.

If i go UPS world wide saver we will get it around the 16-17th and its about 4% extra of the total charges.

Jaws and I would be taking the biggest hit at about $40-50 on each of us if we go the fast route (which I dont mind since i dont have to drive to the US and im still saving a bunch on the LEDs). I can try chatting up the LED lady and see if I can get her to drop the price by 4% but i dont think it will happen.

Fast route cost:
Milad $39.96
Ferret $8.18
ScubaSteve $1.28
Monocus $3.30
Jaws $48.04
elias $16.52
nlreefguy $2.05
mseepman $30.66

Slow route cost:
Milad $19.98
Ferret $4.09
ScubaSteve $0.64
Monocus $1.65
Jaws $24.02
elias $8.26
nlreefguy $1.02

locking at 70 to 120, depends a bit, my wife kills me if I take it out of the acount after my buy from Rob, so I have to sell what i have laying around before I'm alowd to buy

a bulb is a bulb, and if it is a MH ore LED, the mony spend was for light, so if I can get rid of the MH, I can go LED.

I have one unit already build, and that turnd out better than I expected.

as I still run 2x 250 and 2x 150 biside the LED, I slowly want to move the MG and go LED

I have the heat sinks already (as I was planning to go LED,

only the driver part I still need, and your plan for going with 2 big once I like

in that case I take the driver from my 28 LED's I'm running now to only drive 28 blue once, for mornings and evenings.

ahh

sorry from the corals from Rob, the day he was TOTM I mailed him to tell me when he would take things down.

Hey Milad, I'm fortunately goin to have to cancel my part of the order. My work just told be that they aren't going to reimburse me for over $1k they owe me for three more weeks... Which times out really well with, you know, christmas shopping and having to book a flight out of Vancouver. I'm unfortunately going to have to save my moneys until they pull their s**t together and pay me back. Please let me know when you see this.

ok got bad news! sorry!
I just talked to the lady to make sure she is ok with our order since its almost 1000 leds and she said its fine. but then i asked her how long it takes for them to be ready and she said the size of the order to mount on stars takes a couple days! doh

so sorry for everyone that was hoping to get them before the 17th, ill try to get her to speed up the star mounting process. im going to push to get them to everyone before Christmas.

Order is out, LEDs are in the process of getting mounted to stars.

FYI anyone that missed the LED group buy ill be doing another group buy mainly because of all the interest I got and also I think im going to start LEDing all kinds of stuff up and my company got interested because we are redoing buildings with LEDs.

So i created a website www.ledgroupbuy.com

ill probably do another one early January that ends late January.

I dont want to be a downer but if they ship ordinary ground UPS you will most likely get a large brokerage\customs clearance fee. Basically the fee for doing the paper work on duty and/or taxes (taxes you will also pay).

here is the fee schedule

I hope Im wrong...but Im almost %100 on this one.....been stung a few times.

cool....Im going to be looking to build a fixture soon I think and your group buy prices are good.

Are people having good success with just using the 2 types of LED...I thought a lot of people were using 2 types of blue. Where can I find the spectrum on these?

Milad
12-14-2010, 05:27 AM
spectrums are on the spec sheet on the www.ledgroupbuy.com link

these two colors are proven to work, some people do add blue and neutral white but the norm is cool white plus royal blue to make the colors really pop

as far as UPS goes, yes ill get charged brokerage fee but im doing their fast delivery which they cover brokerage costs. LEDs are on the no duty/tax list from what ive read.

My order works out around $5.40 per led with 60 degree optics. That is a pretty damn good price if you ask me. Typically, they're in the $7 range with optics. The money I saved will go to my other parts.

so they are about to charge me and ship them out but we ordered so much that they ran out of materials to make them with!!!

they were able to make everything except for half of the royal blue and all the 40degree lens

im having them ship out all they have and then someone needs to step up and not get their royal blues until jan 3rd when they get shipped. im willing to wait on mine but i need couple other people to wait also.

so 40degree lens arent coming in till jan 3rd also. this shouldnt be a big deal since you can make your fixture and just add the lens later.

so let me know if you dont mind waiting on your royal blue and ill add you to the list.

heads up guys on the optics
I was playing around with them, they fit tight onto the LEDs but if you flip them over they will fall off with a little nudge

I talked to some people and sounds like they are not designed to "clip" on. you are suppose to fasten then with adhesive (NOT SUPER GLUE) like two part epoxy by dabbing a tiny tiny tiny bit on end of a tooth pick and placing it under the optic so it doesnt touch anything. or i heard you can use two sided tape. Do not use super glue because it can fog the lens.

Hey Milad and all,

I hope this whole operation worked out for everybody.

I've been using the TMC (uk brand and original Cree OEM) led fixtures for years and have been waiting for the DIY materials to come down a bit before building my own rig. Waiting for the Cree LED's in particular to come down. Well they haven't come down a whole lot (except RB for 3.19 is pretty darn good) but their technology keeps getting better an better so you have to pull the trigger at some point.

Anyway now seems like the time and I stumbled across your website ledgroupbuy.com. But I was a little skeptical because of the newness etc. At any rate I found you here and everything seems legit.

I hope you understand my aprehension.....we all know how easy it is to set up shop on the internet and take in money.

So I'm hoping to hear some feedback here on this thread from all the folks who took part in this group buy.

I wish you the best with ledgroupbuy.com (think its a great idea) and I hope to be doing an order with you soon.

AspenReef,

Thanks for checking in. Ya I did this group buy and then decided that I shouldn't limit the group buy to my Canadian friends so I setup that website (im a little in love with LEDs). I do make a bit of $$ from the website but its mainly to cover paypal and then give me a couple penny's on the dollar. I think its like 3 cents on each dollar i sell.

You should start seeing people comments on their orders because the first few went out couple days ago and they should be getting them in their mailboxes.

Hey I just noticed the XM-L series there on your site. Are they much better? And are they still compatible with the same drivers (I'm using meanwell 60-48-D's)? Could you mix and match the old XP-G with them on the same driver? Thanks.

Hey I just noticed the XM-L series there on your site. Are they much better? And are they still compatible with the same drivers (I'm using meanwell 60-48-D's)? Could you mix and match the old XP-G with them on the same driver? Thanks.

Well I blinded myself with a XP-G
the XM-L will burn my eyes, lol.

They are the new kid on the block. They XP-G can go up to 1.5A and the XM-L can do 3A

I believe the XM-L T6 is about 10-15% brighter at 1A than the XP-G

You can put them on the meanwell 60-48-D at full blast and they wont skip a beat, 1.3A is nothing for them. at 1.3A they only take up about 3.1v so you could get 15 in a series.

But if you are going to put them in the same series as the XP-G you want to turn down the amperage on the meanwell 60-48-D to about 1A so you dont over run the XP-G (that way they will last very long time)

But there is one problem, there are hardly any optics for them. So you have to hang it close to the surface on a shallow tank (14inches or so). Its because the T5 just came out the first of Jan and the T6 came out a week ago or so. You should see some optics in the next month or two. im hot on the optics trail.

They will be replacing the XP-G but without the optics, I would still probably buy XP-G.... unless I had a shallow tank.

nlreefguy
01-28-2011, 04:03 PM
Could you put me down for 4 of the xm-l on the next order? I don't plan on using optics anyway. I tried doing it on the website but it gave me the absurd shipping cost of over $30!

Milad
01-28-2011, 09:24 PM
nlreefguy, they actually ship out of USA now so its getting expensive.
I can ship it first class mail for you (option is back on website) but there is no tracking information which sucks.

If you want, the first class mail is back up on the site for today but im going to take it back down because I just feel weird about not having tracking information.

nlreefguy
01-29-2011, 10:11 AM
I just put in my order on your website.

But $30 shipping for 4 LED's? Kind of negates the savings you'd get from the group buy altogether. I just had a large heatsink shipped to me with some other things from another LED retailer and the shipping for ALL of it came to less than that, and that's a large heavy heat sink measuring 24" in length.

I'm not trying to be a a**hole but the shipping might start turning away some of your potential customers. Or maybe I'm totally out of my mind and the other guys just gave me the wrong shipping price or something....

ya shipping sucks. USPS has flat rate boxes that allow me to stuff as much as I can in the box not worrying about weight. So 4 LEDs is same as bricks.

SEE THE RESULTS I POSTED ON THE NEXT PAGE.

Has any of you guys that bought led threw this post tested them yet.
Reason for asking
i just tested the XPG and XPE with a puckpuck 24VDC 1Amps maximum drive.
Running the XPG cool white have no problem at all.
Running the XPE royal blue well they keep on burning, but if i test them at a 700Ma no problem.
To my understanding XPE could run at 1000Ma without burning.
yes the heatsink temp is at 25 degree.
yes i placed 6 led in a series for the buckpuks.
and yes i do have a test meter.

This reply is not intended for bad thread.i just need to know because i was planning to place an order for the drivers tomorrow(it does make a big difference if XPE royal blue will not run at 1000Ma.

thanks

mseepman
02-08-2011, 05:18 AM
Although the XPE's are "able" to run at 1000mA...I don't if anyone recommends it. I would try to stay around the 800mA range to prolong life and wear.

Milad
02-08-2011, 05:56 AM
how long are they staying on? it should run at 1000mA
Ive only tested mine with 2 AA batteries in series atm since im still playing with the design.

which power supply and buckpuck are you using?

eli@fijireefrock.com
02-08-2011, 05:58 AM
they are staying on for no more than 10 seconds.
i would like to run them at wat their max should be because i have no problem keeping the temperature near 27 degree.
power supply i used on an old led setup 24VDC 6.5 Amps
dimmable 24VDC 1000Ma buckpuck. cant recall the model but i used it on my old system running it at 1000Ma for phillips 3w led and no problem.

Milad
02-08-2011, 03:54 PM
Now everyone is going to be scared to run theirs at 1000mA to check it out! Well I don't think any other LED looks like the XP-E expect the XP-G and the XP-C. The XP-G only comes in white, the XP-C does come in royal blue but they would burn at 700mA. So I don't think they mixed up the LEDs (hopefully). How are you measuring your current?

Actually I'm still looking for a good driver for them. I'm looking for a driver that can power them to their full potential in a strip by themselves. I'm going to light my frag tank with them and supplement actinic with T5's (or possibly get some more royal blues, haven't made up my mind yet). So I'm looking for a good driver than can take advantage of the full 3A potential, run only the four of them in a strip and is dimmable. Any ideas?

Hmm, this is puzzling... Because I'm doing a mini build where I want to use one driver to drive

4 x XP-G (3.0v)
4 x XP-E (3.4v)

The driver will output a constant 700mA.

I found this quote from a site:
"If the LEDs require slightly different voltages only the lowest voltage LED will light and it may be destroyed by the larger current flowing through it."

So that's making me weary of wiring up different LEDs in series now... Should I put a resistor before the XP-E??

Or should I wire the 4 x XP-G in series, the 4 x XP-E in series, then wiring the two strings in parallel?

Milad?

Doing large series strings using those Thomas Research drivers is dangerous. Unless you are an electrician, I wouldn't even suggest it. Keep the strings small in series or do parallel with resistors and fuses.

Hmmm... I have XP-G's, XR-E's and XP-E's all mixed up in the one string powered by a Meanwell ELN-60-48D with no problems so far. (?!?)

If that's the case, you should be running it at 700mA so that you don't burn out the XR-E's...running them at 1000mA will kill them far more quickly than you want to.

yes, perhaps I'd better split them up.... or dial back the drivers - these things put out enough light that I wouldn't need to worry about running them at 1000mA anyway. Curiously, everything is going well....

Actually, just figured I'd go in and check that out to be sure and no, actually, I was not right. The only mix is XP-G and XP-E. The XR-E's are all on a separate driver.

Then you are set...I plan to run my XP-E's at 800-900 and my xp-g's at 1000 but you're right, they are so bright that they don't really need to be run that bright if it extends their life.

just stopped soldering only 30 XPE royal blue, here are some quick photos.

Very cool! On the bigger heatsink you really have those LED's pushed together...what will that be lighting? I would be a little afraid you're going to cook whatever is under that! My understanding is that usually people put LED's on 2" centers...you have them touching. Are you putting optics on those?

i am putting 40degree optics.
the whole setup will be 3 separate arrays with each containing 40 X3w led.running them over a 180glns tank.
the reason they are close is because i am running an ac 6" fan on each heatsink, keeping it as low as 26 degrees.
will be running it at 1050Ma for all leds.

the 3rd photo is just a test sample of only 6 led on a small heatsink with a puckpuk running intervals at 170Ma,400Ma and the last at 920Ma.

So with those optics I'm assuming that you are putting the fixture quite high above the tank. Otherwise I would suspect that you might have three big spotlights.

my tank is an inwall with a somewhat spaced back room to play. so yes it will be high not sure how high yet.

Looking forward to the build. I haven't started yet other than a test build.

I just noticed that you have a lot of LED's in that string...what driver are you using again?

i am using 2 drivers for each heatsink.
TRC-040S128DS for 10 XPG
and
TRC-120S105DT for running 30 XPE

Be really careful on that string of 30...at the levels you are playing with serious injury to yourself would be very very easy. When you first light it, don't touch the heatsink if anything is out of the ordinary (even a dim led or two).

thank you for the concern.
i have been and will continue to be carefull and take a step at a time.with lots of testing.
